Use lots of house rules and maps and counters to make this the ancient monster it could have been, designed a PUnic war version which mated well with it.

Setting aside the tactical system--a clunky, if noble effort that does not quite work--the operational play is among the most satisfying gaming experiences I have encountered.

This has been in my top six for years, and I would love to get the reprint now that it is finally here. The original maps need good lighting or younger eyes, though it is not an issue that cannot be overcome; just try squinting or using a stronger light. The reprint maps and the counters both add brightness and clarity, from the images I have seen, making a good game better.

----------------------------

In 2012 I purchased the updated version which came without almost NO counters. This was through CSW. To its credit, DG made good on the counters. Everything is clearer and brighter, but, as is the case with DG, there was nothing of substance done with the rules.

Had this one briefly in the early eighties. Loved the detail, but couldn't find any of my buddies that shared my enthusiasm. As I recall, I gave this one away. Of course, I should kick myself for having done that...

Not played for many years, but I remember having some good three player games with the the Romans. Would probably not be able to play again these days but will only get thrown out when I do! Best game model of Romes expansion into the Eastern Med I have come across. Excellent study tool and good game.

One of the few operational games on ancient warfare.
An early game using interception rules. Captures the ability single army blocking several key points.

I liked the abstract tactical battle. While a bit much detail for the level of the game - captured the push of the phalanx and the flexibility of the legion.

The Roman scenarios are the best, Rome is trying to do the war though allies in the 2nd Macedonian war.
Thought it gave a good account of ancient campaigns.

Romans: classic - played in my mid-teens. Came up with simple house rule for command hierarchy, limiting tribune to single legion command. Tribunes cannot command naval units. Multi-legion forces need consul or praetor. Consuls, outrank, praetors & tribunes (in order) most senior leader is in charge. (Dispatch inefficient leaders away from the front.)

Macedonians: was probably even more fun ... in fact I once defeated Alexanders' army not long after it crossed the Hellespont into (my) Persian Empire.

Never really got into the Tactical game though ... "superceded" by GMT's GBOH series ancient tactical-level games.

An amazing depiction of operational warfare in antiquity. Although Berg's later efforts are better simulations, and maybe even better games, this is the one I long to play again.

System showing its age (at least compared to Berg's Ancient World system) but nice to see some lesser known campaigns being fought, and I really love those old SPI counter icons. Quite experimental with its tactical display (which I have not used)

Bumped up a point - I have played both of the Roman scenarios (versus Philip V and Antiochus the Great), and think they are a refreshing change from the usual Carthage fare. Decent system. I wonder if some aspects of the Ancient World could be retrofitted to these scenarios?

Two full size games in one package; strategic games of Alexander the Great's conquest of Persia, and the emergence of the Roman Empire. That by itself would be enough but there are also companion tactical systems. Special layouts guide (some would say force) the players into the tactics that each of these military systems used to succeed on the battlefield. For quicker play, however, battles could be resolved with a CRT. Components reminiscent of the PRESTAGS series, nice maps for the time, moderately complex when using all the rules. I had fun with it.

played this game many a time years ago. i very much liked how the tactical battle flowed from the strategic game. I was always surprised that an expansion with the western Mediterranean did not come out to have the Punic Wars included. In the end, I think it was the mis-match between the Romans and everyone else (Macedonia and Syria) that hurt the game play...and I remember the Alexander-Darius to be somewhat even more of a walk-over. I did, if I remember correctly, play a game where it was Macedonia against Syria...that was the best one, if I recall correctly. I think this is a good addition to a collection, and hope that a re-print is in the works out there somewhere...

The battleboard was a bit silly, but when resolving the battles with the abstract CRT, the game worked pretty well.

One of my most anticipated games of all times, and one of my biggest disappointments. The tactical display was cool in theory, but lousy in practice. That alone wouldn't have wrecked the game, but there were also numerous ways to 'game' the strategic system in unrealistic fashion. Too much overhead for too little payoff.

Rules look very good.
However Excalibre edition is awful. Counters are horrible and the legion vs phalanx tactical display is simply missing. Looking for the old version. A shame.

Note for the production value (3 for the beautiful maps)

Rating is for the Excalibre reprint, but the rating would still be bad even for the original.

What a total screwjob. Not only were the rules underdeveloped, the reprint was totally botched. This is yet another Berg gamekit rather than a proper game, and after reading the errata and "suggestions" from Moves Magazine, it's horribly obvious the game never got any serious playtesting. By the designer's own admission, one of the scenarios doesn't work with the scale of the game. For fuck's sake.

To add insult to injury, the Excalibre reprint doesn't include one of the tactical charts. It wasn't a shipping mistake, they just never made the goddamn thing. Oh, and they didn't bother to update the rules or charts to include the errata from Moves Magazine, either. They just reprinted the original rules. They also somehow managed to make the counters worse than the original game.

At best this game might be good to borrow some ideas from for operational ancients fans, but that's about it.

Sold at a major loss.
