I'm surprised my four-year-old is able to play this so well - including holding the tears when an opponent sends her camel back to the pack. Good fun, and tense too. Introduces tactical thinking: should I move my last camel up to avoid sandstorms or make sure my lead camel gets home first? Seems to have a player issue: With 3, most camels make it, with 4, most don't.

Disclaimer: Kids game. Score reflects how much I enjoy playing this with my four-year-old daughter.

Rating based on a kids game that is playable with adults.

Another one of those racing games where you have 4 racers each and must decide which move on and which are to be lost, much like Midnight Party. However unlike most others that use dice, in this game you pull chits out of bag, but the decisions are just as excrutiating.

I think this one ranks up there with the best HABA has to offer. The amount of strategy is perfect for a kids' game. There's nothing my 4-yo can't grasp, yet there are interesting decisions to be made almost every turn.

I like drawing the tiles out of the bag because you can better plan based on what's already been drawn. This game has been quite effective at giving my son a basic understanding of some probability concepts.

Interestingly, I rarely beat my son's combination of luck and 4-yo's strategy.

I would say that it's probably not the best game for very sensitive children, though, as there is some tension about losing the camels and also opportunities to send opponents' camels backward (possibly into danger).

Plays way over it's head. Very solid kid game that's good for adults, too. Likely will require parental (or older kid) supervision until age seven. But quick and fun. A bad set of tiles can be bone crushing! but the good news is that by drawing them out of a bag there is only so much bad luck to go around and soon things start going your way again. The switcheroo tiles and the oasis and shifting dune spaces make for some good solid offensive and defensive strategy decisions -- far more interesting than the average kid game. Well worth your time to play, and well worth the price.

A nice, surprisingly interesting and fast game. You have few choices to make, but they have shocking results the first time you play, as you watch half your camels swept up in a sandstorm and removed from the game (converted thus into 1VP each).

[LUP 27-Dec-2006] Had to get this as a family game for Christmas this year, the real rules are different to the translated rules we had, all camels start on the board next to the oasis and the "swap" tile is not a "swap" tile at all. [14-Nov-2006] We borrowed this from caterpillargames.com.au as an addition to our demonstration suite of games. A big hit with Daughter the Elder and Daughter the Younger too (who picked up how to play the game just from watching us play). The translated rules we have state that the Sand Dune (as opposed to normal desert) tile starts at the bottom which can make the first couple of turns very risky and entirely luck dependent with reasonable chance of one or more camels being lost to a Sand Storm. I prefer to set the Sand Dune up next to the Market. That means if players run the risk of camel elimination later in the game, it will almost always be due to their choice, not just the game setup and the luck of the tile draw conspiring against them.

Up the River was a neat concept, with a good theme. But there are some problems with the game, because a bad set of die rolls can really bog it down. The dice deck in Marrakesh fixes that. As is the case with most Haba games, the artwork is outstanding as well. Too bad it doesn't still have the river theme, though, I like that a little better than the desert theme. But this is the better game of the two.

A little bit of a cheat to have this on my list, as technically my daughter owns this. This game has been a big success this Christmas, not only in introducing gaming as a hobby to my daughter, but also in getting my non-gamer wife to join in. The components are good quality, there is enough decision making to keep the grown-ups happy, it introduces some concepts (like a modular board), and plays well with 2, 3 and 4 people.

I have rated this child's game on my interest in playing it with the appropriate age group.

This game has some strategy, good components, and for this age group, the introduction of a different game mechanic--that of the moving board and the need to keep their last pawn moving up. Plays quickly, with easy rules. Good game.

More fun with 3-4.

Draw a tile, move a camel that many spaces. There are some interesting choices introduced by some of the tiles, and you have to balance which of your four camels you need to move to keep them away from the sandstorm. It's a step above a simple roll and move game, though that is basically at the heart of this game. Fun to play with the kids.

Very simple but highly polished racing game. Waiting for a "sandstorm" tile to be drawn -- with the dramatic possibility of a lagging camel being lost from the board -- reminded me of the tension of seeing whether El Torro will charge in Viva Pamplona! The game's not rocket science, but it has a nice flow and plenty of good laugh moments.

This is an updated & re-themed version of the Ravensburger game UP THE RIVER. This is the better of the two versions, btw - drawing tiles from the bag & the variable scoring make for a more kid-friendly game.

Tweak of Up the River but with enhancements: Draw movements from a bag instead of a die roll (allows game to be adjusted for number of players and evens out move distribution). Choose treasure at goal instead of fixed points (gives followers some chance to catch the leader).

After playing two and three-player games, I think the fun is in 3+ players. It just seemed too easy without much pressure in the two-player game. However, in the three player game, there was a total of seven camels who went to camel heaven; much more interesting.

After having played this a couple of times, I'm confident that this is a six, but potentially a 7 if considered for pub play. There is enough randomness in this to let rookies play, but enough determinism that you can actually play "smart" or "dumb," and this seems to strike a nice balance. Also, the pieces themselves are great, and the language-free factor makes this playable in relatively low light. The "sometimes, your camels will just die" factor reminds me pleasantly of SURVIVE! First game was a two-player game with my son. At first it seemed that the game really punishes you if you have poor luck pulling your tiles. The poor luck of the sandstorms cause you to not move forward AND pulls a land piece from behind you to in front of the marketplace - which can accelerate you possibly losing your camels stuck in the back if you pull this tile too often. However, at game's end, this luck factor seems to even out quite nicely.

Subsequent three-player (adult) game was interminably long. It just never seemed to end. Felt like it was the same thing over and over again.

The game plays well with my four-year-old. He doesn't quite have the attention span to make it through the complete game, but he's close and he has fun.
