I have played several top ranked boardgames (Puerto Rico, the Princes of Florence, Advanced Squad Leader, Carcassone, Settlers of Catan, Shadows over Camelot to mention only few), but this was something... bigger... something epic. Finally a game that really has captured the spirit of the great Lord of the Rings, even better than those nice P. Jackson movies. Yes, I am a Tolkien fan, but I'm not a war game fan (or at least I wasn't before this one). The only fault in the WotR is the long duration of the game (and putting all those figures to the board before the game), so I'm not able to play it as often as I would like. But it's worth of waiting and all the preparations! Clearly the best boardgame I've ever played!

Not often does a game leave you thinking after it is played...but War of the Ring did that to me. Ever since I played, I find myself thinking about future strategies, and when will I finally get the chance to play again? A masterpiece of gaming and an honour to Tolkien! (To enhance the experience, play with the film's score!)

Great gameplay and the best themed game I have played. Light war game style reminds me of Axis & Allies. Both sides have their challenges and rewards. Finally reaching Mount Doom and destroying the ring feels great especially if, like me, it takes you a few games to do it. Watching your unending Shadow hoards crush the free peoples armies make you feel invincible, the Ring is mine!! Until next time which is hopefully not too long but tricky as our games take 4 hours (including rules checks).

WotR takes awhile to learn, and really needs two players who are familiar with the game, the cards, and the general flow of the turns. Once you have that though, wow. So many choices and options, and the various aspects of the game (politics, mustering, leaders, etc.) are quite clever and fun.

After many more games with players who are familiar with the game, this has become one of the gems of my collection. Every game is different, every game is intensely interesting, and every game is a treat.

Excellent game. Beautiful components. Lots of strategic options. Each play has different twists to it. The game has lot of flavor and events from the book without being too 'scripted'. This is my favorite game!

In a nutshell, this brings Middle Earth, the place where I would like to be, to life.

It is well conceived (driven by an innovative dice mechanics), very well developed and rather well balanced too (maybe slightly favouring the Shadow, which has definitely been fixed in the second edition). Gameplay is tense and, to me, engaging like nothing else.

This game is the reason why I can't rate anything else a 10.

Wow. Right now there's no game I'm more consumed with. This is by far my favorite wargame of all time. Combines elements of a fantasy adventure sub-plot within a well architected wargame. Rules can be tough to crack. I would suggest playing the introductory game a few times, per the suggestion in the rules. My one gripe is that I really wish the units had been colored differently. Common sentiment. Be prepared for a time investment, but it's worth it.

UPDATE: I have played it nine times now, and it still holds at a 10. A further gripe, though, is that the rules are tricky to learn. I would recommend looking through the FAQs, etc, as there are lots of rules that are non-obvious but which affect gameplay out greatly for one side or the other. Remember that if a character dies (which can never happen if they're alone in a region), you lose the character dice associated with them. For instance, for Gandalf, Aragorn, Witch King, etc. If the Fellowship gets revealed, they can't end movement in a settlement. Also, the game isn't over until the end of the turn for military victories, so it's possible to lose ground, then gain it back before you will lose the game.

The only flaws preventing me from givin it a 10, is that the figures for different nations are not casted from plastic with different colours, and the fact that rules are so confusing that the FAQ is really-really needed.

I instantly fell in love with this game. The theme is so perfect, the scope so epic yet still managable. It takes longer to learn then your typical Euro, but it is worth it. I love this game so much that I often play it alone when no one else is interested. It's that good.

Great game. After many plays, it still feels fresh and exciting every game. The much-derided dice rolling actually enhances the tension of the game, rather than detracting from the strategy. The expansion ('Battles of the Third Age') actually added nicely to the base game, opening up play rather than just providing needless chrome.

Increased rating after many plays. I want to give this game a 10.... The challenge in this game really goes to the Fellowship player. Evil is slightly favored to win and the Fellowship has the challenge of preventing it. Its as true to the books as any LOTR game will ever get with the added bonus that you will rewrite the details!

I just dont know about this one. I think fiddly and underdeveloped comes to mind. Like, very fiddly, and I usually dont mind fiddly games... Another issue that drives me to distraction is the serious component usability issues: Map areas are too small for the huge amount of minis, and the damn Nazgul are idiotically tall and prone to being knocked over. I found this supremely annoying, and was highly distracted dealing with the miniatures, nazgul, and the disks that one uses to represent armies. I found the components to be so annoying, that I had a hard time liking the game at all. This game should have counters instead of miniatures.

I liked the action dice mechanic, I didnt find it particularily limiting. It made doing things to get more dice mandatory though, so things can get sort of scripted, at least in that regard. To play this game even semi-competently, it is 100% necessary to know both players decks. Strongly suggest reading all the cards before playing, otherwise frustration will set in. Overall, meh.

Okay, the above was my ORIGINAL REVIEW. I still don't like the fiddlyness of the pieces, but I've revised my opinion to calling this game a 10 after playing it more. In fact, this might be the best game I've played in the last decade.

It reminds me of a combination of Twilight Struggle (event cards) and Axis & Allies (streamlined battling of model units and such). You wouldn't want to play it unless you are into Lord of the Rings though. Totally cool.

What can I say. Closest to perfect blend of game and theme ever made in fantasy setting, and what a great theme that is too. It doesn't matter if I'm defending Minas Tirith or assaulting the elven woods from Dol Guldur, I'll have a blast every time! Everything from figures to board design and art is high quality too. Tolkien would be proud.

Amazing. First time will take 9 hours to play.(3 hours to learn the rules) Second time will take 5. This is a must have for LOTR fans. Best two player war game! - No contest.

There really isn't enough that you can say about this game. It is different every time you play it, it is not luck dependant, you always feel like you are "in" it, and the theme is not only good, it is perfectly suited. Lots went into this game and you can get lots out.

This is a beautiful and high quality game. It is simple, plays fast, and has a high degree of player interaction which keeps all players in the game the whole time. While it doesn't necessarily follow the books, this game manages to deliver an enjoyable narrative that could hardly be more evocative of Tolkien's world. The game is fairly well balanced, and the expansion seems to further the balance.

-----
Added notes on the BotTA expansion to that game's page. I would say ultimately that game balance is better without the expansion elements. Better yet, just go with the second edition.
