San Juan may not be as complex as Puerto Rico, but to my mind, it's a lot more fun. I've only had the game for 4 days and I've already spotted 5 or 6 different strategies, so there is certainly a lot of depth there. I love the Crane!!!

My tip for SdJ 2004.

Very nice! Just as much fun as Puerto Rico, but plays quicker. True, you don't get the fun little wooden bits to play with, but the mechanics are well thought out and it seems nicely balanced. I'm not sure that the pencil and score pad are really necessary though--someone wanted to squeeze a few extra bucks out of the game obviously ... I almost want to say that I like this better than Puerto Rico, but I think I'd better play a few more games of each first.

A great, light version of Puerto Rico! Trying to decide which cards to keep and which to spend is agonizing, but in that good German-game way. Puerto Rico seems a bit cumbersome after playing San Juan.

Shorter and more portable version of Puerto Rico. In some ways this version is more balanced then Puerto Rico, and they are different enough that it is well worth owning both.

This is a really exciting game that flows quickly. It is like Puerto Rico, except the action is much quicker. It is challenging because you want to build everything, but when you build one thing you have to sacrifice the opportunities to build others.

Keeps getting better. Lots of strategies one can follow, and it plays extremely quickly.

My father, who generally doesn't like games, loves this game.

For a while I preferred Race for the Galaxy to this. But after not playing either for a while, RftG felt like hard work, whereas this was light and quick to get back into.

A quick to learn, quick to play, fun card based game with plenty to think about.

I updated this to a 10 after playing for what must be about 20 games. I'm impressed by the way the game can be completely different depending on number of players, how the cards come out and how you adapt your strategy to cope with this. very impressive game.

I know people are saying "if you are going to play Puerto Rico, then play Puerto Rico!". I have to disagree - sure PR is a great game, however so is San Juan - by it's own right!

San Juan is a GREAT addition to the PR line. In many cases, I actually prefer the fast gameplay of San Juan over Puerto Rico!

A nice "light" version of Puerto Rico. Fun and much quicker to play than its older brother the board game (much quicker setup, too.) A number of strategies are available to pursue for victory. My wife doesn't like this game at all and refuses to play it, but the rest of the family enjoys it enough and it has been getting good table time recently. One major advantage for me is the fact that it can be played *very quickly* and you can get in three games in an hour, if everyone is on their toes. Update: The more I play this game (including playing on the computer using the jsanjuan game), the more I like it. The mechanics, the interrelationships of the cards, the paths to victory, they all add up to a "10" game for me!

Seems to boil a lot of the good stuff from Puerto Rico down to a nice, simple, quick-playing, modest-sized package. You've got the tough choices, the nice flavor, but without the intensity of its big brother, an intensity that is good sometimes but not always. While San Juan doesn't have quite the visceral draw of Puerto Rico, its a very nice game which I like a lot and has had excellent replay value.

A streamlined, simplified version of Puerto Rico, played only with cards and a few tiles. Fast, addictive play good for two or three players (I haven't tried four yet). Lack of complexity relative to bookcase games like its larger sibling should make San Juan a good introduction game for new players.

Please see my review for more details!

Opening statistics shamelessly ripped from Fawkes.

After several playings, from two players to four, I absolutely love this game. It is light enough to teach to new players, yet deep enough to have effective variations on strategy. True, the cards do add quite a bit of luck to the game, but that can be mitigated somewhat with the right buildings and proper role selection. The four player game doesn't have as much anxiety over role selection each round, since only one role will not be picked.

Does a pretty good job of capturing a PR feel in a card game whose components can be carried around in my coat pocket. After about 50 games I've decided my ratings are as follows:

Two-player: 10. With only one opponent all possible strategies come into play, most of the buildings are useful, and the game is at it's most skillful.

Three-player: 8. Still a good game with three, but not as intense.

Four-player: 6. Four players is by far the worst. There's a chance that one or two of the players won't have a chance due to not seeing six pointers, and with four roles occurring each turn rather than three the manoeuvring is much less interesting.

Rated a 10 at BGG as over 85% of my plays are two-player.

We generally play this 2-player, and have never played Puerto Rico. We were worried about the length of the rulebook, but had no trouble playing. This is a very interesting game, which we both enjoy regardless of who wins. The basic idea is similar to that of Citadels. Although Citadels is a little simpler, San Juan has no confrontation. It feels like you are playing to see how well you can do with the cards you get, more than competing with others. We have played a couple times with 3 or 4 players, and it seems to accomodate any number nicely.

I've been on this site for 10 years now, and I'm far from sick of games, but I think I am, to some degree, sick of learning too many new games. I'm also tired of playing 4+ hr multiplayer games, but I'll still happily play really long games 2 player.

[29 plays] [2 player rating = 10] [3-4 player rating = 7]

Puerto Rico's cute stepchild. More luck, a little less balanced (there are some relatively rare and extremely powerful cards that can make or break your game if one player gets combos early like the Chapel, Library, City Hall, Prefecture, and Guild Hall and others from the expansion like the Harbor), less strategic options, and less diverse mechanics.

All that said and you might think I dislike San Juan, but you'd be wrong. It is an excellent card game that has some of the Puerto Rico feel with quick, tough choices. With 2 players and a little bit of time, hell yeah!, bring on San Juan. But with more than 2 players, I'd probably rather play Puerto Rico or perhaps another "meatier" game.

[All games post Alea Treasure Chest expansion are played with the expansion. I can't see purposely playing without it ever again, unless maybe teaching a beginner.]

San Juan is fast and mindboggling. There is a luck element in the game but skilled player can play against her bad luck. One of the best card games so far for me.

I love SJ with 2 and 3 players. With four game tends to be too much luck based but is nevertheless easily playable.

I also enjoy SJ a lot in bsw.

When I first played this game I liked it so much I downloaded the computer opponent and when it had bugs I wrote my own version. After that I was a bit played out and eventually learned Puerto Rico and liked it. But now I find Puerto Rico drags a bit if things aren't going my way, and I'm drawn back to the simplicity of San Juan.
