Yes i know the designer, but we finns tend to disregard that and just concentrate on the product.(I mean: Ya, he is a great guy but if he does a shitty game i have no problem in rating it a 1.)

If you liked Master of Orion you will definitely like this game. I've played the prototype now twice and it is really solid. Definitely one of the best heavier galactic games I've played and the game isn't even ready yet.

Edit:

I've now played the printed version of the game and I'm still as impressed as I was when I first laid my eyes on the game. Eclipse is a embodiment of euro mechanics, theme and dice rolling a la wargames. It's compact, fluent, gorgeous and epic and takes 30 minutes per player as promised. Only con I can think of the game is that I don't at the moment have enough time to play games and thus it's not going to hit the table often enough (and that they don't yet provide a collectors edition of the game).

A masterpiece. Clever mechanisms interact beautifully to provide plenty of consequential, thematic decisions with a minimum of downtime and fiddliness. People have quested for years to produce "TwiLite" -- Touko Tahkokallio has scored a bull's-eye. The components are well-done and the rules clearly written and organized.

I've had the privilege and pleasure of being involved in the playtesting of the prototype since May 2010 and saw it evolve. The game I played back then was great.. the finished game is phenomenal!

The game is truly an epic 4X civilization-building game, but it doesn't take all day to play. It is built upon very intuitive mechanics that allow you to play the game, not the system. It is in essence very much a eurogame with loads and loads of highly immersive theme seamlessly integrated into the package.

The gameplay is so exciting it keeps you at the edge of your seat, but the balance between strategy and luck feels good (by playing smart, luck is very manageable).

First rating after first (early prototype) playtest games: _8.5_ - May 2010

Improved rating after several (developed prototype) playtest games: __9__ - November 2010

Improved rating after more (late prototype) playtest games: _9.5_ - March 2011

May 2011 Update: The finished game and components design is simply exceptional. If the production value is right, I fully expect to give this game full marks.

Rating after playing the the final (pre)production copy: __10__ - The quality of game components is as high as the ambitious design deserves. The game looks gorgeous and plays like a dream. I'm pretty sure this will become my favourite board game of all time.

UPDATE: I'm finding some people's complaints about "luck" more and more ridiculous. They're only indicative of their own inexperience and inability to play the game well. The rules are deceptively easy to grasp but true understanding of different strategies and how to play the game competitively might take a lot more effort. Apparently some people never get it.

I just played a game (including the expansion in playtesting) where 6 out of my 7 explores where ancients, including my first four hex pulls and I was sitting next to Draco. I ended up discarding two hexes over the course of the game and even the only one without an ancient had a Warp gate. Sounds bad? I was "screwed by luck"? You know what happened? I won by a landslide, because I adapted to the situation and chose my strategy accordingly.

The game has several random elements to ensure replayability and excitement, but calling it "luck-based" is a load of bull****.

La expansión Rise of the Ancients mejora el juego añadiendo nuevas razas, tecnologías. Especialmente interesante el hecho de meter cosas para rebajar el poder de los misiles y la introducción de los agujeros de gusano

Las losetas de supernova y de sistema con acción molan bastante.

Likes: An epic space game that is very streamlined. The rules and game play are intuitive. The different powers also feel very different. My absolute favorite thing about this game is probably the ability to customize your ship classes.

Dislikes: It may seem like a lot for new players at first. There is dice for combat, but this is easily "avoided" with targeting computers.

This game is harder to find time to play than much of my collection, yet I've managed to play it quite a few times. This is one of those rare games where I appreciate just about everything in the game. Many other games just have that one or 2 things that bother you, whether it's the graphic design or one of the game mechanisms. Eclipse seems to get it just right on all fronts. It's clear a lot of love, time, and effort was put into the design, playtesting, and production. One of the things I appreciate the most is how intuitive the mechanics are. The rules are quite streamlined, and it is very easy to teach. And ship customization is really fun.

The only (very minor) downsides:
- It seems better with more players, but the play length can push the limits a bit. With the wrong set of gamers (AP or just chatty), a game with 4-6 players can get dragged out a bit. The estimated game time of 30/player assumes fast and focused play from all.
- I don't think Plasma Missiles are unfairly powerful like some others do, but I do think that with multiple plasma missiles in a ship build, the number of dice you end up throwing gets a bit ridiculous. I don't think it's overpowered, but it just seems a bit silly in comparison to the maturity of the rest of the design. I sometimes wonder if it would have been better to give them an energy cost of 1. But on the other hand this may have reduced some of the exciting moments of the game.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what they add in with the expansion.

Finally a 4X game that delivers. There's exploration, expansion, tech development and improvements of ships and there's warfare and diplomacy. The fact that it's playable in an evening and still manages to scratch that build your space empire itch is amazing.

I can't praise this game enough. Everything fits together in a simple yet elegant way. Everything is so clear and logical too. I'm impressed in a way I didn't think possible any more for a jaded player like myself.

