This game is amazingly fun! I love the puzzle-ish aspect of it, combined with the worker placement of the minions. But even moreso, the theme makes the game as great as it is.

This game seems to be inspired by the great PC game Dungeon Keeper.

It retains all the flavor and feel of said game while taking the best of worker placement and Vlaada's own mechanics, as well as tensions, from Galaxy Trucker and Space Alert.

There's certainly a heaping serving of luck and screwage, and much of the "just survive" element in this game; but perhaps that's much of the charm. Further once you have mastered the combat the game becomes an effortless fun-fest, and you can bask in the glory of your own evil.

It's more than what I expected, and on flavor alone this would get a 9; however the play is quite nice, and promises even better as it has a major set of unused components whose purpose is as yet unrevealed.

Can this designer fail? Not yet at least.

15 games played. It takes about 3 hrs with my group. This is one of those rare games that make you say: next time, NEXT TIME, I can do better. I just cannot get enough of it. I like the theme, and it flows so well after having learned the rules. Luck involved is non-invasive: I always have the feeling that I can control my game... somehow.
Go, get it, play it. It's very good bang for your bucks.

Rating after one play: thematic fullfilling experience. The game promises "Dungeon Keeper" feeling and it fullfills it in spades. Great. My rating will very well go up with additional plays.
Update (25/06/11): This game is heavy, this game is complex, this game is very thematic and always a ride! Played ONLY with 4 players and wish to keep it this ways. Therefore only few plays. But I LOVE this, have to rise my rating to a 9.
Update (03/12/12): played this game also with fewer people (3). It works just as fine as with 4. a great great game.
Update: After playing it a few times with the expansion I must say it stood the test of time for me. 10!

Much like galaxy trucker this game is rich with theme. It is a bit heavier and harder for the casual gamer to pick up. It is an excellent game that gives plenty of difficult choices but at the end you don't care too much if you won or lost because the experience was so awesome.

Wicked theme, wonderful mechanics, great sense of humor... and very challenging. After playing with four players and two players I'm really, really impressed with this game. The teo player game still includes all four player boards, with one order nominally in control of each player, with two random orders per round. This simulates the other two players pretty darn well, and I did not feel that the game came up lacking at all as a two player game.

Dungeon Lords... ahh Dungeon Lords!

The game has a fantastic theme, and it works really well for me. Like Bryan, I was a fan of the Dungeon Keeper PC games (why the heck has this not come out on Steam or for the Playstation Network already?), but I felt that Vlaada did a great job of capturing the wit and feel of those games.

I love the art. The board, the monsters, the implied douchey-ness of the adventurers. The components all look fantastic (and I have yet to print the minion stickers for my copy as yet!).

Now for the difficult part: explaining the love of the game part of the game. I really enjoy the fact that you need to play the game a bit to get good at it. I think that you need to plan further ahead in this game than in many other games. One turn ahead is not enough. The game tells you what is coming up, there is no way that you should be caught unawares during payday or tax season once you have a couple of games under your belt. I think that you should not only be planning ahead for what you need for a given turn (gold/food/evil) but be trying to mess with the plans of your opponents. I can't understate the importance and fun of using the subtle mechanisms of the game to mess with your opponents. It can be as overt as blocking someone from getting a resource when they need it, bumping them up or down a level in the order resolution for a given order (it can be a terrible blow to be bumped up or down in the order resolution queue for many of the orders, as you may not have the resources to get what you needed from the order, despite ending up with the 'better' position in the queue) or manipulating your evilometer to force a 'bad' adventurer onto an opponent. Take a monster that your opponent wanted, and force one with a more punishing upkeep onto them, or even have them not recruit at all! I just love seeing these little chips in the wall come together and form large cracks. I don't think that you actually need to be punching someone in the face for them to feel like that's what happened at the end of the game! Even better, once you're playing with people for a while, the metagame starts to become a bigger part of the game, and you're outwitting the plans laid to mess with you!!

Once all that has played out, you get to have fun with a puzzle to defeat the adventurers with what you have at hand! The adventurers you draw are important, but the ability to think on your feet and set up crazy chains of events and wacky situations to win is even more important! Positioning yourself to take and destroy an injured paladin here is also a LOT of fun!

So to sum it up: it's a game with a lot of subtle interaction, that rewards the ability to think on your feet, adjust to an ever changing situation and looks fantastic. What's not to like?

I want to comment (again) about the opinions I've seen that there are not enough meaningful decisions. I agree that at the start you end up with "I need gold, so I'll mine gold" situations. The more you play, you prevent getting into that position, or get screwed HARD by someone and learn the lesson... plan ahead. What I see a lot of new players missing is the fact that the mistake was not necessarily that they didn't have enough gold, but maybe that they did not have enough imps and didn't mine up some extra gold the time the mined prior to that.... missing that the 'bad' decision was actually an imp shortage NOT a gold shortage. The result was not enough gold and a dead letter or three for your trouble.
