Excellant, best game on WWI, heck any, operational level I own. The CRT is inspired, wish it was used in more games. The system tricks the German player into grinding down his army in pursuit of that ellusive victory.

The designer has received many kudos for his other games, especially Paths of Glory, but to me this is his masterpiece. A managable monster with only 20 pages of rules ( 3 of which are set up), it nevertheless is a challenge to play well and recreates the campaigns of 1918 exceedingly well. The subtle elements of the rules such as the use of tanks changing the combat sequence demonstrate their key role as well as their weakness. The morale system works smoothly and effectively to place the players in the role of the commanders.

We have just played this as part of a commeration of the 90th anniversary with three players each taking the role of Haig, Foch and Ludendorf. The Germans attacked the French and took Rheims, Soissons, Epernay and Chalons and the French morale was down to three (zero being defeat). The arrival of the US units and British counterattacks rescued the day and by late October the Germans had run out of reinforcements and been forced back to the extent that they surrendered.

The only minor gripe I have is that it is a long game and wished that there was a smaller one that could show the same accuracy and interest.

One of my favourite wargames. Lovely maps and looks epic when fully set out with unbroken lines of troops from North to South. Allows the German player to attack anywhere he wants and therefore eminently replayable.

Some errata problems and rumours of perfect German plans but nothing that stands in the way of my enjoyment of this excellent game.

A great game on a very interesting topic. I like the allied counter ofensive the best. The French are very tough to wear down.

Love the map, counters, and rules. CRT is my favorite of any I've ever seen. Lack of ZOC works very well. Long game (12-25 hours), very fun to play and good 3-player.

One of the better WWI war games out there. Nice components with concise rules. Heat is on the Germans to hit hard and fast early while the Allies try to hold and then counter-attack.

I love game uses movie title. This is one. I picked up the book by Erich Maria Remarque in Australia Borders. Flipping pages crazily, I was stunned how the movie recreated what the book described. This makes me even more interested in this Ted's title wargame, for what it could bring us to life the horror of WW1. Not to miss is the latest movie on WW1 too: A Very Long Engagement. Winning a eBay bid on this on 2 Sep 06.

Very fun game. In terms of history there may be better. It overstates attacking for both sides. Nevertheless, it is one of the most interesting WWI games in terms of strategy.

Ted Raicer's best design IMO, and along with the old S&T Tannenberg, my favourite operational-level WWI game. My one concern is that in ten or more games I've never seen the Germans lose when they commit everything to an offensive against the British. I'm not sure whether this is a design flaw or an indication that Ludendorff really blew it.

I find this game more fun to play than the designer's earlier 1918: Storm in the West, but the balance issue troubles me.

An good strategic game of the Western Front in 1918 with the best tactical WWI combat system I have seen and produced one excellent game when the Germans failed to take Ypres in a bloodbath, but by drawing in so many British troops were able to smash their way past Arras, drive to the coast and cut the British from the channel ports for a victory. Very long game to play though, and almost impossible to win using historical German tactics. In 1918 they attacked the British and French alternately, but here they only need to defeat one or the other so that makes no sense. The French have such rough terrain that an offensive there won't work well, so all that is left is to attack the British and I got bored with that.

Interresting game. I still believe that it is a bit too easy for the germans to concentrate their forces and crush major portion of the front.

Sauron was not of mortal flesh, he could never again appear fair to the eyes of Men, yet his spirit arose & returned to Mordor. There he dwelt, dark & silent, until he wrought a new guise, an image of malice & hatred made visible; the Eye of Sauron.

One moment only it stared out as from some great window immeasurably high there stabbed a flame of red, the flicker of a piercing Eye. The Eye was not turned on them, it gazed north but Frodo at that dreadful glimpse fell as one stricken mortally.

My 1st best game in 1997. Enjoyed this game very much and played it heavily in the first few years of it's release. Been replaced by a number of titles now; but thought it was the bees knees at the time.

good system with a couple head-scratchers: there is a 3 mile gap inthe allied line in 1918 atthe scenario start? eliminated units can be garrisons as if they still had a step left? but who cares, it comes down to 2 looong lines trading shots.

Will MIH ever publish this game again? Wrote the company and was told that when enough people want it by pre-order it will be published. How many is that? Who knows he did not tell me and neither does the site! But Torbuk stuff is coming out like bunnies! Is GMT the only people who are not a sleep at the wheel?

I remember this being a much talked about title on wargame mailing lists back when it came out. I've only ever played it solo, but it was quite enjoyable.