Only played with terrans and only one play which is why it only gets a 9 for now. More plays will probably up this to a 10 as I try out aliens and different strategies.

Update: Tried aliens, fun with diversity. Rating up to 10.

[6/29/13] Initial rating after 2 training games. Awesome, breathtaking mechanics. Can't wait to try again.
[7/2013] Update. Played 6p with all Terran, took 7 hours. I came in 2nd (30 points). 3 new players, 3 returning. Time will come down I think, can't wait to try again.
[4/13] 10. Awesome, want to play this all the time.
[7/14] Been playing the iOS app extensively the last year with ftf game time very limited these days. Played a ftf 5p on 7/4, my 7th play (6th play was abandoned about half way through). I love how this game has a "bungie-cord" effect, where when you stretch your empire out, the limits on resources force you to make decisions about what you want to keep. Also, combat has a decreasing value over time due to limits on VP chit space and values, allowing different strategies to flourish at different points in the game. Expansion is fantastic, as just a handful of Rare techs cans be used to counter missiles, but not nerf the missile player entirely. Love the neutron-bomb negater.

Best 4x game out there. A good mix of Euro and Ameritrash mechanics. Plays in a reasonable amount of time (Sorry, TI:3). This is not TI:3 light, but scratches the same itch, and you do not have to put aside a whole day to get a game on.

Scratches every itch --- Euro, Space, Combat, Customization, Reasonable play time! Best game I've played so far.

Eclipse is a game where group thinking will seriously affect the outcome. You can see this when you read all the threads and rating comments where people claim that one strategy is overpowered. However, for some reason the strategy mentioned is always a different one.

Enjoyable experience, basically condenses the whole space operaish theme into a neat ~3 hour package instead of the more usual 12 hours or so. A lot of fancy mechanics that work well together. Visually really pleasing and all relevant information is provided on the board.

A space theme euro game with combat: A good combination for me. I never could get into TI3 due to the shear length of this acclaimed epic game. So this 1 is a very good alternative. There is resource management, technologies, space combat and to some extend diplomacy and table talk. A good balance of strong mechanics. I love it.

It kind of, in a strange way, reminded me of Merchants & Marauders x10 with much more going on and much less down-time. WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!

Perfect 4x game. So much bang for your buck. Simple and clean with lots of fun choices. It screams along at a choppy pace, and has you engaged the whole time.

The alien races are really fun.

My only complaint about the game is the inclusion of the 4 tiles in the bag for fighting. Because there are 1 tiles and the 4s are four times worth the result for the same amount of effort, the result is extreme (better than taking the main homeworld). That mean that someone could easily get lucky and draw the three fours which is as much as almost maxing out on all the tech trees. and often more than anything you actually do on the board. So I just took mine out and left them in the box.

Space opera/Empire management 4X game or Masters of Orion, the boardgame.

I think there are several good things happening here. The resource management is clever and streamlined so the game doesn't feel fiddly. Combat is quick and filled with drama, like it should, and very well integrated with the ship design.

There's enough variability to keep each game unique, the alien races introduce some flavour and they seem fairly balanced.

Luck is present in reasonable doses but good play usually overcomes bad luck.

Eclipe feels epic, like a good space opera 4X empire management game should feel and yet it still manages to play in a very reasonable amount of time. A 4 player game usually take us two and a half hours.

I think this may very well be the long sought after Holy Graal of the genre. Great work, formerly unknown finnish designers!

Eclipse is very nearly the perfect game as far as I am concerned. It has just the right amount of luck and depth combined with extremely intuitive rules. It also supports a variety of player counts (all of them well too) and plays in a reasonable time. The components are very high quality and the game looks pleasing on the table. Based on my plays, all worries about plasma missiles, bankruptcy and exploration draws have been proven wrong. I strongly believe that while there is some luck in Eclipse there are also enough ways to mitigate the effects. Bankruptcy is a viable tactic that can be used but is usually not worth it. Plasma missiles require different tactics to be used against but are by no means a huge game changer.

Eclipse works brilliantly and all the information you need is on the board and in the hexes. Quality of the pieces is good and the rulebook is understandable and well written. The time needed to play one game through is enough to make it feel epic and short enough to not feel like your dragging through it.

There is some luck but it's very manageable with the right choices. All the details and intuitive play just makes this game one of my favorites.

This one does indeed play more smoothly (and quickly) than comparable games, while still providing a suitably "epic" experience.

Received a hansome sum as a Christmas present from Gwen's parents for Christmas 2012 and turned part of it into Eclipse! Thanks G&G!

This is the epic space game for me! There is enough empire management for us Euro-philes and the quick pace and limited expansion of the board make for some tense combats along the way. It scales well and plays surprisingly quickly. I think I'm just going to like this more and more as I get a chance for more plays.
