Interesting game. I like how the action cards work and the player board building.

Only played it 2-player and I get the feeling it's better with more.

I was looking this one for my list, a friend took initiative and i had the chance to test it, is great Euro game but i feel that a player or maybe two could get really screwed because the card that goes out in the row. like the mechanic and remembers me a little of loyang with kingsburg.

The card play and swap mechanic is clever, the rules are simple, and the game is fun and plays quickly. However balance is achieved by greatly limiting the actions presented on the cards, limiting the scope of what can be done and sometimes making it seem as though the game is playing you. This game reminds me of The Speicherstadt (although the mechanics are not as unique), i.e. simplification achieved at the expense of variety and depth of cards. It's certainly worth a few more plays and Tahkokallio is a talented designer worth keeping an eye on.

Enjoyable Euro with, yes, cubes and, yes, victory points. Quite similar core mechanic to Notre Dame in that cards determine which actions you can take as opposed to the usual worker-placed-to-block-opponent method. Several different options to pick that might lead to victory, and with hidden objective cards there's an extra element of not knowing what exactly is most important to your opponent (but there's enough play-time to try to work it out from watching their turns carefully).

I love this game. It's got a good theme and smooth gameplay. It's simple in design and is not a complex game. My wife isn't much of a gamer and this is one that she enjoys. There are a couple of negatives. Sometimes the game gets a little bogged down in turn play. Also, it could be a little more elaborate. There are only a few options on each turn, if the cards don't fall right for you it can be a long game. More options would help this. An expansion would be great.

A surprisingly fun game with enough depth to satisfy regular gamers. The game mechanics are streamlined to allow fast games, which is a plus. Recommended.

1.2.2014 Review: 8 -> 7.75 Just a slight drop in this one, as it isn't quite as meaty as it should be to maintain replay value over a long period of time.

Just got my hands on this one. Component quality is good and the rules seem simple enough but very interesting. At 19 euros it's a real bargain, too! Now I just have to find time to play it a few times before I can give any kind of rating.

First impression after a couple of two-player games: 7.5. Pretty interesting and well-working euro, but the two-player experience is a bit dry.. most likely will be much better with three or four players. Have to play more.

Played the prototype. Very nice artwork! The gameplay is sort of smooth and makes you feel that you could build up some strategy. But somehow luck plays a bigger role than it seems to be at first sight. Actually there are always enough cards to choose from (7). But if you - as one of the other players does - need a special card to go on, but that certain card always shows up when its the other players turn, you can find yourself blocked for many rounds with no more chance to win. Thats what happened in our round... Anyway I liked the game anyway.

A resource management game with mechanics similar to 7 wonders. You expand your Principato by building new markets & banks for gold or farms and fields for food. The building are required to store any goods you produce. Using these resources through events based upon the current Age, you try to enhance your domain through Military or Cultural means.

*Strongly* reminiscent of Fortuna (and released the same year), both are light-weight, engine-building euro games that utilize an "activate-then-exchange" mechanism for its action cards. Ironically, our group played both games back-to-back and were astonished as to their similarities - if you played one you have the basic core concept of the other.

Which one is better?

Well, Principato has no dice rolling so right away it's less random... But, the action cards in Principato is more random due to its card drafting mechanic as opposed to Fortuna's constant set of twelve actions to swap between, therefore actually making it difficult to plan ahead while long-term planning is quite possible in Fortuna... That being said, the secret goal cards are not as overpowered and have a strict limit of two per a player in Principato - whereas a single player could binge on collecting goal cards in Fortuna - therefore making Principato much more balanced... But, Fortuna is clearly the more streamlined of the two, making it a breeze to teach newcomers...

It's a toss up!

Fortuna may be the better gateway game due to it being more streamlined while Principato may be the better gamer's game due to having slightly more control and complexity.

Both will remain in my collection as I am a sucker for engine-building games and both have enough unique subtleties to prevent both experiences feeling the same - only the same flavor.

Good game, if I was to be critical I might say it is a little long (clocks in at up to 2 hours with 4 players) for what it is (a light/medium Euro). Quite a nice, engine building game which forces you to balance (you need gold to build food production and food to build gold production). Probably the heart of the game and certainly the best bit is that and allows you keep two actions to yourself, swapping them with other actions which are moving along a conveyor belt. You need to grab things you really need or deprive other players of them (though taking something means you have to give something else back) and it is painful to see an action you wanted dropping into the discard pile.

Fun card driven engine building game. Game did last a bit too long with four compared to what you get in return but with more experience or less players this should not be a problem.

Based on one play. A few interesting things going on here, but a bit marred by frequency of needing to move bits relative to number of actions. Also, not sure the various end game points are thoroughly thought through.

I rather like the engine building aspect to this, though I am a bit put off by the unequal starting lots. Getting one of the plus cards instead of one of the storage cards is strictly worse.

Anyone who finds most light filler games to be a bit too light might well like this one. It's not a full-blown resource production and conversion game like Ora & Labora or Le Havre... but it's got a lot of those elements and it plays very quickly.

The BGG entry says the mechanics are card drafting, hand management, set collection and tile placement. Oddly, this game does not really have any of these mechanics (at least not exactly the way you'd probably assume). Basically, it's a role selection/action selection game where you produce two resources--food and money--in order to strengthen your army and produce works of culture.

Whoever best optimizes production and storage of resources (leading to strength and culture) will most likely win.

Not bad. However your strategy is essentially dictated by your bonus cards, and there don't seem to be many options in how you choose to build your economy. A bit more scope for clever strategy would please me more.

Seemingly a "generic euro", but we enjoy it! Attractive bits. The central mechanism of trading cards between your hand and the central queue, which loses its head card and gains a new card at the tail each turn, introduces some interesting tactics. There is definite luck of the draw in what order the cards come out, but still plenty of room for intelligent planning and tactics. I also like that there is not a huge number of various special action cards, but rather a small easy-to-teach set of card types.

Build up your military in an arms race or prepare to meet your secret objectives? Principato is a card game in three phases where you really must manage resource gathering and storing vs. building and paying off mercenaries. Absolutely worth a few plays.

Needed a little more graphic differentiation between the harvest and storage tiles.

Provisional rating based on one play.

The main game mechanics with actions that get "stored" by each player and how the available actions change over time are both quite interesting.

I had a good time playing but I'm worried about the balance of the goals, hoarding of the work-generating actions, and general replayability. Definitely willing to play more to determine if these are problems or not.
