Acquired at a UK Games convention in October 2004.

Great fun it is too - loads of variables to conjure with, especially for the free peoples player.

The rules aren't anything like as daunting as they first look!

What's impressive is how well it simulates the dynamics going on in Tolkien's masterworks. As the free people's player you stand a negligible chance of winning a military victory but you can pose just enough of a military threat to "distract" the eye player's attention from the fellowship providing you think laterally, keep the fellowship moving and are prepared to take a few risks.

Sure, it's imbalanced in favour of the shadow player but I don't have a problem with that - makes it feel true to the books.

I'm gonna have to paint those figures some time...

After 18 plays I upgraded my rating to a 10. It gets better every time I play it and I find it difficult to imagine not enjoying this wonderful, wondrful game.

A great thematic experience. With the action dice and the cards available you must create a strategy to make your side win, and it feels like a story closely related to Lord of the Rings, but with enough differences and nuances to make it interesting.

Great game, but probably a bit over-hyped as it does have some flaws. Its a great design and covers the subject matter beautifully. The components are top notch. This would be a 10 if the designers would have tried a little harder to make it easy to play. Its a risk-esque combat system where you roll trying to get 5s to hit. That sort of game should be easy to figure out straight out of the box. This game isn't. If it gets reprinted with some of the niggling issues fixed, this could be a 9.5 easily.

Really fantastic game with a lot of strategic depth. The rules aren't as bad as people make them out to be, but in places they seem overly complicated for what the results are (for example, the political rules for activating) The icons tell you nothing, the pieces are more difficult to tell apart than they need to be, and there is some gameyness to some of the decision making because of the countermix. (Example: too few elf regulars) Also, it seems with the super-simple combat rules, it wouldn't have been too difficult to differentiate the units somehow? Why can't elves get some bonus in forest, dwarves in mountains, etc. Also, many of the fellowship members special abilities seem very bland. They could have been sexed up a bit, which would have made a FP victory more possible. Hopefully the expansion will fix these problems.

I also think its too long for what it is, mostly because you know who is going to win part way through in some games. The action dice seemed neat at first, but really don't constrain your choices that much, and when they do you feel like you've been cheated by lady luck. Still, a beautiful game thats a lot of fun. I'll definitely pick up the expansion at some point.
Don't get me wrong!!! This game is tons of fun, and deserves every bit of the rating I give it. No CRT, plays fast for a wargame of this scale, and the card and dice combination keeps things interesting. The pieces are all absolutely gorgeous and I could see myself playing this game every day for a couple of weeks without getting bored. I agree with folks that say that the icons on the board and bits are impossible to decipher, but I think in a way it adds to the charm of the game. The game adds for a lot of different strategies on both sides which is a huge plus for a 2 player wargame that isn't based on scenarios.

UPDATE: In anticipation of this thing getting redone (likely in 2008) with the new parts from the expansion, painted minis, and probably some other new stuff thrown in, I've traded this game. I'm excited about getting the deluxe edition with the expansion stuff in it. My next step will be getting a signed "Bill the Pony" card from Kris Hall.

For someone wanting an afternoon immersed in Tolkien's world, there isn't a better wargame out there. It has serious flaws for someone not really interested in the theme, but for someone interested it's excellent. I enjoy this game regardless of if I win or lose, it's just a fun story. The production values are just through the roof - the miniatures are wonderful.

Acquired in 2005. Total number of plays = 79, slightly less than half with the Twilight expansion. In the last two years I've gone back to the base game without using Twilight. This is one of my favourites since I'm a huge Tolkien fan. The game really exudes theme and I find myself immersed in every game. The story arc of the game, is just excellent!

Lovely looking game themed on the War of the Ring. Players represent the Fellowship against the Shadow Alliance. This breaks down into Elves, North, Dwarves, Gondor and Rohan up against Isengard, Mordor and Haradrim/Easterlings. Dice are tossed that generate actions, akin to being dealt a hand of cards in a card driven wargame. Actions are spent on recruiting, campaigning, playing events or on the ring game. The ring game is an abstracted journey from Rivendell to Sauron's Smithy, with Sauron dogging the footsteps and tossing corruption at the Fellowship. Sauron is trying to recover the ring or win a military victory before the ring is destroyed. Some issues with the graphics on the board - the town/city/fortress icons are too small, too alike, and disappear as soon as you plonk a few units down - I'm painting up some wooden houses so at least we can see them. The event cards donate 50% of their area to ornate bordering, with the important text crammed into tiny 5 point font in the remaining 50% - a shame. Still, the gameplay is superb. The designers obviously understand the book, as all the pressures of force and time are here, and it's been superbly developed into a balanced, thematic game. This game is a must for Tolkien fans, and worth a try for anyone else. Great effort.

