One of the best values for your conflict simulation dollars published in 2011. Please note I am not rating my own design (Slaughterhouse) but the total package, at least 80% of which was created by other people.

Look for the sequel, Four Roads to Paris, which will include a quartet of games depicting the campaigns in France and the Low Countries in the spring of 1940.

Four different designers on the same subject offering different insights and interpretations in one single package. ATO has always been on the leading design concept and series developments. I like what they do.

Well, I'm afraid it'll have to wait. Whatever it was, I'm sure it was better than my plan to get out of this by pretending to be mad. I mean, who would have noticed another madman round here?

The games look good and at the price, this might be the best bargain in wargaming. The games are mixed lot, but only one of them is full blown stinker. Ignore the two one ratings on the bottom. Those are from guys who hate everything Rinella does, even though he only designed one part of this game. Really guys, don't punish Nord, Prados, and Raicer just because you hate Rinella. As a side note, the article that comes with the game is pretty tepid, and includes a whole host of strawman arguments.

Codeword: Barbarossa - 1: This game is worse than a turkey. Prados seems to have thrown this one together, and it has an old school feel to it, but in all the wrong ways. The victory conditions are arcane. Also, this only confirms my opinion that Prados is the worst rulebook writer on earth.

Hitler Turns East - 8: This is the best game of the bunch, and one of Raicer's best designs. The order and chit pull mechanics are original and it is relatively chrome free, neither of which is what you expect from Raicer. However, I think this one favors the Germans. Just a feeling though.

Slaughterhouse - 8: Fast and furious, but there are some vague rules and I get the feeling that the impulse rolls can make or break many sessions. I like the commander rules, although the Germans are far too likely to fire Kluge on turn 2.

Strike the Bear - 7: An unusual game due to the map being used. I like it, but the game is more fiddly than Slaughterhouse and Hitler Turns East.

Codeword rates an 8 for me. On to the other events!

Strike the Bear is a 6 for me. Rules need a bit of tightening on a few points, but the mechanics are innovative and seem to work well. But what is odd is that the Operations points available to the two sides each turn are always about equal. I played with the optional rule to allow saving half of the unused operations points, which helps the Germans out a fair bit. Weather table also seems too kind to the Germans.

Hitler Turns East is probably a 5. One can get a weird imbalance between progress of fronts that seems out of the range of possibility.

Slaughterhouse is a 9. Quick playing, and I think that the area impulse system works well for this campaign.

- Codeword Barbarossa: 7 for now. It is not about the actual invasion of the USSR, but about the build-up on both sides of the border. It is quite a novelty. I like the use of cards to insert certain events. Definitely a keeper.

- Hitler Turns East:

- Slaughterhouse: 7. I really like the easy to use combat system. I am not so fond of the army level detail.

- Strike the Bear: 3. The rules are clearly incomplete and I have lots of questions that should have been in the rules, because they are very basic. Liked the map though.

Great concept! Takes me back the the Quad Game era of the 1970's. I'll update my rating as I play each game. Featuring both my favorite Old School (Prados) and current designer (Racier) this was a must purchase.

Codeword:Barbarossa: 5
Nice concept but the execution of which leaves a bit to be desired, as simply repositioning units around the map isn't terribly exciting. As another commenter stated, the rules could be better written. The card play is the best feature but of course that kills solo value.

Hitler Turns East: 7.5
Fast, simple, and with the right touch of chrome for its size. Game revolves around Using Command Points to purchase Orders for your Army Groups/Fronts (4 for each player). Orders are drawn randomly and executed before the next is drawn. HTE will get played a lot and the rating may go up. Average solo value.

Slaughterhouse: 8
This is indeed the gem of the bunch. Just the right amount of innovation without overdoing like Strike the Bear. Simple combat resolution at first, but the system works well. Leader counters with actual pictures of the leaders is awesome. Game plays quite quickly with decent solo value.

Strike the Bear: 5.5
Sometime innovation for innovations sake can be annoying, and that is the case here. The weird "Octagon/Diamond" map grid adds nothing to the game. Historicity is blown by including an SS Korps in 1941! Because of the victory determination the game is well suited to solitaire play.

Overall: 6.5
Make sure you go to the ATO website and get the errata, some of which involves OoB and set up. A great value for your money. Wish we would see more sets like this from game companies.

Slaughterhouse - 6
Lack of variety in combat results makes the game almost scripted. An attack does either nothing, causes 1 step loss, or causes 2 step losses if mech is attacking. Against forts the mech bonus is NA, so it's 1 step per turn max. The Sovs can then replace the step easily by flipping a unit elsewhere on the map. The overall effect makes it feel like you are playing out an algorithm. I don't see an auto-victory being possible against a competent Soviet player, which further serves to take the excitement out of the game IMO.

The counterattack rule is almost never effective and adds rules overhead for little gain.

I was looking forward to this game, but it just didn't fire on all cylinders the way NWBM did.

Hitler Turns East - looking like a 7 at least, but I need more experience with it.

Haven't played Strike the Bear or Codeword yet.

Provides insight into at how four designers tackle Barbarossa with various levels of success. "Codeword: Barbarossa" by John Prados is the most innovative and challenging as it explores the preparation by both sides leading up to the German attack. All four were worth playing at least once for comparison purposes and they don't take up a lot of time. But you probably won't be returning for repeat plays.

This is a preliminary rating for a great concept, but will all four games deserve it? And then there is Michael Rinella, who does his damnedest to go out of his way to be Michael Rinella. But one must learn to separate the artistic product from the artist who created it, and such is the case with this prickly ego.

___________________________________________________

Okay, here's why it is a 5 as of October 21st, 2012.

1) I don't do "7's."

2) Hitler Turns East & Slaughterhouse are solid designs. HTE is a familiar tune and hardly innovative. It's all been done before. Still, it plays smoothly, and I had the fewest questions for HTE, a Raicer rarity to be sure.

Slaughterhouse seems more innovative, but its needs more plays. I agree with those who say the rules need clarification and tightening. The map is a loser, seriously. Point to point is fine, but don't make the map but ugly. The Leader counters are a nice touch, especially with the surprises, mostly in the form of your 2nd and 3rd lines, on the back. I like the road structure; it defies the stereotypical and makes sneaky Soviet moves and countermoves possible, bearing in mind that almost everything, at this scale, usually moves but one area.

3) Code Barbarossa I have not played, but the map is begging to be put out of its misery. I can only imagine enjoying CB if it is combined with one of the two above games.

4) Strike the Bear should be called Woof! the Dog. A good concept mired in oxes and diamonds, and Tim Taylor is correct; it's just a gimmick. The designer called it in with this howler, which is about as nuanced as sharp nails on a clean chalkboard.

As a whole, I would buy the set of four games again. I like the concept, and I would like it applied to other themes, which some folks on CSW have suggested. ATO has great components mixed with not-so-great. And as Gittes and company have noted, this is a great value.

Now, why did ATO choose the designers that they did?

The 4 games are of very different quality.
From best to worse imO:

Slaughterhouse: good system, seems balanced
Hitler turns East: also quite good system,
Operation Barbarossa: intersting situation
Strike the Bear: the rules are a mess, also the Victory conditions may change in the last turn and may make a whole game senseless...
