I dislike games that paste a theme onto existing games, and was afraid this would be Yathzee in disguise. I couldn't have been more wrong! This is a quick game of ridiculous face stomping, energy gathering and getting points. Turns go fast, and the upgrade cards add a great diversity to the game.
Great filler game!

I don't mind throwing in some variants like:
1) Start with 10 points and 8 health
2) If you claw, you must enter Tokyo
3) Everyone drafts/draws a power to start; start with 4 energy

This has been how we start each game night for the past several months. It is quick and fun. It gets dice rolling rip roaring entertainment. Taunting between opponents team ups and backstabs. It is one of the best games that exists.

Really fun, and though it's simple there are a lot of interesting ways that it can play out.

Oozes fun and is very easy to teach and enjoy. The cards are great fun and give each player (that is, monster) his/her own personality. It plays well with a wide range of players.

Now to nitpick a little: the insert isn't particularly functional. Once I added the promo cards and expansions, which I recommend everyone do, I tossed said insert. The quality of the components (the dice in particular) should have been higher. Be aware I own a first edition. I believe the components were better in subsequent printings.

This is an early rating of 10, however in just a few sessions I have played this game nearly 10 times. And I am amazed at how good this game is. You have to understand what type of game you are going to play if you want to judge it correctly, however just look at the components and you should have a good idea.
If you try and turn this into a number game and strategicaly plan out each move to get the most points, then you are completely misssing the boat. It's a monster mash game, with hidden depth but simple enough to play with the kids and just have fun.

Played 4 times since Saturday, lots of fun. The rules are short but well written. To us there weren't much ambiguities. From all the games I bought this year a definite keeper.

I really enjoy push-your-luck dice games and you couldn't have a better theme on top of such a mechanism, King of Tokyo is a match made in heaven!

The game looks fantastic. The humor of the cards and characters is well done and very evocative and funny. This is a great game, especially if you have a sense of humor and don't mind player elimination.

After 10 plays with everything for 3-6 players, I must increase my rating to "10", this is an excellent game and one I'm likely never to tire of, especially with promised expansion due out before long. This has already become a favorite opener, closer and filler in my gaming group, and we even love an entire evening playing nothing but this game.

King of Tokyo is a light, beer-and-pretzels style game with a quick playing time and a healthy dose of luck. It also scales wonderfully from 2-6 players, though I think it's just plain more fun with more monsters - ah, I mean, players.

The premise of the game is basically the same as Monsters Menace America. That is to say, it's not JUST Godzilla or King Kong, it's ALL THE MONSTERS and they are going to kill each other, not just the planet. The cardboard stand-ups of the monsters are high-quality and have great cartoony illustrations. It has a bunch of custom dice and some special power cards which are really what make the game shine.

Just as in Yahtzee or Roll Through the Ages, you take a fistful of dice and get three rolls, keeping whatever you want from the previous roll and re-rolling the rest. The goal is to either kill all the other monsters or get 20 points. The dice have various combinations that get you points, healing, attacks on other monsters or energy. Energy is the currency of the game and is used to buy special cards.

As you would expect from Richard Garfield, these cards all break the game in various ways, changing the rules just for your monster so he has a leg up on the other critters. There are tons of these cards; it will probably take 4-5 games (depending on the number of players) to see them all, even if you set aside the ones you already used.

If I had to describe this game in one word it would be "addicting". I can't think of another game that creates more of a feeling of "just one more game" than this one.
