Completely customizable addition to a great game. Players can use specific cards and eliminate those they feel don't mesh with their particular group, or use all of them for some added spice to the game. Each event is forecasted 1 turn in advance giving players the opportunity to make new strategic choices in an effort to channel the events in their favor.

Will always play this expansion when playing SW. Especially for 2 players. The artwork is superb. Would love to own the originals. The humour is excellent too. The variations suggested in the pack just add to it. I think this is my favourite pack of cards ever!

To me, this is a surprise package! It changes the game almost completely and instantly turn the game into chaos, but not without fun and excitement! I find the orginal Small World board game to be fun to play with but a little too predictable after some plays. This expansion completely changes the game into high tension and more strategic than ever. If u like a game that has variability everytime u play it, and gives u surprises even after 20 or 40 plays, this is the one expansion to add. The only thing i may not like is it may make the game play longer. Otherwise, it's an essential addition.

I love all the Small World expansions that have come out up until now, but I have to say that the only one that adds the most variance in the game would have to be Small World Tales and Legends. This expansion offers not only extra powers but also a bidding action (on some cards) which, to me, is one of the best gameplay mechanics in any game! I dont think I ever want to play the base game without it.

The event cards bring a nice bit of strategic variety into the game. The fact that you can see the upcoming event and prepare for it makes this expansion a great addition instead of an unnecessary irritation. ;-)

I really, REALLY like this expansion... it adds a lot without adding anything.

I feared the randomness would break the game, but in fact it doesn't. You can anticipate what is going to happen in the next turn... that's "contained randomness".

Excellent expansion - the variety of cards allows you to choose how much you want it to affect the base game. Use the 'Upcoming' event mechanic to adjust your strategy according to what event is about to befall all the players next turn. Must-have for all SW fans.

I was quite surprised with this extension, it doesn't bring randomness to the game but really adds strategic depth as events are known one tune ahead and many of them are based on players' auctions. A great addition mostly for strategic gameplay oriented players.

What a great idea! A few thoughts
- Makes the game remind me of Chaos in the Old World
- I love the "themed sets"
- How is it possible to play with visible upcoming event? It is so much more fun to play with cards closed and pray for something like "all ratmen are now destroyed. Goodbye, ratmen"
All in all, a very good expansion.

Simply put, Tales and Legends is the best Small World expansion: by changing conditions each turn - and often impacting heavily on the game - it forces players to check and adapt their strategy over and over, which results in better games. (May 2012)

Update - After further playing Tales and Legends, in March 2014 I raised my rating from 7.5 to 9, the same as Small World.

This is my favorite of the Small World expansions, even though it doesn't add any new races or powers. The global effect cards make the game much more interesting, and they add a great deal of variety. I wouldn't play without these unless I was teaching people new to the game.

When I first learned about this expansion was I wasn't interested. It seemed gimmicky and would add too much "luck" to the game that is otherwise mainly strategy. BUT this expansion is FANTASTIC. I won't play without it. The deck can be adjusted so that it can add subtle or major game changers. It forces players to adapt on the fly and, because the cards are queued, you know what to expect in the next round and can adjust strategy accordingly. In essence it can make for a more strategic game. The cards add a ton of dynamic play, and the games are even more variable and way more exciting. If you want more luck element sometime we will blindly draw from the top of the deck... its great. Its also more fun for people who need/want a little bit of luck mixed into their strategy games. IMHO it is the best expansion for the game to date.

Tales and Legends is the result of a design contest run by Days of Wonder: Laurent Verrier created it with help from the game's designer, Philippe Keyaerts. And this resulted in an expansion that's very unique in the Small World stable.

Instead of adding tokens with new races and special powers, Tales and Legends adds a deck of 54 Event Cards. Players will create an Event Deck of X-1 cards (X representing the number of game turns). These are shuffled and put next to the board, face-up.
The rules provide different ways to decide which cards make up the Event Deck:
- The basic rules make you shuffle all 54 cards into one large stack and pick X-1 cards randomly.
- A more advanced variant makes use of the symbols printed in the top-left corner of each card, so players can customize the way the cards will impact their game. The symbols divide the cards into six themed categories. Each card also shows a second symbol to denote how large of an impact that card has on the game.

There's two categories of Events: Current and Upcoming. At the start of the second turn, the top card of the deck will become the Current event. This means its special rule takes effect for all players. These special rules can vary greatly: some are simply Powers from the base game or expansions that get applied to all active races (e.g. The Great Catapult, which functions like the Catapult power from Be Not Afraid...), others are global catastrophies that hit te world itself (e.g. Famine for which all races lose race tokens, but which can be minimized by occupying Farmland). This also reveals a new card on top of the deck, which is the Upcoming Event. That means players know which Event they'll have to deal with during their next turn, and can - possibly - plan ahead.

Herein lies Tales and Legends' greatest strength. The other expansions for Small Word mostly add more variety in races and powers, but don't really change the way you approach the game. Tales and Legends adds an extra layer of decision making to Small World. You're not only strategizing about the best use of your race, the right time to go into Decline and what race to pick next. You're also trying to deal with the upcoming Event Cards and how to best use them to your advantage (or minimize their disadvantage).
And, from a non-gameplay-related standpoint, this expansion also adds to the storytelling aspect of the game. I have always liked recounting the rise and fall of the different races and their struggle for Small World. Tales and Legends does truly add legends to your tales: you'll no longer merely talk about how your Mounted Orcs destroyed your cousin's Hill Humans, you'll tell the tale of the year the Hill Humans were weakened by the Great Famine and unable to withstand the onslaught of the Mounted Orcs.

I'd recommend this expansion when you want to add more variety to Small World's gameplay beyond adding new races and powers.
