Came out the same year as El Grande and seems like a last-gasp effort by AH to produce a playable game by adopting a few euroy mechanics (variable turn order, limiting player options to keep turns short, etc). But it still feels like an old-school AH wargame with its die-rolls, modifiers for controlling adjacent hubs, and devastating event chits.

Surprisingly decent game. I wasn't expecting much given that it is an Avalon Hill game from right before they went bankrupt. Interesting tension between taking the safe but slow expansion route or gambling on hostile takovers; of course towards the end you have no choice but to conduct takeovers to win. What keeps it from being more than just "decent" for me is the amount of luck in the income phase. If one player lucks into several turns where they get substantially more income than the other players (because their chits are drawn), they can pull away and it becomes very difficult to catch them without a combined, concerted effort by all the other players and that just makes the game drag on way too long and sucks all the fun out of it. When the income draws are evenly distributed though, the game can be very tense and entertaining. Unfortunately, it seems like the distribution gets skewed more often than not. So, it's merely "OK" for me: I'll play it if someone really wants to, but I won't suggest it myself and I see no reason to keep it in my collection.

This game has a lot of luck, kingmaking can play an awful big part in deciding the game but still I see the potential for it to be great with the right group. My group wasn't right as one player was heavy into revenge as a guiding motive sucking the fun out of it. All in all this game can be anything between extremely annoying (2/10) and very good (8/10).

An older AH economic wargame hybrid that rewards aggressive play. Probably not for those sensitive to "rich get richer", unlucky tile draw, or elongated game duration issues.

It's funny how a game less than 15 years old can look and feel so dated. Dealing with player elimination, ganging up on the leader, big amounts of luck, etc. after several years of more modern games is like a splash of cold water - surprising and a little refreshing.

I'd like to play it every once in a while for a change of pace, but I find modern games and older classics richer and more rewarding.

I usually pitch this as "Monopoly, but good" or "Monopoly with an ending". It usually holds to that, but a series of defender-heavy dice rolls can occasionally just drag a game to a ponderous halt.

Also, I recommend using most of the edge case rules (Jumbos, SSTs, etc) as optional rules; the game works just fine stripped down to basic airport purchasing and takeovers. Loans, however, need to be kept in. They're critical to mitigating lopsided chit draws early.

This game feels a lot like Power Grid to me, but more luck-based. I don't really like that you only get paid when the chits are randomly drawn from the cup. And I don't like that someone can just crush everyone else in the game through no special skill of their own. A first-time player has as much chance of winning as anyone, and that bugs me a little in what feels like it should be a skill-based game.

This is a fun game. But there is sooooo much randomness that two players could (and typically do) have identical strategies...one player is highly successful whereas the other is completely unsuccessful. Thus, the game plays out to its conclusion despite the strategy you employ, not because of it.

far too much randomness for my current tastes (11/11) and the ever increasing number of chits in the cup make the game seem to drag as luck comes home to roost...strategy died along with my interest as 3 of 5 players were passivly watching the other 2 get endless draws while we starved.

Blech.

My first and only play of this lasted nearly 4 hours. The other players, for whom the game is a long-time favorite, assured me that this was a fluke, but knowing that the possibility is there makes me wary of playing again. Still, I enjoyed the game -- lots of old-school charm, direct confrontation, and a heavy push-your-luck element.

Avalon Hill. Decent abstracted modern passenger airlines game of market share domination through control of airports and the gates at those airports. This multi-player game can be fun to play with the right crowd. It is a gamer's game with dice. Air Baron is playable in an evening.

Interesting game even though you're more or less at the mercy of the dice. I'm hoping for more of an economic game than an area control game when playing something about airlines though. This game can run long especially with larger number of players due to leader bashing.

Played once in a pick-up game with some guys at a game shop. I had fun, but I'm not sure that this game is worth revisiting. There are ways to improve one's chances, but the out come feels a bit to influenced by luck. It also feels like it could generally run longer than I will usually prefer.

A fun game. Always play with advanced rules, as the basic game feels like a very random version of Monopoly. There is still a large portion of "luck of the draw" with chit-pulls and luck from the dice driven takeovers.

Fun concept and some good ideas here, but it's all very random. You need to go into the game with that mindest...plus be prepared to spend at least 2 hours in a luckfest, with little reward for good strategy. Despite the sound of that comment, I enjoy the game and would not object to playing it once in a while. Just not too often.

Wow, what a brutal experience. There is so much randomness to this game that solid play just can't account for it all. Let's see here: random payoff draws can feed your stiffest competitor while you starve. You can enter "fare wars" (thus forfeiting your opportunity to earn money) and then get worked over by a randomly-determined turn order. You can achieve dominance of a hub, only to see it vanish quickly in a roll of the dice.

Jumbo jets can be purchased to double the payoffs for specific routes. However, you're more likely to place them on the cheapest (and therefore most vulnerable) routes that you own, to protect them from takeovers. Losing a route can cause you to lose dominance or even control of a hub (most or all of its attached domestic routes). Losing control will cause you to lose market share, which is the primary means towards winning the game. The war can be lost for the want of a nail.

Due to this extreme volatility, the game can take a long time to complete. Still, there is something attractive in its simplicity, which is surprising for an Avalon Hill game. The rules aren't as "fiddly" as many of their other entries. I'm considering adding some house rules to mitigate the randomness, such as bidding for turn order, and adding "phases" à la Power Grid that would allow for drawing more payoff counters. I think there could be a fantastic game under the skin, if I can find the time to uncover it.

{1 play • 5 players} Finally played this old classic. Some cool mechanisms that still hold up today... but they're marred by the fact that you must constantly gang up on the leader in the second half, and, even worse, sometimes your best move is to hammer the guy in last... and being in last is somewhat unrecoverable. Too bad, as I really like the theme. Maybe better with fewer players?

Can you say "Frustration" when your hubs' chips aren't pulled so you make no money due to no fault of your own? I know you can. Even that wouldn't be so bad considering some of the good things about the game if it didn't just take sooo long to complete this thing.
