After 3 plays this is what I think:

Fun 10/10
Theme vs reality 10/10
Player interaction 9/10
Last turn tension 9/10
Look 10/10
Originality 10/10
Replayability 10/10
Rules 10/10 intuitive
Sweetspot 5 players 10/10, 4 player 9/10, 3 player 8/10

This is an amazing game. It is economic war in a box. It plays smoothly. Those in your group that are walking calculators will love this game however they are not guarenteed a win because there is the slightest of unknown in the game which means they need to have more than a calculator. They must have intuition and business savvy. There are several layers to this game that make it a joy to replay and will not be visible on your first play. This game is worth owning even if you own Indonesia. IMHO Automobile is a much better economic game than Wealth of Nations or Containers, such that I won't even play those games again. My collection is about owning 10's and 9 not 8s and below.

This game is a gamers game however it is easily teachable to someone who has graduated from gateway games. In other words this would be an excellent economic game for the intermediate gamer.

Time it takes to play is excellent for the what the game gives back in fun, tension and experience. Martin Wallace has proven himself again to be an excellent designer with this game.

I love this game, it is worth the investment and I recommend it to gamers, Wallace Fans and players that are finished with gateway games.

In short, Automobile is a big game with many little mechanics that work together. It's an exercise in manipulation of turn order and precedence to try and work production and sales together but apart from financial opportunity cost in paying to build unsalable cars the stream of loss cubes from bad decisions doesn't seem so bad. With all the mechanics and special actions and turn order mechanics combined it's a little difficult to get a complete picture of where things are, but there aren't that many really big pointy corners waiting to catch you.

Session report conclusion
Despite my poor performance in the critical third turn I’m totally enamored with this game. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it, and I can’t wait to play again. All of the mechanisms really mesh together well to simulate the feeling of running a business (if not completely thematically, you at least feel like you’re making critical decisions that go straight to your bottom line).

The four turns are structurally identical but each feels different than the last because the relative demand is adjusted between each turn, and players are ramping up their production. Even within a turn the tension really builds, as you try to decide how much to produce, then how to possibly sell everything given what everyone else has produced. When those demand tiles are flipped over it’s actually a tense moment.

Brilliant game. A true economic simulation. Only 12 actions in the game and they are all crucial and tense(not counting character selection and executive decisions just have just as much tension). You need to be looking at least a turn ahead with each action (which is hard to do until you have a few games under your belt).

There is a fine line between conservatism and aggression in this game. Too much of either will lose it for you. You CANNOT play it safe and only produce cars are guaranteed to sell. You MUST take some risk and overproduce and find a way to stick your opponents with the losses. Dramtically over produce though, and you'll be the one eating loss cubes.

Does a great job of making you feel like you're running an American car company (not straight to the ground). Sameyness is a long-term concern, but after over a dozen plays, it's still going pretty strong thanks to the variable public demand.

Pretty difficult to explain, not so much to play if you are used to this kind of games. Economic game with a few things to take into account. It seems to me that you really take actions with a clear purpose, and I like it. You are not driven by your feelings, you can most of the times really think what you need to do. Of course, you may fail... Tree Frog has made a nice production, cars are quite nice, and the board really shows you almost everything in the game.
Not too long, nice to play, very good game, you really feel in the business. Fantastic.

Tight, tight, tight. Everything about this game is tight. A well designed game that goes from point A to point B to point C with exact precision, but without being predictable. Choices that you make at the begining of each round are so very important to determining your course of action later in the round.

This game is also a brain-burner. Lots of thinking and planning going on. There is also a great level of player screwage - not enough to make your opponent hate you and never want to play again, but just enough to gain those few extra points that you need to win the game.

An excellent MW design, and probably one of my favorites.

Perfect design. So subtly complex, I can play it with gamers and be constantly engaged yet so well-themed and fun that I can play it casually as well. A masterpiece.

What an absolutely brilliant game! A very theme-strong economic game where balance is the key; balancing the elements of the game, evolution of the product market and opponent screwage.

Plenty to think about and some very nice mechanisms, some of which are familiar from Martin's other games. The really interesting bit for me is working out how to screw over your competition without significant detriment to yourself. It can be done but involves some risk taking.

A bit of a brain burner? Could be if you think about it too much but I think it plays just as well if you play with instinct.

Rating based on two plays - one explained by Martin himself at the UK Expo and the second at a local gaming session (for local people.)

Second play and I really enjoyed this game. Very tight and most of the time you feeling like you need a pen and paper to work out the calculations. This is not a game I enjoyed at first but have grown to love it

If you are from Detroit, how could you not rank this a ten?

Plus, it really is a great game. Intricate interactions between the various mechanics, combined with the variability of how your opponents act means that every decision is tough and important.

Take an economics game. Add variable player powers, some worker placement... all the best mechanics of many different games. Factories you build become obsolete, creating a constant need to upgrade. It's like Lokomotive Werks, but fun! Furthermore, analysis paralysis, the bane of economic games, is kept to a minimum through a light sprinkling of luck. Love it!
