Makes the game less brutal which is a plus in my books. Especially good to use when you are teaching this game to a bunch of noobs.

This opens things up for the architect especially, but also the patron and laborer because more cards go to the pool. For 2-player, I think this is a great way to play.

The Republic version is the lighter version of GtR. The pool is frequently flooded, it is easy to get just about any kind of client you want mid-game (due to ease of petitioning). No Colosseum. Imperial version is my favorite.

It's forgivable when expansions have slightly different card colors. But, these have different card sizes. Despite this disappointment, I'm eager to try the cards.

I think I prefer the Republic variant more than the original. Not starting with a Jack and dropping the petition to 2 cards are good changes. The additional power to the Architect and Legionnaire is also good.

Haven't played Imperium vs Republic enough to gauge which one I like better, nor close enough together to even see any differences. Experienced players should find the differences obvious. So I'll give them the same rating for now.

A great expansion. It's fun to have new cards but the best thing about them is the very subtle shift that rebalances the craftsman and architect actions. Previously our games had felt dominated by craftsmen and it was quite routine for us to grab two or three craftsmen clients as a bit of a no-brainer. That is no longer how we think and games are far more diverse now in terms of the strategies that we use.

I also welcome the two-card petition. This really mitigates some of the luck of the draw and makes for a more interesting game where there are some really choices to be made about whether to follow or think. Previously we'd have just been thinking as there would not have been an option.

Wouldn't play without this expansion now.

Some alternate buildings for GtR. No less crazy than the originals, but the reduction to 2 cards for a Petition keeps the frustration factor down. Keep an eye on anyone building the Forum Romanum, tough to fulfil, but an instant win if you do!

I've actually only played with this "expansion" instead of the original rules (the rules for this "expansion" are listed in the rulebook for the Black Box edition as the standard rules with the old standard rules being a variant for more difficult games. Follow that?) so I can't compare it to the more difficult rules. But as a still new player I really like these cards that make the game a little more easy and accessible.

Since I am an experienced player, this ruleset and cards are too "simple". We have found that the game moved a lot quicker, and you have easier decisions during your turns.

Still good to introduce new players, but I prefer to play with Imperium rules. (original rules)

It's hard to rate this, since I haven't played the game without it, but when we did play with it, we just shuffled all the cards into the deck instead of replacing other cards with these. But I didn't see anything that detracted from the basic flow of the game, so I don't see why I wouldn't rate it the same as the base game.

OK for new players. Keeps more cards in the pool and weakens the nastiest cards, but, not sure that is better?

Update: Republic is good for beginners, but I really do not like the game this way as much....a huge part of GtR's goodness is playing the pool. Republic rules flood the pool and takes away this important element of the game's original design.

This expansion makes the game a bit more forgiving and accessible for new players, and that's why I would choose to play with the cards with new players. Even with experienced players, it might be added once in a while if you want a less cutthroat game.
I like how the instant-winning condition of the forum has been made harder, as I don't enjoy the games that suddenly ends with an instant winner.

On the other hand, too many cards probably end up in the pool (due to abilities and especially as you can petition with 2 cards instead of 3, i.e. it's going to be used more which brings more cards into the pool). And that's not a good thing, as part of what makes GtR great is "controlling" the pool.

I love Glory to Rome just like it is, and therefore I'm rarely playing with these cards.
