Marvelous game design by Knizia. Simple and clever mechanism for driving up the value of the painting. Simple and clever push-your-luck mechanism for ending the round. Mixing in face-down cards and simultaneous reveal cards for uncertainty. Quick set up. Quick game play.

I love this one. You need to do math to compute the score, and sometimes with many players a round can end quickly not giving the last player many opportunities to play scoring artwork, but I am amazed how difficult it is to win consistently at this game. Perfect balance between chaos and control.

I really like this game.......played it two player so far, and I really appreciate the feeling, mechanisms and strategy..........it exceeded my expectations by far.....and i can't wait to play it again and again...........get this game.........i will let you and me know more as i sink more into a non-knew game that i have fallen in love with mentality........long live reiner

Update: The hottest game at our week long vacation with my brother's family.......played many games.....currently our favorite card game......elegant, strategic, aesthetically pleasing, well balanced, perfect amount of luck to keep old and new hands at the game at a somewhat equal level......after one game, you start the "ah-ha! I will do that!" love it...going up to a 9 out of respect......will update as we go

can't stop playing update............love it.

(Modern Art: The Card Game) They should rename this game as "Modern Art: The Auction-free" or something since the original Modern Art was a card game anyway. The game is excellent and it may be an introduction for Modern Art as well. Tried this with 2,3,4, and 5 players. 2 is kinda weird but it works.

I didn't think I would like this as much as I did. The rules are simple and it's fast and fun. One of the coolest things about this game is that you have a huge hand full of cards, and you almost never draw new cards. This means you have to be very careful how you spend them, and makes the feel very different from anything else I've ever played.

Masters Gallery -- Played twice; three- and four-player.

Excellent filler! I think we were all surprised by how much we like this!

Masters Gallery pares away Modern Art's auctions (and thereby the connection with its theme) and leaves an elegant, satisfying filler.

Good game. Tried it with four and liked it quite a bit. We forgot a couple rules the first time, but still it was quite fun.

Update: now I've tried it with all the rules, and this is a really good game. Simple to teach, with lots to thinks about. Deeper game than you would think at first glance. It's all about timing, and setting up for big scores, especially the last two rounds. Fun game!

Modern Art without the auctions, available in one of two editions with classic or modern artwork. This will primarily appeal to those looking for a smart filler that plays quickly and yet offers interesting tactical and strategic decisions, with a clever and satisfying Knizia scoring system. Definitely one of the better fillers with Knizia's name on the box!

See my pictorial review: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/404682

Own the Master's Gallery edition.

See this thread and this thread and this thread and this thread for some rule notes about one ambiguous sentence in the rules. The correct interpretation (confirmed by the original German rules, by Knizia himself, and by how the iOS version plays, and contrary to Gryphon Games) is this: "For each different artist with MP cards displayed in front of the player, he may play one additional card OF THAT ARTIST from his hand"

Very much enjoying this game. As long as you aren't looking to compare it to Modern Art, this is a very good game. Most importantly for me, it plays well 2-player. [Masters Gallery version]

11/27/2012: I like how a player can think their doing really well in the first couple of rounds, and then get utterly destroyed in the last two. Unless it happens to me

A card game version of Modern Art without any auctions. Because of the theme, I prefer Masters Gallery over Modern Art The Card Game - even though they are both essentially the same game, the real artists and artwork makes it cool.

Modern Art without auctions. And (amazingly) its a great little game. A shame it needs pencil & paper to record scores. Released in 2 versions. I went for the low-cost, small box, funky pop-art artwork of Modern Art: the card game rather than the pretentious expensive Masters Gallery. Because I’m worth it.

Modern Art without the auctions. If you think that sounds odd, it's not. Good little game.

I really like this game. While I can get people to play it, I don't think anyone else I know likes it as much as I do. It can be a little hard at first to see the strategy, but it is there and very clever.

My initial reaction to this game was that taking the auctions out of Modern Art was just a crazy idea, and MA is renown for being one of the premier pure auction games. But as I thought about, I realized that what I enjoy about MA is the manipulation of the artist values through the card play. The auctions were just a way to get to that, and were actually not the most interesting part of the game. In fact, I wonder if the reason that MA has so many different kinds of auctions is that they are not all that compelling on their own.

So, after this reflection, I'm thinking I would rather own Master's Gallery than Modern Art for a few reasons:

1) The valuation you need to do to play MA makes the game rather tough for newbies and also rather fragile. Someone who misvalues a painting or two can easily hand the game to someone else.

2) I really prefer the use of actual classic paintings in MG.

3) Having the essence of MA in a easy-to-teach filler package means I will get to play it a lot more.

4) Frankly, I have other games that I would rather play than MA when I'm in the mood for an auction. I think many of Knizia's own games have more interesting auction systems. I'd rank the auctions in Ra, Medici, Hollywood Blockbuster, Tower of Babel, Taj Mahal, Beowulf: The Legend all above MA for fun factor.

UPDATE: Sept 2014
FINALLY played the game, and as I suspected, the auctions are the worst thing about Modern Art. In contrast, Master's Gallery is a wonderful distillation of the best aspects of Modern Art.

Played the Modern Art: The Card Game version. Although it does not have the fabulous bidding part of regular Modern Art, this is a lot of fun too. It plays quickly and is easy to learn. I was disappointed that there is only one work pictured for each artist (it is repeated on all of that artist's cards). A game about art should really have more art.

Production: Good quality cards. Elegant player aid. I would have liked to have seen different works of art for all the cards, rather than just six per artist.

Play: I enjoy this more than Modern Art. It's fun to both influence the price of the art, and to invest in it, using the cards with symbols at just the right time. (2+2+4) (1 play)

Good survey of common auction mechanics in games.

If you're interested in game design at all, you should put this on your list of must plays. It shows off a range of interesting self balancing auctioning mechanics that could easily be grafted into other games.

This is actually a pretty good game! Initially I did not have much expectation, but after learning the rules. It's such a good game to play at lunch time. Enough depth, enough trash talk, fun to think and yet, it doesn't take too much attention (which is good for a lunch game).

Thumbs up for this one!

Classy Subtle Card Game. 3 rounds of hand management and commodity speculation of Master Artists and their works. Worth playing to the end. Bonus that it features classic works of art. This is similar to the game Modern Art but without the auctions. Plays also the same as it's sister the Modern Art Card Game.

For a Knizia game, this has good feel to it. I like this game better than Modern Art.
