Amazingly fun, and it's based on an animanga, so I'd play it even if the rules were written by a six-year-old. Played much differently from the version of "Duel Monsters" on the anime, you can't just play whatever ungodly-powerful monster you want from the start and wipe out your opponents life points at the drop of a hat. You have to sacrifice (Tribute) your other monsters to summon the higher-level beasts. Thus, playing a Deck with 3 Blue-Eyes White Dragons is a bad idea, as they all require two Tributes to be summoned.

The only flaw I see in this game is the lack of interesting cards, thus limiting gameplay options. Many Duelists (players of the game) play all the same cards in their Decks, as those cards are the "best" cards. And there's no doubt in my mind that that will continue on until they stop releasing the card game.

I though that this would have been 'childish', what with
the cartoon series etc. but I was wrong! This has great depth and good game mechanics. A great deal of strategy is required to be good at this game. Chess it isn't but it comes close.

I started watching this show with my son...in order to bond with him on Saturday mornings...and I figured a show about a card game was perfect. I was right. The show can be childish sometimes...but I found myself liking the card game. So I picked up some starter decks of my son's favorite characters and started teaching him. Now we both love the game. I understand some of the comments written about the game...how "rarer" cards can be more powerful...but if you are playing this with friends, as opposed to building killer decks to play at tournaments...the game is a LOT of fun. I recommend getting just a couple of starter or structure decks...playing with those and then mixing them a little. The booster packs are high priced so I stay away. But it is so easy to get cards on ebay or Amazon (100s for a couple of bucks). Maybe they are not the most powerful cards in the universe...but there is a lot of variety...and that leads to a lot of strategic thinking and play.

This is a fantastic TCG that is a lot of fun to play. When it first started out it was very rudimentary, but now is one of the most strategic of games. IT'S TIME TO DUEL!

Fun combos + deck creation. Have a Macro Cosmos deck IRL. The only huge letdown is that newer decks tend to make the older decks obsolete.

Thank god I play it mostly on psp.

Great gameplay. Lots of strategy and combos that can turn the tide of battle instantly. Rules are easy to learn, but the strategy of how and when to use the cards will take some time to master.

Anyone who says this game is like MTG is wrong. It plays completely differently and is a much more strategic and complex game at the professional level. It's a great tcg but it does have it faults like any other tcg.

Previously owned it for Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii.

I refuse to buy the TCG's or CCG's "whoever has the most disposable income wins" game.

What I did was find someone else that had a ton of cards, play their extras against them, and then get addicted.

Since I won't buy the cards but wanted them all, I got the DS games. I had a lot of fun with the game... just not the concept of buying the cards.

Yes, I know. This game is flawed beyond belief and is quite an emberrasment in terms of game design. That being said, this was THE game for me when I was growing up, which makes this game more enjoyable than it should be simply for nostalgia sake. Considering how I just played this game for ten hours straight until six in the morning, you could say the game is fun, if not completely broken.

Okay, this is NOT a deep game and from a high level, has many flaws. But I have such great childhood memories of playing this game with my friend Sam. I loved the Fire Princess card and trying to make a deck that would burn as you healed. I'll probably never play it again, but I still have my deck.

We never played Pokemon. We never got into Magic. But YuGiOH! was our addiction some years ago. The TV show hooked us and off we went. Alas now 90% of the cards we had are gone and we've just kept our core decks. If only we could have back all the cash we spent on this game. It was fun and occasionally still is. But clearly the time of Duel Monsters (that's what the game was called in the TV series) has come and gone we think. For us and many others.

After giving the game a second chance, my rating has gone up. While I still think that the starter decks have a few issues, I've indeed discovered that this game is not as "best-cards-win" as I may have suspected. In fact, the more powerful cards in the game can often be a huge burden to a player, allowing the player with the more broad-situation cards to take control of a game quite easily. People with tightly constructed decks can undoubtedly resort to cheesy "power-gaming", but if the players are relatively casual (i.e., are not trying to create theme decks of specific, single-minded purposes), the game can be very fun and challening with strategic possibilities that become very addictive. Major downside to the game is that Fusion and Ritual monsters require sets of cards to be effective. Without all the appropriate cards, the monsters are almost completely useless, which is probably why so few people even bother with those cards. That's where the money aspect comes in. On the upside, though, a careful look through the available cards will reveal that a few well-chosen, non-rare, non-high-level monsters and cards can often fill the purpose of one super-powerful monster that takes forever to bring into play. I've played games where what seemed like a surefire victory (I'm near dead, they've still got all their life points) turned into a heated battle then eventually a surprise victory. So, without a doubt, there's an "economy" strategy here that many kids probably won't figure out right away. The only thing I don't agree with are the cards that allow for automatic wins (Exodia sets and Destiny Board sets), but those are so rare ($500+ on Ebay sometimes) I doubt you'll encounter it much in public play. Also, ignore any buzz you might be hearing about so-called "God" cards allowing people to dominate tournaments. God cards are promotional curiosities from the TV show and are not legal in any way, shape, or form. The people using them (and/or allowing them) should be flogged.

For a game based on a kids TV show, there's an incredible level of strategy and deck building. Its one of the better CCGs I've played. The biggest negative is the HUGE amount of power-creep in each set.

Played my first game of this in a very long while with Mr. Billington (2-25-2012), and I won. He was using the Joey deck and I was using the Yu-Gi-Oh deck. Curious to see how our next game will turn out now that we'll each have one (each) of the Yu-Gi-Oh, Kaiba, and Joey decks. I don't think I'll mix them, but Mr. Billington probably will (he's alot better at creating playing decks than I am; he's more structured thinking-wise, I'm more improvisational thinking-wise).
