the navigation-as-drawing-blindfolded mechanic is brilliant. The rest of the game is not only thin, it is actually degenerate. There is a group-loss condition that any player can easily bring about, so anybody who is losing will simply nuke the game for everybody. Played as a perfect coop, the game has some hope.

Picked up in Essen. Two versions, basic and advanced. Played the basic game with 4 and we had a blast! The blind navigation was fun, but Amsterdam (the game) kicked our butts.

2014: played with the designer and had fun with it again. Very dependent on the group. Much more enjoyable if you are not very good at it. I had an amazing run on one trip that had us all cheering, but also one where I navigated off the edge of the map!

Navigation mechanic using wipe-off maps and erasable pens really shines; apart from that, an average game lacking in interesting strategy decisions. Game must be played semi-cooperatively due to the difficulties in navigation which encourage multiple players to form syndicates and also due to the extreme difficulty of defeating Amsterdam (if Amsterdam wins, all players lose). After one play, I'm not sure that it's possible to defeat Amsterdam, at least with three players. Spice cards/tokens would have benefitted from clearer differentiation among the different kinds of cargoes.

Nothing quite like it out there. Drawing on the dry-erase boards with just one-word navigation commands is quite fun (although clearly many things are out of your control due to it as well). Well worth a try and very cheap for a Splotter game!

I'm not quite sure how to rate this one. The game is great fun and there's no doubt that it is made by the blind map drawing thing. But, the actual meat & potatoes (id est, the trading/fulfilling contracts) is quite pedestrian by today's standards. There just isn't much there and the game seemed to drag after a while.

As you would expect from Splotter, the components are very well done.

Man, this game is sooooo close to being awesome! The blind drawing mechanic, with the other sailors on the boat being able to give you minor guidance is awesome. The fine line between when you want to be helpful vs. when you want to bone over the captain is also pretty cool. Even the goods delivery concept is pretty neat.

However, in the end, the elements just don't quite come together in a way that feels quite right. The main problem seems to be that the maps are slightly too difficult, making successful deliveries a little too much on the tedious side, which therefore makes contracts a little too hard to fulfill.

The game also lasts far too long for what it is. This would make a great hour long game. Several hours though, and the gimmick starts to wear a bit.

In the end, this game is just a little more development away from probably being a 7 or an 8.

Quirky game. Strategics mixed with blind sailing. Very odd. Fun to play though. It's hard to see strategics when you're busy sailing blind by the way.

Splotter has made better games, but this one is quite funny to play.

The blind drawing makes the game almost too hard, while making it less hard makes the game too easy. Players need to both beat Amsterdam (the game) while negotiating to beat each other.

One play. This has fun mechanics and I'm sure we'll play it again, but not without house rules.

1. The negotiations took too long and often left one person out. We think that a sand timer that could be started by anyone anytime could really impact the game positively.

Our first game took 3 hours and then we called it, although if we had played as quickly as we did at the end from the start it would only have been about 2 hours. Still, I think 60-90 minutes advertised is very optimistic. The game needs people to really be on task and draw one ship after another with no downtime to have any hope of making those numbers.

2. The start player marker should move around the circle in some way. Having the same person start every round does not make sense. I've been thinking that it should go forward and then back on the second part of the placement phase (so that the last player gets two in a row and the first player also gets the last move. Then the marker should move around the table before the next turn.

Still, I liked the game quite a bit. Boat movement is very original. Solid 7 with tweaks. 6 without some ways of making people play quickly.

Basic game:  6.5  - The blind sailing is tense and fun. The rest of the game is sort of there, but does give you incentives to sail to difficult places.

Advanced game: TBD - but it sounds like the strategic part of the game will be more to my tastes than in the basic game.

The "close you eyes and navigate your ship around a map" bit is a real hoot, but the serious part lets it down a bit. However, I have only played the basic game and the advanced rules look likely to add a bit more strategy and balance, which is to be welcomed.

Initial impressions:

Not as fun as I had hoped. There are some serious rules oddities that need clearing up. Basic game is somewhat necessary for a first play (played advanced the first time; disastrous), but terribly boring.

Took a long time with 5 players. Would hope to speed it up in the future.

Play basic rules. I wish I could find people to play this with. But, it doesn't play well as a competitive game. To many people then want to crash the boat AND those that don't want to crash the boat get yelled at by competitive people for crashing.

One play ... basic game. A little overly long for what it is (90 mins?!? Our first game took about 3 hours), and I can see being left without much of a meaningful decision in the last few rounds if the right combination of contracts and goods aren't out there for you ... but I've never come across a more fun combination of strategy and party game. One wonders how it would hold up to repeated play, and I can't see playing the nearly impossible looking advanced game. I could see incorporating components of it ... like placing your workers individually ... but the whole contract bidding system just looks fatal. Anxious to give this another try and see if we can't speed it up a little.

The blind drawing is certainly a unique mechanism, and a fun one, and it carries this game. The rest of it is only so-so, so if the idea of drawing blind with dry-erase markers doesn't wind you up, skip it.

This game is out of control. The exploration bit is genius. It is everything Die Hanse wishes it were. But, then there is the whole market game that brings everthing to a new level. After getting a few plays in you get to realise that this game can be particularly nasty. Deals that go sour, and uncooperative captains make new and innovative ways to gut your friends.

Still, the game is a hoot. I've only played the advanced game, but I suspect that it is a bit more of what I like. I've incorporated Amsterdam into the Advanced game and recommend using four flipped cards rather than three.

Rating up a point after second 5 player advanced game, which great improvement over 3 player.

Nice unique system for voyaging and a number of subtle strategies hidden in the system. Can be a bit long, and pace does not accelerate through the game.

Potential for a lot of fun with right group.
