A racing game that rewards good planning and provides a lot of tension on nearly every turn. Good player interaction with opportunities to screw your neighbor. When planning your move, it's essential to analyze your opponents' positions as well to see if they'll be able to foil your plans, and so you can ruin their big move! Great theme and the simple mechanics work very well together.

Rating based on a late version of a prototype.

Great thematic racing game (helps that I live in Portland) with tough choices and plenty of tension. Comments based on high-fi prototype - can't wait to try the production version.

Unique racing style game that really seems cool since I live outside of Portland, OR. I've only played prototypes to date but I'm looking forward to trying the finished product. Full disclosure - I know Carey as he's also a local Portland guy.

Clever and engaging route-planning mechanics with an appealing Portland bridge theme. Especially nice use of multiple modes of transportation which each alter your strategy. Fun!

A great game with simple rules and deep planning. It has a unigue use of an action rondel. Each move you use 3 different modes of transport but you have to time your bridge crossings to have the right mode for the bridge you're crossing.

I'm a friend of Carey's and live in Portland. I played an early prototype. The game is pretty thematic. Portland has a lot of bridges and means of transportation. It's been a couple of years since I've played, but I remember it being a bit of a puzzler.

Good family type game that even offers enough challenge to satisfy gamers who enjoy games which involve logistics and puzzling out an optimal route, with a high degree of interaction in the process. Decent theme, and different enough from usual euro games to make this worth playing. Impossible to play if color-blind.
Designer's variant: for games with 3-4 players, consider doing 6 instead of 5 rounds, to give players a chance to cross all 8 bridges.
See my comprehensive pictorial review: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/597637

Status: Being enjoyed by a family that loves games but only had Uno, Phase 10, etc.

An obligatory purchase living in the Bridgetown area. The game itself is fun but I to critical to time your special actions. Abstract play.

Somewhat problematic without variants. The first 5 or 6 flags are easy to get, the rest nearly impossible. The last few rounds are mostly played to stop other players from gaining any ground. Kind of petered out the fun.

You can play with some variants (from the author) or with different scoring for each flag.

Our four players unanimously agreed that this game should not have "Races" in its title. "Bridgetown Routes and Colors Puzzle" would be a better description, and just plain "Bridgetown" would be a better name. They don't call it "Elfenland Races."

Somewhat too calculable gameplay and there aren't many elements in the game to keep you interested for a longer time. Player interaction was kinda fun and the playing time was quite short. The gameplay is a bit too hard for young children but there is very little to interest more experienced gamers, even as a filler.

Urban Transportation Capture the Flag.
Fun action selection game. Open information with players watching each other select various actions, and then executre them in variable order. 2 player is fun, 3 a bit better, then 4 player adds too much chaos [unless you like your bridge crossings chaotic].

An interesting race around Portland on various forms of transportation, crossing bridges and collecting flags. A lack of a catchup mechanism can hurt players in the last round - if you know you're behind, you probably won't win. Still, fun with the right crew.

My assessment of the game is mixed. I appreciate the theme and original mechanisms, and enjoy the thinking involved in attempting to plan a successful route. Unfortunately, there are numerous factors beyond a player's control -- or even ability to assess -- that can easily thwart a player's plans. So, careful planning not only can take a long time, but it can ultimately prove fruitless.

Depending upon the players involved, the game can play quickly or take longer than it should. The race is usually close, but too often ends in a tie. For me, the balance is about even regarding plusses and minuses. The end result is a game that, while intriguing with some clever attributes, has several areas of concern. Whether these concerns outweigh the game's positive aspects will certainly be a matter of personal preference. For me, it relegates the game into an already crowded field: the "middle of the pack". In a world with so many games, that is not a good place to be.

I think it would be better if it represented Portland more - apart from the river and the bridges, there is nothing Portland-y about it. Not a single recognizable building.

Pretty boring for a 2 player game.
With more, the game can get pretty nasty, AP prone and not too fun depending on who you're playing with.
This one sits in a weird place.

I picked this up hoping for a cute, light racing game. Unfortunately, it ends up being a light game that's also a massive brain-burner. How do those things go together? The advance planning of each round, with the restrictions on options and routes, is a massive brain-burn. But then the actions of other players tend to render that planning null and void by the late parts of the round, with little room for predictability (thus the lightness), while injecting sequential brain-burning while you try to salvage your turn (at least the first instance is simultaneous). For all that staring and planning and calculating and re-planning, the outcome still feels pretty arbitrary.

Also, all the bright colors for bridge flags means that the player pieces are ugly and drab to avoid confusion. It's understandable, but it's still ugly and drab.

There's more strategy here than meets the eye, but the game is just kind of dull. Components are good, although the board was smaller than I thought it would be. The game is different, nothing out there like it as far as I have seen. Maybe a bigger board with more bridges would help. Nothing exciting here.

I am a little disappointed with this game. Played with two players, and it was not that great. With two the game was mostly multiplayer solitaire until someone used the swap to screw someone over, then it just got unsatisfyingly mean. I would be willing to play again with four to see how that goes.

Bridgetown Races is a spatial programming game. Three moves are set-up each round along narrowly defined routes. With almost no ability to compensate if an opponent interferes on the earlier moves, this is a frustrating title.
