One of my favorite themes for a game ever. The theme doesn't usually add or subtract from my enjoyment of a game, but here it definitely enhances it. The gameplay itself is relatively quick and fun, yet still features many interesting decisions typical of good Euros, so you don't have to be a sports fan or even have much knowledge of basketball in order to enjoy the game. I love it!

Theme works well for non-gamers. Plays quickly, can easily knock out 2 in a row. Not a revolutionary auction game, but works very well for what it is--accessible and easy. Some folks may want to play with a house rule variant or two (I'll post our discussion on that shortly).

It's a light bidding game. When thinking about it for a response here, I started to think 'how would I describe it'. Well, an image of Hollywood Blockbuster came to mind. But, it's really not that.

So, it's just 6 rounds (maybe it was 7).

You have a round of bidding for players.

Those players do two things:

Add to the strength of your team and/or
bring money into your team

Each round you you gain trophies based on the strength of your team and then earn income off your team for the following round.

You can only have up to 5 players on your team, so you are looking to 'hire' players that improve your team.

Each player 'changes' their 'strength each year (some getting better as they mature, some losing some of their strength as they age and I think there were a couple that were inconsistent). But, income stays the same.

One neat thing is that there are two injuries 'tiles' that come up. When those go up for bid, it's a fist in blind bid. All bids are spent ('on health care for the team') and the one that spends the least on their team gets an injured player for the year.

On initial play I'd rate it between a 7 and 8. But, I've found myself actively trying to get it to the table. I don't always do that with new games. Also, it does have some of the same feel as HB to me and I've got that rated a 9. So, it will probably be an 8 (maybe a 9).

What may stop it though, at the end of each round there is a 'selection' round for 'specialists' for your team. They aren't equally powerful and the way it works is a bit wonky. I've been meaning the research that and see if it's a translation problem.

Great filler. Fast and smooth, open information. You have to be smart to foresee what will happen in the next season(s) and plan accordingly. Also the bidding is fun.

I'm not much of a basketball fan, but I am otherwise a pretty big sports fan. I wasted two years trying to design a board game GM sim, and my design career improved significantly when I gave up. It was my white whale.

So I was interested when Corné van Moorsel released his own version of a GM sim. True, it was a basketball game and there's no trading between players, but it's otherwise similar to what I wanted.

The game is fantastic! It plays as a light filler auction game, but it has some tough choices. Moorsel simulates each season in a player's career as a bunch of basketballs. No balls is a bad year, and five balls is outstanding. He's printed the entirety of a player's career on each player tile, but it is possible to lose a player to injury (in a Modern Art-esque negative auction), which will negate him for an entire season.

Adding special roles like "Trainer", "Agent", and "Referee" is inspired, because it calls for extra decisions and adds some nice asymmetry to the game.

Fun game of basketball player recruiting as each player owns a competing team and attempts to draft the best through auctions. My sports-oriented boys really got into this one.

I've always wanted to design a team sports general manager's board game that spanned seasons and had players develop, age, and decline but I could never figure out how to get all of the relevant information tracked without becoming ponderous. This game has achieved this in a light, enjoyable format quite impressively.

This game hearkens back to the glorious Euro days of yore, when an auction game can just be an auction game. Surprisingly thematic, tight, quick and rewarding. This is a really lovely system, and honestly I think that it is the biggest surprise hit of the year.

Rating may go up with more plays.

Very clever game that does a good job of taking a sports theme and applying abstract mechanics.

This is a great auction game. A lot of nice mechanisms. It is not a light game. Buy only if you like heavier games. It is not a family game.
