A lot of get-the-leader and screw-thy-neighbor possibilities during game play. Better than the typical 'family game' but not quite as clever as the 'Euros'. Can start pretty slowly but end rather fast too.

A blast to play but very luck-driven. The last several games of this I've played have involved one player getting a lucky income boost early, then sweeping the board with a fortunate series of die rolls. Fun indeed, especially when that player's me, but anticlimactic.

If income were determined in some balanced and consistent manner, the fare wars randomness would approach an appropriate level.

I'd love to see a better economic game with an airline theme - it might be possible to adapt the 18XX system to handle it, for example.

Enjoyed my first game of Air Baron. Looking into getting my own copy.

I played it for the first time at the Granby 2008 meeting. Another great Avalon Hill game in my opinion. Like any Avalon Hill, Air Baron can take a couple of hours to play.

Basically Air Baron is the conquest of the US with economic twists. It's worth looking into. The mechanics of the game is very interesting. Are you at peace or at war during your turn? Which city(cities) are you going to try and take over? Is there going to be a disaster during the turn? If so, at what cost and who will profit the most? Lots can happen during a round of play. It ain't over till it's over. Anyone can win.

As I recall, I didn't finish the game since I went bankrupt. The other players finished the game without me. Looking forward to play this again sometime. Although I know only one person who owns this game. So until I see him again...or get my own copy.

A fun and simple game that can also be a bit frustrating, as dice are used to determine some events. The map can be configured from 2 - 6 players.

A great gem of a game and one Avalon Hill's last but good ones before going under. My entire family loves this game and it always seems to have the right amount of aggressiveness for my war-game friends yet the theme of building an Air empire monopoly is harmless enough to get the females to the table. I highly recommend.

Thoughts after first play: An old classic, feels somewhat like Merchant of Venus to me even though the game play is not at all similar. Fiddly, but I don't mind. Played it yesterday for the first time and dreamt about it all last night -- a definite keeper! (Rating 8) Thoughts after second play: Still interesting, but luck plays too strong a role for my taste. Winner of our game went from about 160 to enough market share to win as the result of one turn with about 10 successful takeovers. I'll still play it every once in a while, but I don't think I need to own it. (Rating 6.5) Third play reinforces opinion after second play.

Finally had a chance to play this after wanting to for a very long time. I even had my own copy at one time but never played it and ended up trading it away. It may be a little too long for what it is but it was pretty enjoyable and we laughed a lot, mostly at how bad I was doing. I ended up trading for this again and we anticipate playing it again soon.

Very random, but still a lot of fun and you do feel like you have some control over events. Feels a lot like an economic version of Risk. If you want a euro game with some direct confrontation, you could easily do a lot worse than this.

A fun game of cut-throat airline competition. I've had a few games degenerate into standoffs between two powerful players until someone gets a bit of luck drawing chips which allows them to go on an agressive expansion spree to win the game. There's more luck involved than is initially apparent.

There is a lot af luck involved with this game. You had better hope that your routes are picked out of the cup or else you will get NOTHING!
Still the game has some merit and once in a while a luck dependent game makes you appreciate more skill dependent games

I've been on this site for 10 years now, and I'm far from sick of games, but I think I am, to some degree, sick of learning too many new games. I'm also tired of playing 4+ hr multiplayer games, but I'll still happily play really long games 2 player.

Unless you're one of those gamers that can't stand it when a roll of the dice or a random chit draw interferes with your ability to demonstrate how intellectually superior you are to other players, Air Baron is a very fun economic/wargame hybrid full of some pretty wild swings of fortune and risky gambles. The only problem I really have with it is that it can be repetitious if players take too long. Keep it light and play quickly, and it can be a blast. Deserves a better reputation than it seems to have, although it does seem a little antiquated at this point.

Interesting game of controlling air routes and major airports. Once all the routes have been purchased, it turns into a war game with a different theme. Players roll dice against each other for control of various routes. Various modifiers come into play. The first player to control enough airport hubs wins.

I wish someone would issue a streamlined update of Air Baron. There's some great stuff here, but the game's too repetitive, too random, and a little awkward in parts. It's either too luck-based for a game of its length or too long for a game with this amount of luck.

Good Avalon Hill game, midway between the klunky overly simulated games of yore and the more streamlined Euros that came later. This is closer to a Euro, but is perhaps a bit too long.

Game can veer between very fun to frustrating based on a lot of randomness, particularly what happens in fare wars.

I enjoyed it - but not my family. Seems like a financial wargame. I liked the transition from growth phase where you are trying to build up your warchest and acquire open areas to the conflict phase where you try to take away others locations.
Scales well since with few players part of the map is out of play.
