It's long, the board is too big yet many of the regions are too small, the pieces need to be distinguished better, and it is altogether pretty fun!

Upgraded to a 10, but that's mainly for the Collector's Edition, which makes the game much more playable from a logistics standpoint and includes the expansion.

>I won as the FP. Yay!

Great game to play once in a while (for us, being about 4 hours to play). Captures the theme nicely.
Played 4.5 times as FP & have yet to win. Not sure if FP are harder to play or whether I just suck.

You definitely get more from it if you're a Tolkien nut.

If you are a fan of the books or movies, and you like intense, two player strategy games, I think you will love this game. It does a wonderful job of capturing the feel of the conflict, and it's beautifully asymmetric, yet balanced.

A very fun game that requires a lot of strategy. This game is far from simple and needs a good amount of time to play, but it is well worth it.

Wow. Right now there's no game I'm more consumed with. This is by far my favorite wargame of all time. Combines elements of a fantasy adventure sub-plot within a well architected wargame. Rules can be tough to crack. I would suggest playing the introductory game a few times, per the suggestion in the rules. My one gripe is that I really wish the units had been colored differently. Common sentiment. Be prepared for a time investment, but it's worth it.

UPDATE: I have played it nine times now, and it still holds at a 10. A further gripe, though, is that the rules are tricky to learn. I would recommend looking through the FAQs, etc, as there are lots of rules that are non-obvious but which affect gameplay out greatly for one side or the other. Remember that if a character dies (which can never happen if they're alone in a region), you lose the character dice associated with them. For instance, for Gandalf, Aragorn, Witch King, etc. If the Fellowship gets revealed, they can't end movement in a settlement. Also, the game isn't over until the end of the turn for military victories, so it's possible to lose ground, then gain it back before you will lose the game.

It reminds me of a combination of Twilight Struggle (event cards) and Axis & Allies (streamlined battling of model units and such). You wouldn't want to play it unless you are into Lord of the Rings though. Totally cool.

Great game, but probably a bit over-hyped as it does have some flaws. Its a great design and covers the subject matter beautifully. The components are top notch. This would be a 10 if the designers would have tried a little harder to make it easy to play. Its a risk-esque combat system where you roll trying to get 5s to hit. That sort of game should be easy to figure out straight out of the box. This game isn't. If it gets reprinted with some of the niggling issues fixed, this could be a 9.5 easily.

Really fantastic game with a lot of strategic depth. The rules aren't as bad as people make them out to be, but in places they seem overly complicated for what the results are (for example, the political rules for activating) The icons tell you nothing, the pieces are more difficult to tell apart than they need to be, and there is some gameyness to some of the decision making because of the countermix. (Example: too few elf regulars) Also, it seems with the super-simple combat rules, it wouldn't have been too difficult to differentiate the units somehow? Why can't elves get some bonus in forest, dwarves in mountains, etc. Also, many of the fellowship members special abilities seem very bland. They could have been sexed up a bit, which would have made a FP victory more possible. Hopefully the expansion will fix these problems.

I also think its too long for what it is, mostly because you know who is going to win part way through in some games. The action dice seemed neat at first, but really don't constrain your choices that much, and when they do you feel like you've been cheated by lady luck. Still, a beautiful game thats a lot of fun. I'll definitely pick up the expansion at some point.
Don't get me wrong!!! This game is tons of fun, and deserves every bit of the rating I give it. No CRT, plays fast for a wargame of this scale, and the card and dice combination keeps things interesting. The pieces are all absolutely gorgeous and I could see myself playing this game every day for a couple of weeks without getting bored. I agree with folks that say that the icons on the board and bits are impossible to decipher, but I think in a way it adds to the charm of the game. The game adds for a lot of different strategies on both sides which is a huge plus for a 2 player wargame that isn't based on scenarios.

UPDATE: In anticipation of this thing getting redone (likely in 2008) with the new parts from the expansion, painted minis, and probably some other new stuff thrown in, I've traded this game. I'm excited about getting the deluxe edition with the expansion stuff in it. My next step will be getting a signed "Bill the Pony" card from Kris Hall.

Who can play? Uber-geeks. 2 players.

Absolutely the best Lord of the Rings game for a couple of geeks that want to sink that ring in Mount Doom or wreak havoc with orcs and nazgul. The game is assymetrical, so the Fellowship player is on an adventure to Mordor while the Shadow player is waging a risk-style wargame to destroy Middle Earth. More than any other geek-fest this is the one I can't get enough of.

An outstanding game. The execution of theme within this game is beyond words. You really feel like you are in the Lord of the Rings novels. I actually feel like I'm in the stories while playing this game. You can have real tension as the ring bearer trying to get to Mordor. The military situation is balanced very well, so that the free people can just have a hope of holding on long enough to win. So many decisions and different paths to follow to victory (or defeat). One of my favorite games of all time.

4/1/2008 - Well after long consideration, I have decided to give this game my only 10 rating (at this time). I consider this game an absolute masterpiece.

Update: Now an owner of the 2d edition, the only issue remaining is an option for cardboard chits rather than miniatures, but that's a minor point. The new cards are much better, and even help your determine priority when there are conflicts. I love this game!

