I knew the game from playtesting and loved the gameplay, now that I had a chance to see the actual components, and they match the quality of the design, I think that the perfect score is well deserved (except maybe the lobster orcs, but this is really trivial in comparison to the quality of the figures!)

Absolutely Fantastic Game!

Cons:
Lengthy setup (60 minutes)
Not good for new gamers(complicated rules)
Steep learning curve (even for advanced gamers)
Can be lengthy to play a session (2-6 hours depending on risks taken)

Pros:
Beautiful components and board
Once the rules are understood on both sides, this game plays very smoothe.
Outstanding 1 v 1 wargame. Best ive played in my opinion.
Strategies, replayability, and decisions are endless.
Theme is outstanding, and the game can easily be recapped as a wonderful story afterwards with heroic deaths, locations and often similiarties to the books/movies.

I would only recommend this game to experienced gamers who enjoy war games and have tiem to site down for a lengthy session.

This game balances thematic elements with euro style mechanics as well as war game mechanics.
It is hard to describe the feeling one gets when playing War of the Ring. I can't imagine a game that captures the feeling of being the Free Peoples Army or the Shadow better than this. It is truly an amazing game.

Played this beast for the first time and it did not disappoint, sure, getting your head around the rules is a legendary feat but worth your while and the the rules are at least coherent and not badly written (like so many other games). It seems there are much more possible strategies than meet the eye and I quite like the idea of tactics being shaped through the random card draws (although I think there should have been a few more). A deep and engaging game. I love the theme (Tolkien !) and I think nothing needs to be said about the artwork and miniature etc. While not the most efficient (the map can be confusing and the figures look alike in parts), they are gorgeous. Brilliant Game. One of my favourites

After several plays, I still give this game a high rating. Different strategies as impacted by the random flow of the cards give high replay value. Many games have come down to the wire. The rules for a few of the cards could have used more clairity, and some of the spaces on the board are too small to hold big armies, but the overall production values are magnificent.

Good: Lots of minis; pretty, mounted map; multiple strategies for both players, flavorful.

Bad: Colors chosen for minis, tiny print on cards.

I'm a big LOTR fanboy. I've been wanting to try this for a while. The minis and production makes this a must have. Waiting for the deluxe edition

Not overly difficult and simplified sequence of play aids assist. Has a good feel which mirrors the various options outlined in the book. The game can come down to a nailbiting finish.

oh good ... thanks to the moderator for removing my "stupid 1s" neutralizing 10 rating ... i have read the rules, seen a lot of websites about this game and am pretty sure this is going to be a hit ... I'm giving it a modest rating of 7 and after buying it i hope to move it higher... Thanks for making this great looking game

Rated on 2 plays so far - 1 with quick rules, 1 with standard rules. I'm not a huge fan of wargames but I really enjoyed the theme of this and the events in the books are really well portrayed. Some careful thought and strategy is required on both sides. Play time can be quite long though.

So now we have seperate entries for WotR first edition, WotR second edition, WotR special edition?

Seriously?

I just don't find this a good game. It's like Risk, but a lot more complex. All this complexity doesn't add to the fun. The tiny models also all have the same color and it's very difficult for those not familiar with LoTR to tell the difference between different races, not to mention that the cards, while thematically excellent, require knowledge of the LoTR universe. The rules are not intuitive and the rulebook is a mess. During the middle of the game, it's getting more clear each turn who's going to win, and then it's a drag until the game ends. You know, like Risk.
