Games: Regarding my favorite theme of 'Fantasy', I'm hoping for fewer 'card' games and more 'board' games.

I had a feeling while reading the rules that this was going to be fun. Actually playing the game did not disappoint. I even enjoyed using the pips of the dice to count up knights. There is a fun bluffing aspect during battles. Light but requiring thought. Extremely fun with two players.

Had a good time playing this. I was unsure at first but after just one game I caught a glimpse of the subtleties on offer here.

I loved the fact that after the first game I was very keen to play again just to see how the special powers would interact, I would argue that the fact that the special powers aren't so in your face makes it more enjoyable than cosmic encounters...which I love.

Well done Miles, an impressive first game.

A fast playing and enjoyable mini-Risk style wargame.

The rules aren't too complicated, the gameplay is varied due to the modular board and different "Special Power" cards and at 20 minutes to half an hour, it's not over long.

A fun little filler game between the heavier stuff.

Single play. I'd never heard of this, and when I saw players being given special powers my heart sank a little, but I actually enjoyed it. Simple movement rules, simple combat rules, but enough to get your teeth into. Wonderfully small box, too.

IMHO, an under-rated game that reminds me of Suburbia set in the Middle Ages. There's a lot to keep track of on neighboring tiles and what they offer and it may get chaotic with more players but there's a good conflict game packed in this small box. It's certainly in the Weuro category.

At first pass, this game appears to be a bit cheap and cheerful but I was pleasantly surprised to see that the mechanics held together well. All in all, this is a nice gateway game and 18 year old Miles Ratcliffe has done a credible job in his first design. The game turn moves along quickly and I like that the games scales from 2-6 by adding to and changing the layout of the map. An upgraded version with thicker tiles and full color art would do it further justice. Medieval Mastery is a light, fun game and definitely suited to those who like straightforward and uncomplicated conflict. It is not going to set the world alight but it would be a nice addition to your game collection. I look forward to further designs from Miles.

Abstract area-control game with dice as armies. Can use special abilities, but essentially allocate number of pips across all dice as desired, then declare an attack from one territory. Combat is pip value vs. pip value plus tactic cards played from hand to increase attack or defense. Modular board has tile worth various points - when you control tiles equal to game end condition, you win.

Pretty good first attempt for an 18 year old. Well done. The artwork is great and the component quality decent. The gameplay was a bit imbalanced in my view with the artifacts having too wide a range in power and then made things too reliant on luck of the draw. However the game could be played without them but would be quite dry. Nice ideas though and I wish you luck with your next project!

This is a tile based area control game that uses six-sided dice not only for battling, but for tracking the number of knights you have in each area. The game plays fairly smooth, but it can last upwards of 2 to 3 hours in a 6 player game. For that kind of time there are much better area control games to be played.

Simple conquest game, but having the right cards in hand seems to be of overwhelming importance. The board play is too obvious and lacks meaningful decisions.

One (4 player game). Started off well and then developed into a slug fest between 2-3 players in contention for a win that went on for 30 minutes longer than it should have until one player managed to get the right (i.e. luck) dice rolls combined with the right (i.e. luck of the draw) cards. Designer would appear to be aware of this problem and sees it as positive feature of game! I'd rather play this for say 60 minutes (and not 90 minutes) and do something else with my 30 minutes.

Tentative rating after two somewhat anticlimactic games: one three-player game that was a quick lesson in the three-player problem, and one very one-sided two-player game that was decided by abilities and card draws. I have some concerns that some of the artefacts are fiddly and/or unbalanced, and that combat is a pretty mechanical affair (always attack with max number of knights, always choose highest conflict card on hand, always play support cards if necessary and possible). I suspect the game generally works better with more players, shifting the focus from tit-for-tat conflict resolution to implied politics, and would like to try it some more.

I really appreciate the layout and overall clarity of the rulebook. The tiles are pretty as well.

The game just doesn't work with more than two players at all: The game state does not progress, since the three dudes autogained each turn will get obliterated, decimated, and annihilated before your next turn. Also, since the only way to discard outside of battle is having a specific player power or walking to a specific tile, there isn't any real hand management included, which means there isn't enough room for skillful play.

Representing units with dice pips instead of plastic or wooden dudes is obviously a price point decision, but it is way too slow and cumbersome compared to actual soldier pieces.

Might be worth trying with two players if you replace the dice with tiny plastic dudes, for example from La Città or Aztlán.

Medieval Mastery has the dubious distinction of joining the Iron Maiden, the Brazen Bull, the Scavenger's Daughter, and the Pear of Anguish as torture implements of choice. Every second of this game, you will be in pain.

It didn't help that I played "The Master" only minutes after my first game of Battle Beyond Space, which is ten times sillier and twenty times cooler. Nexus Ops is still the pinnacle of high adrenaline, territory-based combat, though, for those who enjoy that sort of thing.

Looks great but doesn't work so well. The biggest problem is that playing is just about going back and forth without any real development or decisions. Almost equally big problem are identical card sets that in the end work like dice (which is mostly just part of aforementioned problem).

Not a game I play often. Would recommend using the shorter game variation from the back of the rule book, otherwise it really can take hours of lands passing back and forth before somebody wins! (and nobody cares anymore) I think there is too much luck involved in this game and yet it is too well balanced for anybody to win.

Medieval Mastery is a very fun, tactical game about medieval conquest. The game is very easy to learn, has a great deal of replayability, plays in under an hour with up to 6 players, has very little downtime and is such joy to play. I truly believe Medieval Mastery is a game that deserves a place in anyone's collection... and that's not just because I designed it. :-D