Second edition (from ARES) is here and fixes several problems - much better graphics and cards you can actually read. My favourite game, by quite a margin.

What constantly amazes me about 'War of the Ring', every single time, is it's perfect balance and multitude of options. The game mechanics are built in such away as to keep the tension throughout the entire game, with checks-and-balances for both the Shadow Player and the Free People. This is a game that no one should pass on.

I really had a great time playing this, and I look forward to playing again. It was a bold design choice in this age of streamlined European games and I applaud the result. Sometimes it's nice to just hunker down and play a beautiful game with moderately complex rules, especially when all the exceptions to the rules make sense and enhance gameplay. Like all good games, this one will continue to get better each time it's played.

Right now, this is my all-time favorite game. I love the mechanics, the theme, the cards, the pieces, the dice-- everything about it. Sure the type is small on the cards and the figures are oddly colored, but damn can some people on this site bitch about mundane things.

The point is this game is extremely fun, and I plan to play it for years to come.

Who can play? Uber-geeks. 2 players.

Absolutely the best Lord of the Rings game for a couple of geeks that want to sink that ring in Mount Doom or wreak havoc with orcs and nazgul. The game is assymetrical, so the Fellowship player is on an adventure to Mordor while the Shadow player is waging a risk-style wargame to destroy Middle Earth. More than any other geek-fest this is the one I can't get enough of.

Gorgeous, epic game if you don't mind the randomness of the dice and cards ... which I don't. The theme is reflected VERY well in this game. The game isn't particularly easy to teach or learn, because the rulebook isn't one of the best I've read.

It will take a couple of games to really get the hang of it. This game however, is worth all the effort.

The map can get cramped, and the Nazgul are clumsy, but otherwise fantastic production.

Got this last year with some Christmas money, and finally got around to learning how to play it. Wow! I can now understand the buzz that surrounds this game. I feel I'm still in the learning phase with this title, but the different game nuances this affords is creative, strategic, and enjoyable. I was a little leery about buying a game that has the same standard goal each play, but have come to realize that the randomness of cards, the dice rolls, and the opponent's strategies definitely up the level of replayability. I look forward to playing this again and again. It doesn't hurt that I love the Tolkien stories. [Christmas gift]

An outstanding game. The execution of theme within this game is beyond words. You really feel like you are in the Lord of the Rings novels. I actually feel like I'm in the stories while playing this game. You can have real tension as the ring bearer trying to get to Mordor. The military situation is balanced very well, so that the free people can just have a hope of holding on long enough to win. So many decisions and different paths to follow to victory (or defeat). One of my favorite games of all time.

4/1/2008 - Well after long consideration, I have decided to give this game my only 10 rating (at this time). I consider this game an absolute masterpiece.

I suspect I've overrated this game, but it's hard to fault a game that gets the epic feel of LotR right. It doesn't do everything right, but I can't imagine how one could make an epic strategy game of the war of the ring that does things better than this. The feeling of being the Free People's player, watching the armies of Sauron bear down on you, all the while struggling to move the ring forward, trying to hide what you're doing and buying the time to get the ring to Mount Doom is fantastic. The event cards generally capture key events from the book well, allowing exciting reversals for both sides. It does seem a little unbalanced, but then things weren't really balanced in the books, so this hardly bothers me.

What captures the feel of Tolkien's universe and condenses it into anywhere from 2 to 4 hours of nail-biting, fantastical action, where the Free Peoples hang by a thread as the armies of Sauron march across the landscape, pillaging and burning? If you said the Peter Jackson movie adaptation of the trilogy, then you'd be right! If you said War of The Ring, you'd also be right! I have yet to encounter a game wherein the universe/theme translates as well as this one does. Every game I play simply amazes me. The only problem I've ever had with this game is the totally disorganized rulebook, which can be realistically called an editor's nightmare. But if you take the time to learn WOTR from someone who knows how to play, then you will find it "goes down easy."

If you ever see me at a Con and you WANT to learn how to play this incredible game, I'll gladly teach you.

Update: Now an owner of the 2d edition, the only issue remaining is an option for cardboard chits rather than miniatures, but that's a minor point. The new cards are much better, and even help your determine priority when there are conflicts. I love this game!

[1st Ed] I have played this beauty of a game over 70 times now and I still get immense satisfaction from playing competitive opponents. There are lots of things to love about this game but a few things have increasingly annoyed me:
1. I dislike the stupid, childish miniatures! Just give me nicely drawn cardboard chits.
2. It gets harder to read those cards.
3. We need an official master rule book with all the FAQs already answered. Its gets tiring looking in various places to get answers, and every game I have to look something up. I've decided to lower my rating because the rules are difficult to understand.
4. I am definitely not a fan of FFG style games.
