Free and fun, so you can't complain. It's unbalanced, though, as even the rules themselves say, because it's supposed to teach you about how fossil fuel usage adversely affects the climate! The environmental "facts" included on the rule-book contain no citations, though.

Wow. Dynamic and refreshing. The game ia quicker with this expansion (the oil allows for faster development) and there is a real threat of the ecological disaster looming over the heads of players. And in case it happens, all participants lose.

Possibly my favorite Settlers expansion in existence. This is seriously fun and I wonder why more people don't mention it. It's FREE if you want it, so for Catan fans this should be a no brainer to try!

adds a extra resource that fits well
also the negative effects are fun and play well

oil might be too valuable but I haven't played where one player is seriously behind in oil so I don't know for sure. And well its oil so that would kinda makes sense.

Excellent expansion of Settlers. Added on some interesting new elements that I wouldn't mind playing whenever we pull out the game.

Parts: Dices, Card boards.
Comments: Very good small extension for the island of Catan only missing the expansion cars & planes.

Another cheap and fun scenario to throw in every once in a while. Although I will not be using this as much as Fisherman, Barbarian Invasion and/ or Traders & Barbarians.

Adds an aggressive resource that can reduce cities to settlements and settlements to nothing and even remove numbers through natural disasters. Heavy handed about the real life consequences of using oil but great game fun.

a ideia é muito boa.
só não gostei:
a) do desequilíbrio se usado o set up aleatório.
b) da frustração de não querer/puder usar mais petróleo quando faltam poucos desastres para terminar o jogo.

This is a nice take on the basic Catan game, with new resources that can reward you nicely, so long as you don't overdo it and force everyone to lose the game. After one play, I'm not sure how balanced it is, but there's definitely a "pro industry versus pro environment" thing going on in the game, with valid reasons to pursue one or the other (or even one against the other). It's still Catan, but the variations here will provide the hardcore fans another reason to go back and play it again with some fresh ideas. I don't expect it's going to replace any of the other scenarios or expansions, though.

12/03/11 Played a three-player game of Settlers using this variant. I found this Oil Springs variant a pleasant one, it reminded me of a scenario in my Das Buch, called The Hurricane, I believe. In that variant coastal flooding is also a danger, but players can build dikes to protect their production hexes and settlements/cities. Since I have that I'd never buy Oil Springs, but I'd certainly play it again.

Adds a doom track and a good example of the Catch 22 of oil use: Expand and win Vs total armageddon! Speeds up the game due to the value of the oil and the potential for premature game end. Good fun though play is quite volatile.

Using the oil brings great good and significant bad - heightening both ends of the spectrum. If players want a peaceful game without controversy, this is not the expansion to play. For tense choices and higher action, this is a good addition.

Interesting variant. Recommend only playing if you have Fisherman scenario. It turns placing settlements and cities on the coast which already a fairly poor idea into a completely suicidal one. Fisherman helps create incentive to mitigate this. The idea of a Catan where everyone can lose is enough to give it a try.

Fun and interesting for a new wrinkle in Settlers of Catan. However, when the number tokens start coming off the board, people (including me) start getting discouraged. Sequestering oil is a viable win strategy. The sole person who did that gained 4 victory points doing that.

I've played this numerous times. I always have a great time playing it but i wouldn't recommend adding it to all my games. Gives a nice feel of how oil use can have negative affect to the earth but does it in a way that doesn't preach its message too strongly.

A particularly clever means of diversifying resources and adding environmental consciousness your game of Catan. An easy add to any base version of the game.

Available for print and play, this is not an essential thing but if you want to spice up your Catan games by adding an oil resource, it does add a modicum of depth to a game that is considered dry. Of course I say this without owning any of the actual expansions.

Losing vanilla resources to gain oil does give one a bit of flexibility. But the fact that using that oil sets back your developments coupled with lower amount of "safe" resources to use means it takes a very long time to get to the 12 VP required by the scenario. I'll not be rushing back to play this one soon.

Adds far too much chaos to an already chaotic game. You can win by storing a bunch of oil early and then causing global catastrophe. An excellent lesson for future CEOs of BP.

Building on th cost is a risk. If you build there you take the risk loosing a settlement. But you can also lose a resource somewhere on the board and you have no defence against that. I don`t like this.
