Great expansion. Played only Germany so far. The board has a little more room so it plays beter with 5.

Based on 1 6er play of the Western US map and 1 5er play of Germany.

Western US - Good balance and seemed to fit 6 players in nicely. Everyone was still building at the end. On turn 1, the person building 6th had trouble finding a good starting spot; so bidding it up on the first turn is probably important. (9/10)

Germany - Map was large enough to support 5 players and I suspect it may be one of the few maps that can handle 6 players. I really like the rules twists of the Engineer role (reduced cost) and the "no unconnected track can exist" at the end of a player's build. (10/10)

If you like playing AoS with 5 or 6 players, I recommend picking up this expansion as it will see a lot of play.

Germany is so good, that despite the fact that the Western US is far from essential, this purchase is entirely validated and recommended by how great Germany is.

Germany (10): Plays pretty close to the original rules so this isn't a big step into AoS variation, but the new rules tighten the game up dramatically. The options available seem less focused on Urbanization and Locomotive as the 1/2 price track really helps. The board feels sparce in the begining so first build and first ship seem more important than the base map. Often Urbaniztion was picked third, but more as a way to build four spaces, so it became more like the engineer just to connect and complete track. Highly recommended with 4 or 5.

Western US (5): Without comparing this map to any of the other AoS maps, it is fine. It works well, and there don't seem to be any significant problems with it. But when held up to the standard this is a little disappointing. One of the beautiful elements of AoS is the interaction. This map and added rules stifle the much of what I love in the base game. By significantly limiting how you can build your network and by terrain dividing players apart from each other, much of the game is reliant on the cubes that come up and the result of the roles earned from the auction rather than the players getting all up in each other's biznizz! Certainly you can infect other player's networks, but the fact that you must always stay connected contiguously until the golden spike, limits options and cuts out many of the more worthwhile decisions. Meh.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

Germany: "Normal", Rec:4-6, OK: 3

Age of Steam GERMANY map Errors, Warfrog reprint edition ONLY

Berlin should be a Black city and accept Black goods. Berlin is colored brown in the Warfrog map.

Lyon, Paris, Antwerpen, Rotterdam, Kopenhagen, Warschau are Foreign Terminals and should be colored Green. They are brown in the Warfrog map.

A white circle joining the Essen/Dortmund hex with the Dusseldorf/Koln hex is missing. This circle is for placing a Track Ownership marker.

Also, please ignore the little arrows in some of the cities on the Warfrog reprint map.

Western US: the most thematic of the boards I have played so far, although building in the mountainous west can be harsh. 9 after 1 play
Germany: another fascinating map - the build rule really changes this game. 10 after 1 play

Germany is very good and is a remake of VOLLDAMPF another train game by Wallace before he released Age of Steam

Western US is good for 4 or 5 players with the bonus VP for linking east-west

Played Germany with 4 players. Excellent map, lots of options, but still constricted enough to heighten the tension properly. 3 Players was a little too open, but still made for a decent game. 5 Players was very tight, but still excellent.

Played Western US with 5 players. Extremely tight and vicious. Probably not a map I'd want to play often, but a different experience.

I almost always hate expansions (I like clean less muddied games) but I must say that Germany is just an awesome expansion. The production power of Berlin, the isolation of the southern mountains area, and the mid game strength of the remote cities all make for a richer game. Make sure to read the map errata: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/62052

The US on the other hand needs a bit of caution. Having to stay with the one railroad can really take some players out if they get boxed into a dry area. The player who can get a turn 1 income increase of 4 is even harder to stop since you can't go elsewhere to block them. For experienced players only.

We played Germany once, it was a 4 player game. One newbie! We had a great time playing this map and loved the map layout.

One player mentioned a couple of times that he liked the fact that you could only build finished track.

On this map the engineer lets you build one track tile out of 3 - not 4! - for half the price and was needed several times for building threw expensive terrain.

Western US not yet played.
