An enjoyable break from the more intensive tactical systems out there. A good "beer & pretzels" game system that is very playable yet mildly keeps the flavor of other more advanced American Civil War games that are out there. Simple and fun.

Nice game quad. It clearly shows its age, but some of the battles included are interesting and almost forgotten (like Mine Run and brandy station). Today It has been superceeded by other games, but it has still some potential left.

Definately worth while. Not going to blow a gasket thinking about what you're doing or about all the detailed comand rules you have to deal with like in a lot of the games now. A pleasant break. Almost beer and pretzel time. Nice value too. A lot of gaming packed into that one skinny little box. GMT's boxes are still too tall for some of my selves though!

We played the game very seriously ...without the errata and we had the strong feeling to loose our time.
Now,considering the system which in theory is a more advanced system than the blue & grey system ,we should give a second try.

1863 is a good collection of Civil War battles. The advantage to this kind of package is only one system of rules to know and familiar components. The disadvantage is missing detail one might find in a game dedicated to one battle.

Not a bad game at all, but has been superseded by the Glory series of games from GMT. I'll continue to play it, however ... at least until there's a Glory game on Gettysburg!

I'm a big Richard Berg fan, but this isn't one of his best. It's OK, not great. Kind of generic, not a lot of play variety.

A very simple game. Not a bad system, but there are better. Good for fun, but not really a challenge.

One of the first wargames I had back when I was 12... At the time it was the best I had. But in comparison with other systems out there (don't even have to go outside of GMT), this doesn't match up. There are several decent ideas within the system, but as a whole it doesn't mesh as well as it needs to.

One solo play back in the 90's. A thorough treatment considering 4 scenarios are included. Worthwhile if you are willing to sit through a play session.

Same issues as 1862. See my notes for that game for details, but in brief - we found the activation rules so ridden with ambiguity and unanswered questions as to make the game unplayable.

This game gets a 5 instead of a 4 (which was my score 1862) because the components are much nicer, especially the maps.

First wargame I ever played. Bought as present for me as I was big into Ken Burn's ACW documentary at the time. Played a lot. Still have. The Gettysburg game is ok. The rest are very so-so.

Edit - dumped as it was very much the worse for wear.

Too many different series on the American Civil War already. I do not know how GMT position this series in the market as compared to the already entrenched GBACW and GCACW. There are also their own gameplayer series and Glory series as well. This B&L series is actually one continuing from the SDI. It is a combination of the old feeling of SPI "Blue and Gray" and GMT's own "Glory" in which operational-tactical level mechanics is emphasised.

Another game I've never played yet. So I won't rate it.
Four Civil War battles in one box. Each game has a colorful map that's pleasing to look at. Only 100 counters per game, and some of them are not combat units. I wish GMT had used Nato symbols. But they are not that bad to look at.
It's clear that these games are designed to set up and play fast. Now if I can just find the time and an opponent!
