Just about the best means of socialising with the same sex! Don't bother playing with less than five though.

What can I say, this is my favorite game of all time. No luck, infinite tactical and strategic depth, you have to know military tactics and psychology, and immense replay value. Ok, it's awkward to find 7 players, and if you don't play a timed game it takes forever, but I still love it. Unique.

I have no idea how my rating sat at 7 for 6 years on the 'geek before I noticed and corrected it. I've NEVER had a bad time playing this game, and there are almost no games I've played multiple times about which I can make the same statement.

My favorite of all games in all categories. Unique game play. All the game is besides the board, in negotiations. Listen at the door, lie, backstab, play innocent....
Never play less than 7, unless you use a special variant. Goes perhaps better in PBEM than FTF.

The ultimate game, but not for the faint-hearted. If you can make a deal with a player willing to finish second, you can win -- just watch your back!

This is my favorite game. There is no luck in this game, totally up to the "political" skills of the player. Most fun when played with a backstabbing group. A totally honest group just makes this a game of math and probability and really boring. It does take a while and is difficult to find enough players to make it fun. We played it my dorm with weekly moves, it was a blast and made you paranoid all week!

I think to be a true gamer (not something everyone who enjoys playing games should or needs to aspire to), one has to master the play of Diplomacy, and should at least win from time to time. It's sort of a trial by fire that everyone who aspires to grasp the Zen of gaming should pass through and master. It teaches you (sometimes brutally) all the skills you need to be a good social gamer: the ability to both play quite competitively and still walk away from it at the end of the day as just a game, realizing that winning isn't that important; the ability to assume a role in a game that is not you, and appreciate what's happening in the game as important and interesting but apart from you as a real person; and the need for constructive social interaction even within the confines of what is a cutthroat game, and that being a jerk is no more productive here than in any other reality. And of course Diplomacy is a masterful game in and of itself, with simple, easily-grasped rules that enable a tremendously rich game experience. I particularly like how Diplomacy games evolve an interesting narrative and do so organically, without the "plot coercion" common in modern games (especially the card-driven games like Here I Stand or The Napoleonic Wars, even with all their strengths).
---
A true classic which everyone should play ... once, at least. Must admit to being a little surprised about the length compaints; I once played 3 games in one day (not somthing I'd recommend), and games took about 6 hours - long enough to be a problem, admittedly, but still faster than many American games (Junta is longer, and has a fraction of the content). Still, it hardly needs to be stated that the nature of the game will change dramatically with the players, and players who can't separate games from reality will not be desirable to play with. Still, many years ago, this was the staple of my gaming diet. Rather long by today's standards, has a rather sever player-elimination problem, can be arbitrary and a bit vindictive for the kinder, gentler gaming generation; but for a negotiation game with an international power-politics feel, it can't be beat.
---
Edition Notes: Basically, to get a good copy of this game, you need to go back to the old Avalon Hill bookcase edition with the wooden pieces. Most other editions of this game have been crap. The plastic pieces (stars and anchors) that Avalon Hill introduced in some editions were strange, and were so small they made the board look vacant. The "new" AH edition, that used the Monopoly cannons and ships for pieces, was actually fairly nice, but the gargantuan box was a bit of a downer. I kinda liked the Gibson Games edition with garish colors and the bullets for pieces, but more for its brazenly tacky color choices than anything reasonable. The new WotC edition has a nice price point, but the pieces are not great; at least it's a small-ish box!

Simple to learn and have a great fun! Deep with almost no luck involved!! Having many interaction between players, high educational and gameplay value, but needs too many people to have a "full gameplay", A Classic!!

Best game ever made. A few warnings however: Don't play the game with less then seven players. Don't play the game with people who needs to go home at a specific time. Don't play the game with non-gamers. Don't play the game with people who can't accept lies. Don't start the game if not having 7+hours to finish. i.e. not a game you play very often.

Still it's well worth it's ten and I would rate it even higher if possible.

The best diplomatic and intrigue game there is. Rules are simple which makes it easy to learn. However mastering the game is impossible . The requirement for large number of players makes it only occasional fun.

Classic negotiation game. It doesn't get any better than this. It can be cutthroat, though, so don't invite any to to play who's feelings are easily hurt.

When you have a group of competent and mature players, the race each turn to connive things your way, to rescue situations going badly, to truly see how things all around the board are affecting each other, and manipulate them and take advantage of them ... it can provide an adrenalin rush and a satisfaction hard to find in other multi-player games. I'll tend to only play it by email now, preferring it to face to face (unless all the players know what they're doing, and are game-mature, which can be hard to find).
