Plays well with 2,3 and 4 players.

What's not to love?
Interesting use of dice.
What I like about this game:
- Do you take cards you can easily get out, or try to take cards that may benefit you later, but may take a while to get out?
- Planning ahead; what color dice to pick?
- Lots to manage; the wall, the districts, shipping, dice, prestige points.

Wow, okay, so this is really a bit more brain-bendy than comments led me to believe. Some are complaining that it's luck-driven. This is and it isn't true. What there is, is randomness.

There is randomness in the dice -- but they merely determine how many cubes of certain colors will be available on given turns. And everyone has the same options to select from.

There is randomness in how the cards come out -- but, as with a game like El Grande, you want to try to choose first each round so you can draft the best cards.

So the randomness affects all players equally.

Much is made of the cube selection mechanism, and it is pretty cool. But the most important thing is the card selection. Like many great hand-management games, you need to familiarize yourself with cards to figure out which combinations work best. It's here where the replay value comes in. In fact, I can't imagine properly evaluating this game after one or two plays. But one play was enough for me to determine that I really want to play this more.


UPDATE: Once you get the basic mechanisms down, the strategies begin to emerge.

The more I play this game, the more I find myself looking ahead to the type of office cards that will be coming out on successive turns, which turns they'll be up for grabs, and then using that information to determine which cubes to take in the current round, and when I need to jump ahead on the turn-order track to get what I need when I need it. Yes, there really is an opportunity for planning ahead in this game.

Best Alea Big-Box since Puerto Rico. In fact, this should be top-50 material.

The more I play, the better it gets. Great use of dice to employ an action point allowance system. Players must manage the benefit of getting little cubes early vs. more later. Gaining money is also important in order to gain VPs through the tribute track.

Many interweaving things to consider, and player interaction is mostly focused on who gets what first - whether it be shipping an item, taking a card, or placing an ownership token in the city quarters. Takes about 90-120 minutes to play. There is some slight downtime with reading the text on the cards, but after more games are played the cards become more familiar and 2nd nature.

This is an excellent game with relatively little to complain about. Everything works well. While the gameplay is smooth, the struggle to do what you would like is anything but! There is a noticeable pace to the game. Towards the end there is a "critical mass" buildup with the combinations of cards players accumulate. Some brainburning is involved to decipher the best timing of actions, what resources to get, and the best order to use the activated cards.

Stefan Feld is becoming one of the "sure bets" in boardgame design, and is one I will continue to look out for in the future. Grade: A+

I really enjoyed this one. Like some of Feld's other games, you have to manage something so you don't take negative points. This one you have to manage your cards and getting action cubes for each turn. Easier said than done. Well, if you focus on it, it's not an issue. But it's easy enough to go astray. Lots of different scoring that you need to contend with. I don't think you can let something go and still win. I also enjoyed the mechanic of getting action cubes AND how the cards worked. It added pressure and choices. You can long term plan in this one. Also, you can set yourself up for the big turn, as well. Overall, it was fun, tense and close. I played this with two people.

I liked with four just as much. My new comment:

It's what you can make and plan for out of randomness.

I think that sums it up for me.

April '10 - quickly becoming one of my two or three favorite Alea games. Who am I kidding, this ranks right behind PR for me in Alea games and one of my favorite games at the moment.

November 2011 - A 10. I have now played 19 games of this, mostly 2 player. With playing so many games, I have a great feel on what cards are in the deck and how the cards work together. I try to let the early cards I draw dictate my plan. I have discovered that the four cube single color cards are not difficult to get down...you just have to plan for it down the road. A big key is to grab the joker card for the cube of any color. This way you can just about get any four color cube card down in a reasonable amount of time and cash in the bennies. Both my friend and I leave shipping more towards the end of the game and wall position is key. You do not want to get stuck in last for the whole game. Stay cose so when you decide you need to pick first, you can. Just a ton of stuff to consider. Also, with two, we blaze through a game in about 45 minutes or so. The second 10 I have bestowed on an Alea game.

Typical alea. Thoughful, resource-juggling, largely solitaire. A Delight.

Acquiring the right cards (which to some extent depends on your turn-order position) plus choosing cubes to activate the cards and then exploit the card powers seems key - the equivalent of the game’s economic engine. Maximising the number of times you can use the prestige bar to buy VP is important (and choosing the right turns to forgo the purchase). Buying town tiles and delivering them has always seemed a weaker strategy in our games, but maybe we just haven't seen anyone really go for it in this way yet.

Uprated to 9 after 8 plays (of the German edition). After 9 plays of the German edition I now have an English copy. Uprated to 10 after 24 plays.

My absolute favorite crisis management game. It has many different avenues to collect points with lots of tough, important choices. Do you use your cubes to move you ship closer to a port to deliver your goods, or do you use them to get further along the turn order wall or do you use them to take over a city quarter? Amidst all of these decisions, you have to choose whether you want less cubes now or more cubes later and have to keep your tableau moving as every card you acquire above 5 is -3 points. This may go up to a 10 with additional plays. Excellent depth, controlled chaos, and oodles of fun!

Update following my first 4p game. Wow, I didn't think it could get better, but it did. It is incredible. Macao is just one of those games that I can't get enough of.

Cubes...lots...and lots...of cubes. That's a good thing though. I really like the resource mechanic in this game, where taking more cubes means you get them in a much later round, but you need to make sure you have SOMETHING to use in EVERY round.

Amazingly good game with many games within the game to focus on and the 120+ building people cards and 24 offices create endless ways to play...as good of replayability as I've ever seen.....I've seen people win by playing a low risk/high return of drafting the cheapest cards and I've seen someone win by high-risk/high return taking the more difficult cards and even getting punished for them and still winning...seen a building strategy and shipping strategy and city district strategy all win as well as a balanced strategy, so this trully is a multiple paths to victory game,where others make the claim but do not live up to it, like Macao......the rosewind/dice decisions really are challenging and fun trying to find the right balance between short-term and long-term returns.

Rating should increase with more plays. Still getting a good feel for the game. So far, it seems too rushed and I think it would be a more interactive game with more players competing for ports, city quarters, and wall position.

Tried with 4 and the game didn't feel rushed at all. In fact, it felt quite long (2-2.5 hours). It was still a very fun experience, but now I'd like to try it with 3, to see if that's its sweet spot.

This is becoming my favourite 2 player game. Just the right mix of randomness from the dice and cards (but I wouldn't call it "luck") and some good old fashioned brain burning strategy to make this a fantastic game.
I would say it's best with 2 really since I don't think that competition for ports or city quarters adds much to the game. A few more plays, and this one might become a 10!

Best with 3 because it increases the tension, but doesn't drag too long between turns. Easily one of my favourites and makes me want to try every single Feld design.

Components and artwork are excellent. Theme is good too. Size of box perfect. Mechanics are original and work excellently. Lots of decisions. Planning ahead, having to amend plans according to dice/cards. Some say too much luck - I don't. I agree with the idea that there is randomness which every one has to manage. This randomness does not lead to chaos, but rather I would argue adds to the replayability of the game. A must buy.

Card drafting, racing against the board, pick-up and deliver, turn order manipulation, hardcore cube pushing- it's got everything, and even more surprisingly it works. And in 12 turns, it neither outstays its welcome nor ever allows you to fully do what you want, making it rather addicting.
