Explosive laden Mules? Who wouldn't want to see THAT! Great game of the GBACW type on this little known Battle in New Mexico during the American Civil War.

The battle on which the battle scene in the "Good the Bad and the Ugly" was loosely based. No exploding mules in the movie, but they are here in the game.

Actually not as bad as I'd feared. I think the TCT too unwieldy and the same effect may have been achieved more simply by a chit pull. I also wonder whether the victory conditions are askew. The Fderals will almost certainly cross the Rio in strength, and once over the burden of attack will fall almost entirely on the Confederates. In the actual battle, the initial Confederate attacks were launched to spoil a Federal attack.
The situaltion is interesting though and the scale of the action means that the really-ultra-fiddly-and-poorly-explained rules don't feel so burdensome in this setting.

There is much to be loved in this game. Fight, morale and command rules work fine, with a fine dose of chrome ; the map is very good ; the situation is interesting and promises much replayability. There is much fight and action. The CSA can't really win as far as I can see, but just playing the game is fun...
The rules are rather on the heavy side - for a magazine game, and are sometimes a bit confusing (you'll need the 4 pages errata for this game !). You'll need too to scan and print about 100 (!) more markers than what is provided to play the game in a comfortable way. Yet, as long as the game is good and fun, why not ?
But the true low point of the game is the activation system which seems clearly unfinished and bugged. It creates unrealistic and frustrating situations, especially during the end of the turns. It makes the game last much too long for what it is too (8 hours is a minimum as far as my experiences are concerned). Too bad, with a more streamlined and classical system, it could have been a great tactical game !
