Great Add on for 5-6 players, but not like the cards mechanics, the text style are too hard to see on the map and lose the fun of TAKE THAT!

Very nice expansion.
It's nice to play the game with 5 or 6 players.
The new karakters bring new items in to play.
The camel is our favorite, but he just keeps dropping things on the board.

The ability to expand the number of players up to 6 is a huge plus. The additional components are thematic and add extra wrinkles of strategy to the game.

Rattus: Africanus, a new expansion for the 2010 release Rattus, introduces a caravan and diplomats to add more strategic possibilities to the game. What's more, with the introduction of region cards, players will have more control on possible outbreaks of the Black Death.

In addition to making Rattus feel like a completely new gaming experience, Rattus Africanus makes it possible to play the game with up to six players.

It's great to have the option to play Rattus with five or six players, and the game seems to work okay at those player counts. I haven't felt the need to try using the region cards yet and I wish the new class cards didn't use the region cards as much. The Caravaner (which uses the camel piece) is one of my favorite roles in all of Rattus.

Just to be able to expand the game to 6 players makes me happy. I'm not big on the cards, they seem a bit gimmicky, but the new roles that don't use the cards are great! I love Rattus.

The option to add more players is nice, even if it adds more chaos to an already chaotic game. I like the theme of this expansion and there's some fun new roles. If you're already a Rattus fan, this is a good addition, otherwise, it probably won't change your mind.

I like the ability to expand this to 5 or 6 players, but given that this game is naturally tight in terms of points - especially with more players - the 4 points for diplomats seems to be too much. That fear caused me to downgrade this a little.

Expands the game to 6, introducing a new board, and new roles such as the caravaneer (move a camel to add an extra cube of your own) and diplomat (place discs under your cubes for bonus points at scoring).

Out in the desert without shelter or water, oh wait there is a caravan. The plague has expanded to the Desert, with more players and an extra character class. Less is more in the case of the original game. A tight four player game with short waiting times, perfect length and a lot of enjoyability. If you play with more players then the original 4 players, waiting time for your turn takes too long. On top of that the balance of characters is distorted, if you play with less then 5 players, a character class is removed and with 5 or more there will be 2 of one character class. I ask you were is the balance of the original! In terms of the logistics, the location cards make little thematic sense. I understand it is to make the new map a small world, but when the map size was perfect in the original, why mess with it. A caravan isn't enough in this big world to make it work! I came in with lots of enthusiasm for this game, but was left lost in the desert. The new colour for the fifth and sixth player were nice though.

Didn't make the cut as it was taken away in a caravan for retirement, along with the dead horse.

Playing with 6 people slows the game down, and it's not a game which rewards long duration with satisfying strategic choices, but it is nice to have the option of playing with larger groups. The roles cards are not particularly exciting, and the introduction of Region Cards adds very little. More strategic choices are offered by the other expansion Mercatus. This is only really worth getting if you will play regularly with 5-6 people.

Is this the expansion too much? For me it is. Piep Piper was good as you can randomize your characters. I don't have the need to play this game with 5 or 6 and the Islam-class doasn't add much.

I wish the new board could be used with less than 5 players. New characters, new Islamic class, and cards. Not a bad edition but Pied Piper added more bang for the buck unless you need the 5/6 player stuff from Africanus.

To be honest, I think I would have preferred an expansion of just more role cards. The board expansion isn't bad, but it's only used when 5 or 6 players are in the game, and for a game like this, that's more chaos than I like to take place in my games. I think the cards are a nice balancing mechanism, in that you can protect yourself from some of the bad when it's not your turn, but I'm not sure I like that you only get a few, and only a couple of the roles allow you to get more. Modifying the plague movement rules for more players makes sense, so I can't complain there, but I think the expansion changes a little too much to make it worthwhile for me. I'll probably try scaling back a little from what I don't like about it to see if I can make something more useful out of this expansion.

Rattus was a pleasant surprise after a day of gaming. Rules were light and concept was similar to many other Euro-type games, so it was easy to adapt and therefore be competitive. Played this as a 5-player.

Initial Rating: 6.0 (May 2015)

As I like the base game, it is no surprise that I like this expansion. Rattus Africanus adds three aspects to the game. I love one, I'm indifferent to the other and the last one I'm not sure if it's an improvement or not.

I love that the expansion comes with additional characters, this is what I really like because it adds a lot to the game without changing the core rules. Many of my favorite games share this feature (Dungeon Twister, Dominion, Neuroshima Hex).

I'm indifferent about the region cards, I'm not sure if they are really needed and I didn't have any fun playing with them. It it's pure luck if you can use one of them to defend, but you can plan to win some VPs with them at the end of the game. Also, if the right character isn't in play you won't have the chance to draw more cards.

The third aspect that this expansion adds it's a higher player count. I almost always find this to be a mistake (my favorite player count is two). I'm not sure about the new player count but I'm willing to play it with five or six players (once) to really see but I think I won't like it. I feel it adds too much chaos to an already chaotic game AND the downtime would be excessive for such a simple game. Another small disappointment in this regard is that the new board (Africa) can only be played with 5-6 players :/.

The game components are very good.

Bottom line, Rattus Africanus is an ok expansion. To be perfectly honest, I would have preferred an expansion of only new role cards. I will play again soon to see if the Region Cards appeal to me.
