Cyclades is a fantastic and exciting game. At first glance it looks like a wargame set in a mythological setting, but it is much more than that. It has elements of wargaming, area control but mostly it's an auction/bidding game. To execute certain actions you need to make an offer to a specific God. This is the heart of the game and its the moment where players most often butt heads. An all round great game that plays with a full compliment of players in 60 to 90 minutes. And I hear that the Titans expansion makes this even better.

An enjoyable romp combining two of my favorite things - multiplayer conflict and auctions. Despite Cyclades' high production values and nice balancing mechanic, EVO is still the slightly better example of this hybrid genre, mostly due to the huge swings typical of Cyclades' end game.

One of the nicest productions of a dudes on a map game I've ever played. It's got a more measured pace then most of this genre with only a few troops and an auction at the start of each turn to determine which actions you're allowed to take. It's really beautiful on the table and has a nice refined feel to the rules and flow. I have heard it is a lot better with the Giants expansion but i haven't tried that yet. Hades expansion does not add much and i would pass on that.

Jogo equilibrado entre batalhas e manutenção de recursos. Não dá nenhuma impressão de ser só um "War" melhorado. Muitas formas de vencer e de se manter relevante mesmo quando se está atrás. O tema é lindamente ligado à ação. Excepcional.

Excellent blend of auction, economic engine and area conflict. Two victory points for the win leaves a small margin of victory. I wonder if kingmaking may be a common last turn problem.

I play with the proto and the final release of the game during the "Monde du Jeux" in Paris.

Really fast game (about one hour and a half), but very interesting to play for a (hardcore)gamer because there is a lot of choice to do...

After one play, I really dig it.

It's got a really neat mesh of systems and while there are a few things you need to keep track of, it's never overwhelming. I also like that feeling of escalation as time goes on. Tight gameplay, for sure.

As an added bonus, it plays pretty well with 5 and didn't overstay its welcome/drag on.

I'd really want another play to judge it since in my first play I was sort of doing the worst and then I pulled a victory out of my butt on the last turn thanks to a surprise Pegasus and an undefended temple.

Much like Cathala's other games, this one feels really disjointed. It's not sure whether it wants to be an auction game or a light war game, and as a result it feels like you're playing two games at once. I didn't necessarily dislike the game, but I didn't enjoy myself either. The presentation is quite good, but the fun factor leaves a lot to be desired. If it was just the auction end of things, I think I'd enjoy this a lot more. The conflict/area control just felt really tacked-on and uninteresting.

Very fun 'dudes on a map' with some additional euro-esque mechanics to give it some bite. The near-inability to knock someone out of the game is very nice and keeps it entertaining throughout for all.

An interesting merger of a Euro-style auction mechanic with moving armies about the board and fighting by rolling dice. I think it's a good game - it looks absolutely beautiful too - but these days I rarely find myself wanting to play it. The various different mythological creatures keep each game different - but Pegasus is overpowered (not game-breakingly so, but definitely in the sense that even a first-time player needs to be told that it exists so that they can plan for it). The rules, which do a good job on most things, also do a woefully inadequate job of explaining exactly how the creatures work (there is a separate reference sheet with all of them on, but it is far too sketchy), meaning that either a quick decision on how to interpret them, or looking up rules questions on BGG, is necessary.

It's still an excellent game, though - just not one that's often on my "I want to play this tonight" list. In fact, we haven't played it in since at least 2013, and I can't say I'm in a rush to play again.

A very good-looking and thematic game. Mechanically well-thought of, with a great balance between betting and fighting, despite progressing quite slowly. The miniatures are awesome! You have a lot of options, but all opions seem to get you at the same place. I've never thought I would say this, but the game is too balanced in a sense: every options boils down to the (more or less) same result.
To contradict myself completely, the Pegasus card ruins the game, because it is WAY overpowered.
So that leaves us with an excellent game, which is too balanced overall, and then one lucky card draw (Pagasus) can win you the game.

Played with 3p total (2p from board game meetup) and won with 2 metropolis while the others were fighting each other. It has quite a bit of player interaction, and the cards that you can purchase are good at being able to level out the game. For example, I had at least 13 coins when one of the players purchased a card that caused me to half (rounded down) and give to him those coins. I didn't mind the auction mechanic, but the fact that I could only take 1 action per turn was annoying and felt like a really slow game. Won't buy, and if given will probably trade. I may play again, but not for some time.

The we played back to back games of Cyclades, first without expansions and then on the new map and the Cyclades: Titans expansion. The game is a lot more fun with the Titan expansion I can tell you. The first game, we were too timid with the bidding for the Gods, but in the 2nd game, we got the hang of it and the bidding was cut-throat and the fighting on the board intense. The team work when someone was ahead was nasty and fun. Loved it.

