My favorite hybrid game of 2009! Production is out of this world. Just love how different all those important prayers to the gods are, and how much they can change the game when done at the right time. With two players it's pretty good, with five it was a ton of fun. *Update* - Hades pushes Cyclades to a 10. Loved the heroes, new creatures, and Hades!

I play with the proto and the final release of the game during the "Monde du Jeux" in Paris.

Really fast game (about one hour and a half), but very interesting to play for a (hardcore)gamer because there is a lot of choice to do...

A million of possibility to win :-p

A multiplayer "waro" that doesn't make the player a hostage of the will of the others at the table. Fast setup, fast rounds and you can finish a light (but never shallow) 5-players civ game in under 2 hours. Marvelous art. And with just the right ammount of randomness. The designer got several elements right, like how the bidding works, the randomly available gods (actions), the low spread of the combat dice, the themed flavour of the creature deck, the reasonable compensation rules (Apollo and the one-island rule), the non-VP victory condition and the almost abscence of player elimination. A master class in modern boardgame design.

The badass uncle of Hellas, with an awesome auction engine and cool resource management. The mythological creatures and the random order of gods keep it fresh, runs fast, extremely strategical and mindblowingly exciting.

Been having so much fun with this one. Excellent combination of bidding and war: a hybrid of Eurogame and Ameritrash (Eurotrash). To date, this is my most beautiful game to look at (wish someone would paint my minis though). Really, I find it absolutely stunning - the sculpts for each of the five armies are different, the map looks colorful, but in a very tasteful way, the artwork is fabulous, and even the player sheilds are a pleasure to stare at.

There is quite a high level of luck in the battles, but the play time is short, and to me, its not the kind of game where the luck ever reaches a frustrating level. The mythical creatures deck adds variation to each game too.

Note - we have house ruled that only three creatures max can be replaced with the power of zeus. The mechanic of paying gold to riffle through the entire deck is to me just, well...silly. Also thinking of house ruling the Pegasis power down quite a bit. The effect of these house rules is to bend the game a tiny bit to our desires. Without these house rules, the game can tend to make huge, quick swings in power, and we prefer a slower, more evenly paced game - but that's just us.

I LOVE this game!! Since I was a kid I have always been into Greek mythology and Cyclades is a game which delivers not only such a wonderful theme, it also brings a lot of tactical options to the table. I especially like the way how your tactics need to be adjusted by the moves of the other players so you constantly need to have an eye on them too. Great gameplay, wonderful artwork... Cyclades is one of my personal favorites!

Me and my girlfriend really love this game.

It's easy to teach and to learn, but it's really deep too. You almost always have a lot of option each turn. Each god gives you interesting options and none is a bad choice. Also, if you get stuck with a god you didn't need for this turn, you can alway buy a creature to screw your opponents (except if you got Apollo). Played this game a lot of times and it never feels repetitive since the gods available and their order is random eahc turn, and the creatures available also.

Most wins are always a surprise. You have one player well on his way to win and bang! On the last turn, it's the least succesful player that manages a masterful stroke to win. For example, in one 2 player game I had no metropolis and my girlfriend had 2 (you need 3 to win in a 2 player game). In the last turn, she managed to build her last metropolis for an almost certain win, but playing last, I managed to gain a fourth philosopher so I got my first metropolis, i bought a University to complete my set of for building which got me my second metropolis, and I bought the pegasus card which allowed me to invade one of her island and steal one of her metropolis which got me my third. You should have seen the look on her face...

The game is built in a way that you will never be stuck with nothing to do on a turn. You can obtain a metropolis through contruction, philosophy or military might.

You could break the game by abusing the power of Zeus, cycling through the creatures deck and coming up with unbeatable creatures combo, but it is easily house-ruled.

The other thing that might be problematic is that you have to build a bridge of ship to be able to invade with your troops. It works fine in the game, but it is strange and most people struggle with this aspect of the game.

My favorite game.

Very well balanced game. I really enjoy how you can use mythological creatures - they are not very strong, but can turn the tide of some battles. Moreover it is very difficult to tell who is going to win, till the last turn.

Perfect, concise military game with auction mechanics, special powers, and heated battles. On the surface, it seems like a strange mix of ideas, but it incorporates them into a fast, enjoyable game where tactics are valued over brawn. Never slow, always tense, about everything you could ask for in a game like this.

Edit: I think I've played this 4 times and it has an interesting "take down the leader" element to it, since the winning stroke can be won in 1-2 expertly executed rounds. So piling on the leader is common. That often leads to the 2nd place guy taking the lead, causing another pile on. Yet it somehow doesn't feel random or unnecessary. It all works and is never dull.

