A fine game that calls for experience, nuanced play, and subtle thinking. I do wish a 2nd edition of the rules would be produced.

The game is playable with the present rules, but many questions (and I do not like to use the word "many" because it is imprecise) are only addressed on Consimworld, where Ed Wimble gives excellent and patient support.

The map is dark, but once your eyes get used to it, you forget about the darkness.

I would like to see the system expanded and developed to have a game that covers the whole war.

A great game with three interesting mechanics (1) a victory track the measures different factors for each side, (2) off board formation display, and (3) simultanious operation selection.

This is my only game on AWI that is not either a single battle or the entire war. The map is a beauty! I think it's darkness goes well with the 'Year of the Hangman' theme.

Very good historical presentation and scenario playthrough. For the non-solitaire scenarios, I used some solo rules from OSG and SASL. Campaign game should be very interesting.

A very good and very underated game. The mechanics, especially for combat and replacements and morale are very innovative and subtle. My only criticism is the fact that in the scenario setups hex numbers are not listed which makes locating the named hexes rather more difficult and time consuming. This is the only proper wargame I have lost in about 3 years!

For fans of the American Revolution, the rules and chrome are incredible. There is a really great game in this box. However, it is penalized by having poor online support (for instance, notice how dead the forums are), it has zero solitaire suitability, and no VASSAL module.

If it were on VASSAL and I could find an opponent, this would easily be a 9. It's that good, but the total game playing/enjoyment package suffers due to lack of support.

This is not a simple system, and some easy means of providing greater clarity, and thus access, could and should have been implemented. That said, it is very much worth the investment, and I would love to see if this design could be applied successfully to the Southern Campaign.

a great subject outstandingly researched, but marred by a very sloppy operational system (and component issues). next time it comes off the shelf i think I'll try modding it as a Campaigns of Napoleon variant of sorts, or at least make ZoC's somewhat sticky to get rid of the ridiculous encirclement issues.

Didn't like the movement system, the enemy can play ring around the rosey with your stacks, dropping off units in each hex. Thus you are surrounded and will die after combat. Also in the combat system, odds are almost irrelavant, as retreats are based soley on a die roll against the units morale level.

Very strange system, probably not fully playtested. There is an obvious inversion in a table but the designer insists that it was intended. The first scenario can be won on turn 1 by the Rebels. Interesting historical study, but no game. I sold my copy in 2002.

Picked this up at Yorktown after walking the grounds where Washington and Lafayette made a Cornwallis sandwich, and where Hamilton finally had his chance to wriggle out of staff work and try field command. My first game acquisition in years... as is my old MO I studied it for a few evening hours and played through a scenario solo, but haven't played *with* anyone yet.

Horrible title for a wargame. How does the War for American Independence could be related to hangman is some kind of puzzle for me. Anyhow, I am interested in a the game as there is only a few games on the subject in the market now. Some rules have problem as noted by others. Very nice map and game turn spiral.

Although I have not yet played, I am, as ever, impressed with the graphics package. Customarily beautiful counters and an alluring map. As expected, many find the map to dark. For myself, I love it.

The continuous grousing over the clarity of COA rules in general are reasonable and I expect will continue to include this game as well. From my perspective however, I attribute COA rules issues more often to a requirement of study and implementation (continued play) more than just being poorly written. Just my personal opinion.

Additionally, I feel rules confusion can and often is misplaced for complexity. Any veteran gamer knows that in general, COA does not produce simple, lightweight simulations. After all, that very premise is precisely what draws many of its loyal customers to them. Gamers must be prepared to work a bit harder and give more time to COA games. As a gamer who subscribes to the COA approach, I often find that this additional investment pays off. That said, I will say that COA would serve itself and its customers better by investing more time and effort into getting rules sets settled before release. This would also help fend off the numerous and irritating supplemental internet rules sets which continuously pop up and which gaming groups like my own seem to gravitate to out of past or expected future frustration.

And finally, I echo the calls for the expansion of this operational game scale and system into a monster game to encompass the entirety of the war. What a grand game that would be.