(The titan expansion bumps this up to 7.5)

Cyclades hits a sweet spot for me. Great interplay of engaging theme and mechanics; fun, meaningful and competitive player interaction; memorable sessions through emergent narrative; excellent balance of skill and luck, with just the right amount of randomness to keep players on their toes at all times.

It's not a perfect game (but then, no game is). Five-player games in particular can involve a late-game kingmaking pile-on and drag on for too long as a result. Sometimes the randomness goes a bit over the top and no amount of skill can help you win when the circumstances simply favor another player too much (mostly through the monster track and battle dice pratfalls).

But none of that really matters. No other game has ever made me feel such joy as my best Cyclades games have, regardless of whether I've won or lost.

Cyclades is currently the best game I own and the only game I've ever played that I can confidently rate a full ten.

Comments:
Cyclades is something like a Game of Thrones light, or at least that is how it feels to me. A Dudes On A Map facade is used to hide a bidding and role selection game that has some really interesting things going on. The game is pretty thematic with players taking on the role of Greek city states fighting for dominance in the region. To win the game players must fight off mythical creatures (a very cool element to the game) and each other to build two Metropolis'. The trick is that you can only do one type of thing each tround because bid on the favor of the gods, and only one god will bless you with the favor each round (i.e. Ares gives you troops, and lets you attack other players). The Gods also let you build one of each of the required buildings you need to build a Metropolis.

Presented with many different paths to victory this game is a mix of Euro and Amerirtrash that pulls off what it sets out to do, and that is simply to be a fun game.

If you aren't having fun when you are playing and get to say "Release the Kraken" then you don't know how to have fun.

Rating respective of the flexibility offered by various expansions, but even the core game is wildly fun and kept me up at night thinking about it when I first played (likely an 8).

Core Game: Turn-order and player-power auction to open every round. Incremental expansion, focus on city-building.

Hades: Incremental expansion with a period brutal war. A second tier of deities and a fleet of heroes add some additional play elements to both broaden the gameplay and soften some of the more unfair surprise win conditions.

Titans: Goes from naval war to land-war with a secondary mechanic to speed troop moving. This is much closer to a Risk variant than to the original thoughtful game, but it's no worse for the transition.

C3K: Crashes game balance by importing the Kemet creatures and giving them balance breaking powers.

Full reviews on each expansion page. My favorite variant is Hades/Titans + Kemet creatures house-ruled to act as normal single-turn creature purchases (which also saves you from needing the miniatures).

Really enjoying this one. A fun, constantly different "guys on a map" game, with "Euro- flavor" that plays in 60-90 minutes and scales well at all player counts.

Due to the Gods, and Mythological creatures, there is a lot of opportunities in this game for sudden large swings. You really need to be paying attention in this game.

Not as much conflict as one would think, in this game. I've played entire games with 5P and seen only 2 battles.

Great components. Semi permanent creatures minis, once painted up, really helps the visual appeal.

Gods, they can be fickle, they can be angry, they can be generous, but most of all, they can be expensive!!!!! Cyclades is a sort of war game in which you try to buy the favor of several costly gods by out bidding your unworthy heathen opponents. If you succeed the gods will reward your patronage with gifts of warriors, ships, philosophers and other goodies. If you fail to outbid your opponents then you'll have to just pray to Apollo who will give you a few bucks and maybe a cornucopia if you're lucky. Then you take your rewards and honor the gods by murdering everyone in sight! Fun! You also get to enlist the aid of several mythological beasts who help you do various things, including helping you murder everyone in sight. Turns out killing in the name of gods is a hell of a lot of fun, now I finally understand the appeal of the crusades! I should also mention that they did a god damned awesome job with the components in this game..superb! And the god bidding is way more fun than I thought. great game, I swear to god(s)

Very simple, yet loaded with subtleties that make the overall experience very rewarding. An excellent gateway to more advanced strategy games due to a combination of very good presentation with solid and straightforward mechanics. Highly recommended for players who want to take a shot at more complicated territory control games, but are afraid of the steep learning curve,

EDIT:

Having played the game a number of times, I reckon that most of the time there is not much going on. It's tough to wage war beause only one player can win Ares/Poseidon at a time, and while war is not the only way to win the game, then again the whole experience seems rather slow-paced and tough to control in the long run. Fun as it is, it doesn't even come close to serious strategy / war games.

EDIT: The expansion alleviates most of the issues I used to have with Cyclades and makes the whole experience deeper and aggressive. A very nice expansion indeed.

I love this game more than Kemet. The board is much nicer and I prefer the 2 pieces for the variable setup for different players.
Auction mechanic is elegenat and awesome and I prefer it over tile buying and worker placement.
Combat is easy and brutal. Monster powers are sweet. Artwork is gorgeous. Theme is deliciously slatehered on and I couldnt help but scream YOU HAVE ANGERED THE GODS!