With the expansion one of my top 3 favorite games. Easy rules and easily explained to others yet complex tactics with many surprises to keep things going, almost zero downtime and playtime is perfect (~90-120 Minutes), great scalebility for 2-5 players that actually WORKS, awesome material and art, cool theme. Expansion is recommended since it balances the game to perfection. I played Cyclades with the expansion with at least 10 different persons and everybody loved it, from my girlfriend to the cambridge doctor.
Highest Recommendation.

Cyclades takes troop deployment, movement, and combat; building construction, resource gathering, card selection, and boils all those things down into one major decision each round: which god do I want to bid on? There's so much to do in this game, and I really love how the auctions on the god track keeps players focused. That element of the gods dictating what you can do makes the complexity of the game really manageable and easy to digest.

This game is also about ten months pregnant with tension as it's usually pretty easy for everyone to get a few steps away from winning.

I also really love how you need to double bluff your way to victory. By that, I mean you need one obvious and one not so obvious win option on the board that your opponents will delightfully and mercilessly screw you out of. They'll feel so triumphant because they bound you, caged you, and threw you into the depths of the ocean, absolutely destroying every chance of victory you ever had.

But then comes the "Aha suckers!" moment where you break your bindings, escape the cage, break through the surface of the water, and micturate all over every one who thought you were so thoroughly beaten; because what they failed to see was the mostly hidden third option that relies on a convoluted four card monster chain. I always feel like the winner of this game performs the best slight of hand. Eighty percent of the game is setting up this mind blowing magic trick that will leave everyone groaning in defeat. It's like having David Copperfield on your living room table. It's not about auctions, ship battles, infantry skirmishes, building buildings, or getting money. It's about magic. Everything else is illusory.

One of the coolest games around. Unfortunately, the peeps I play games with don't share my love for it. Perhaps it's because I'm always calling them suckers.

I have played this game a few times with players who kept doing Appollo, hoarding money, and never using it. It can be really disruptive to the balance of the game if that money isn't being put to use as using money is how you keep other players in check.

This game was an instant must have since the first time I heard about it. I just love greek mythology and anything that has to do with the Pantheon . The game looks great when it is spread out, components are very nice and good quality. I like the hybrid system, the combination of euro mechanics(worker placement and auction) with the ameritrash combat system.

For me this is a game that I don't see myself parting with and the people I normally play with agreed.

Great, great, great game. Gave us a lot of fun. Great cutthroat experience! You can teach it to anyone and new players can stand against veterans and defeat them. I got even better with Titans expansion which has compacted the game making it faster and more aggressive, while not adding rule clutter. Now you can fit two plays in time of one without the expansion. Must buy!

Even though it looks like a strategic and combat-heavy game, Cyclades is neither of both: actually the most decisive battles aren’t fought by the armies on the board but by the coins on the worshipping board, to get the gods’ favour. Nonetheless Cyclades isn’t either too unbalanced towards the resources’ development: it simply offers a good blend of different playstyles, kind of a neutral ground appeasing both the strategic and the euro gamer.

I really like how the mythologic side was handled, for the game’s authors show respect both for the setting and all things classical. Moreover, the theme doesn’t feel like it was stuck on the game afterwards just because it’s trendy or looks cool: on the contrary it gives the impression that it was developed within the game, for it is well integrated into the mechanics.

Cyclades is a rounded off and well balanced game, allowing many different strategies: every game is undecided and unpredictable till the end and thus till the end every player still has good chances to win. Victory always comes unexpected.
This is the first time I rate a game with a 10.

Great game!

i like that every action weighs heavy and in spite of this it flowes very smoothly, because the basics are clear and simple.

But in the interaction-part the game excells and shines, gaining momentum out of the bidding and the mutual "hold the best one down".

The components are very good or great, the mechanics and the first game teachable in 10min!

My favorite game. I hesitated to give it a 10 for a long time because 2p can be brutal if the players aren't evenly matched, but that's blaming the game for a fault in the players. By that logic it would be impossible for an area control/direct conflict game to reach a 10 since that's the nature of the beast. Having realized this, the game is ideal: perfect 10.

2013: On subsequent plays, it also scales very, very well.

Can be taught in minutes, endless possibilities and true freedom on your turn to do whatever you like in any order. Makes you wonder why so many games have so many rules.

Cathala avoids the pitfalls so many designers fall into: hex map instead of diagonal moves on a grid, adjusted values on d6 so battle is flavored by luck, not solely determined by it, and a simple ruleset that can be explained in minutes.
