Right now, this is probably my favorite game. I've only played about 5 times, so I imagine my rating will go down from here, but for now I can't wait to play again. I love the epic feeling of the game - the long campaigns, the careful planning and quick strikes. The turn order is very well done and keeps things moving. My games have gone 3-5 hours, but I've never been bored or tired of the game for a moment.

The simplified rules suck!
With the standard rules the game just shines. Solid classic.

War of the Ring is as close to perfect of a game as you can get out of Tolkien's work. The asymmetrical sides and strategies are well-balanced. For some time I've said that I would raise my score from 9 to 10 when I completed a game in two hours, and I've finally done that! Congratulations to my second "10" ever.

An excellent long wargame, despite the graphic design flaws (small font on cards, figures hard to distinguish). Note to the Eurogamers: if you don't like long war games, stay away. To anyone else, this is a fine game that should allow many replays. It reminds me of The Napoleonic Wars, another game I rated a "10." I've been looking for a good fantasy wargame for over 35 years, and this is the first game that I feel qualifies!

War of the Ring is a great strategy game.

It represents incredibly well all the whereabouts of the geopolitic of The Middle Earth at the End of the Third Age.

This game is 20 times better than the Old SPI game (1977) wich was a good game in his time.

War of The Ring is much more interesting that it may look like at first glance.
Please refrain from hasty criticism, as one need many plays to understand the deepness of the game.

Quite good game to play with 4 players with a cooperative strategy within the teams(shared-victory home rule).

This game is really incredible.

I love this game and play it at any opportunity. Despite the terrible rules and the amount of time and energy necessary to play the game, it seems fresh and tense every time I play. That said, there are some friends who refuse to play this game ever again. That said, I think this is one of the best games emulating a genre or book, and almost see it as playing a "What If" scenario or alternate retelling of the Lord of the Rings rather than just playing a game. Wonderful!

I'm a big Star Wars and Lord of the Rings fan (readily apparent from my collection), so this was a must have. The game pieces and board are amazing and it plays like Star Wars: Queen's Gambit on steroids. I have nothing but good things to say about this game.

Wow, an amazing and intense gaming experience. The theme is incorporated into the game very well and the balance between luck and strategy is just right. The action dice and event cards enhance the replayability greatly since they are different every game.

Played my first game yesterday, although it was just the introductory game, it was still good. I felt it was greatly a disadvantage to be the Free People. But I am positive it will be better with the advanced rules in play. Played a rule wrongly: respawning of the Free People (easily forgotten) during Mustering. Need a second go at it soon!!!!

I've only played one game of War of the Ring, but it was a real blast. I took a military victory over the Free Peoples. However, it has been noted a thousand times that the game is largely luck dependent. Some good rolls (or bad rolls) and some really good cards (or bad cards) can really change the face of a battle, but there is a lot of tactical play required in making the right moves at the right time.

The only reason this is not a 10 for me is the playtime.

This is THE Tolkein game. It defines the genre. Of all the games it brings the true flavor of the War and the struggle to destroy the ring. Unlike other games (MECCG, LoTR Board game) this has it all in one easily accessible package. The only complaint I've seen that's truly justified is the small text on the cards, but you get used to it some how. The map is beautiful, the pieces are awesome (you don't HAVE to paint them), the rulebook is attractive and well written (perhaps with some minor organizational problems), and the game play simply works. I have no problems with the length of the game (4 hrs for the first game, much less after that), considering other games, like LoTR Risk, take just as long. I would strongly suggest forgoing the "introductory game", it is little but an unfair game of risk, weighted strongly in favor of the sauron player. Dive right into the richness of the standard game, break a few rules as you learn, but you will enjoy yourself so much more. You can't beat this game for full imersion into Tolkein's world. Update: After 10 plays, the game consistently takes only 2hrs, and I still love it and want to play more.

I really like this game. It captures the feel and flavor of the books and film perfectly. I like the gameplay and the assymetrical nature of the matchup between the Free Peoples and the Shadow. I especially love the minis! The game has a bit of a learning curve but is worth the effort to learn.

Superb game, great fun, awesome bits, excellent theme...

Plus, playing as one side or the other is a distinctly different experience.

Not a "wargame" in the purest sense at all, and I think it's important to understand this. As a GAME with a war theme, this one shines.

I love this game dearly, would never turn down a game (provided we had the time, of course!)

Increible.

The rules take a bit of reading, but the combination of cards and action dice captures the theme beautifully and allows for a variety of strategies. I especially like the hidden movement mechanic for the hobbits. Two small quibbles are that the game can sometimes end abruptly and the Mt. Doom endgame is played essentially on autopilot. Granted, I am a LOTR fan, but this is an excellent game.

This game is about as good as it gets in my mind. A good mix of war and fantasy. Plenty of bits. Good models and gameplay. I first felt that Mordor is a little too powerful, but overall the game is pretty balanced. I love the devastation when the evil player knows the fellowship is close to the chasm in mount doom. The gameboards are very nice as well.

Great game to play once in a while (for us, being about 4 hours to play). Captures the theme nicely.
Played 4.5 times as FP & have yet to win. Not sure if FP are harder to play or whether I just suck.

You definitely get more from it if you're a Tolkien nut.

When I opened the game box I was in awe of the quality of the game components. As a wargamer perhaps purchasing games from Decision Games at even greater cost, may have lowered my standards. With information gathered from previous post on BGG I knew I was going to paint the minis before actually playing the game, the details of the sculptures demanded it. 9 days later and after 35 hrs of painting I played my first solitaire game. The game is great fun was easy to learn and shows great replayablity. I am completely pleased with my purchase.