[1st Ed] I have played this beauty of a game over 70 times now and I still get immense satisfaction from playing competitive opponents. There are lots of things to love about this game but a few things have increasingly annoyed me:
1. I dislike the stupid, childish miniatures! Just give me nicely drawn cardboard chits.
2. It gets harder to read those cards.
3. We need an official master rule book with all the FAQs already answered. Its gets tiring looking in various places to get answers, and every game I have to look something up. I've decided to lower my rating because the rules are difficult to understand.
4. I am definitely not a fan of FFG style games.

This has got to be the grand-daddy of all Lord of the Ring games. It's magnificent in its implementation. Sauron must balance search for the ring with military pressure, the Fellowship must balance speed of the route to Mordor with the growing military threat.
Awesome. (though long !)

Wow. I had this game for over a year without playing it due to the mess that is a rule book (something I've come to expect from FFG). I almost walked away without ever playing for this reason. I am so glad I spent the hours wading through the non-indexed and poorly organized rules for what has turned out to be an amazing gaming experience that perfectly reflects what is meant by the term THEME. This is not just a game... this IS the War of the Ring. It reminds me of what all the other Euro games I play are missing. A heart and soul. A masterpiece that improves with each additional playing.

Absolutely beautiful pieces, outstanding value on components, excellent play which really captures the spirit of the books -- one of the best games I've played. Watch out for the weight however if you're coming from eurogames. Wargamers will have no problems with weight, but some may be disappointed with the lack of detail in the fairly abstracted combat system.

My review is here.

Ignoring the theme, this is already a tough, excellent game, which presents agonizing decisions involving the dual-purpose cards and innovative mechanism of action dice. Add on the Lord of the Rings theme, and this game is an automatic 10, because the theme is integrated so seamlessly, so beautifully with the mechanisms. Look through your discard piles after you finish the game, and you can visualize an alternative history of Middle-Earth that is different from what you know, yet entirely plausible. I have seen the theme fester on the emotions of the players: both players start out joking about the theme and noting how cool it is as they do things that just "make sense". Then the chatter dies a slow and eerie death as the shit hits the fan. The FP player feels the tension first, the despair of a defensive war fought on too many fronts and with too little in reserve, and the frustration of the dice going horribly wrong in a siege (the FP player always gets REALLY moody midway during the game). This culminates in an ultimate crisis of faith when he realizes there's no way in hell he's going to win. Then he remembers Frodo and Sam with renewed urgency. All this sound familiar? This roller-coaster of emotions will happen to the FP player in the game, no matter how prepared you are for it. Soon later, the Shadow player feels a different sort of tension, an annoyance at that little Fellowship cockroach evading capture time and again and bringing your bomb closer, and impatience at those unexpected delays you keep incurring while trying to gain that decisive victory and break. That. Stronghold.

The genius of the game is the asymmetry of the two sides perfectly capturing the situation in the novels and movies. This is a war fought on two fronts - the military domination of Middle-Earth and the hunt for the Ring - with each side having the initiative in one of them, and an outside chance at a secondary victory if the opponent screws up. The Free Peoples start in disarray, reluctant to fight, while the Shadow is able to muster its full strength early, yet must step carefully to avoid provoking the Free Peoples to band together. The fascinating concept in the divergent goals is that of time. Both sides possess a ticking time bomb which they attach to the other at the start of the game, and the loser is the side whose time runs out first. The Shadow player tightens the temporal noose through military victories, while the FP player challenges the Shadow player to quickly level those surprisingly resilient strongholds through movement of the One Ring. Both sides have limited capability to extend their time limit a little bit for some breathing room: the FP through hapless defenses barely thrown together in the nick of time; and the Shadow through a focus on the Ring and a blighting on the probable path the Fellowship is taking. But do not be tempted to simply react and forget your goal. The winner is always he who made his opponent's bomb tick faster.

The struggle of time (or rather, this timeless struggle!) is delicate and snowballs from tiny innocuous actions (or lack thereof). Huge momentum swings happen during the game as the little things done or not done add up through subtle means (mostly through action dice effects). Momentum will swing back and forth 2-4 times in the game, and the key is to seize that pendulum and never let it go again.

In no other game is the flow of war so drastic, so devastating, and so riveting. "Game" doesn't do War of the Ring justice. This is an epic.

5+5

Really, I should dock this 0.5 because of some questionable decisions regarding the components, and because this version can suck it next to my COLLECTOR'S EDITION.

Awesome game. Excellent bits and board, very immersive. It is probably my favorite 2-player game, and it is THE definitive Lord of the Rings game. If you want an epic Lord of the Rings gaming experience, this game cannot be beat.

During the game, both players must allocate their actions between the fellowship of the ring (either finding them or getting them to Mordor) and the War between the Free Peoples and the Shadow. Each nation has their own miniatures and the cards do a very good job of reenacting situations (or possible situations) from the books. The action dice are a cool part of the game that can force you to alter your strategy a bit, but still gives you a ton of choices.

I love the full game, but also enjoy a variant on the intro game I made that cuts out the cards (thus, cutting play time in half) and is more balanced than the original (broken) quick-play rules.
