Exactly what an expansion should be. It maintains everything interesting about the base game and adds more choices where previously there were fairly mainline strategies.

The new stuff tends to help out the FP more than the SP, so it may be worth holding off on until the SP is winning somewhat consistently. Certainly not something to add until you are very comfortable with the base game - if you still need to consult the rules more than once in a game you probably shouldn't be throwing BotTA into the mix.

A lot of replayability is added to the game, and the scenarios are awesome. I'm not sure if the scenarios are balaced though (need more plays).

Woohoo! Ents!! This rating is for the "Twilight of the Third Age" expansion for "War of the Ring" (I haven't played either of the stand-alone "Battles of the War of the Ring"). Most of my comments on the game can be found under the "War of the Ring" entry, but I'll just say that this is a very worthwhile expansion. Yes, it adds a few more characters and factions (such as the Ents!) to keep track of and a few more elements to consider, but what is a little bit more complexity in such an already huge, complex game? All that these new additions do is give the players a few new fun options to consider (such as the Ents!), and add just a wee bit more depth to an already very deep game by including a few more elements from the books. You can't go wrong with that! Game design: 4.5/5 Personal enjoyment: 5/5 Total: 9.5/10

The fact that this expansion adds two stand alone games, makes it a great purchase! Both the Rohan and Gondor maps offer just as much fun as the base game, and the additions it adds to the base game are a great addition too!

Some of the base game expansion elements are great, while one or two are just OK. Overall, they make the game much less scripted and I will always use the expansion unless teaching someone new!

The great ones:
Gladriel: In the base game, killing off Gandalf at the first opportunity is practically a non-choice. With Gladriel, you have some more options.

New Witch King: I like having this alternate Witch King that you can bring into play to harass the Fellowship without activating everybody, I do wish there was some way to switch him over to the fighty Witch King later in the game, though. This would also follow the books' narrative nicely.

Ents: It is nice to have these as figures on the board, as it adds a lot of interest to the action around the Fangorn/Orthanic region.

Dunlendings: These give Sauron something to do rather than just bang on Rohan for a while then get creamed by the Ents.

The good ones:
Siege Towers: Give a little more options around siege combat, and a place to spend musters that might otherwise be wasted.

OK:
Smeagol: Not really sure what he adds to gameplay. It is nice for the fellowship to have that extra harmless tile in the bag (kinda balanced by the new Witch King). I think his main purpose is to mix up the Fellowship and prevent the FP player from following the same companion strategy every time. His guide ability is strong, and if the SP can't kill him, will likely save the FP a turn on their trek to Mt. Doom (but if the SP does kill him, get a nice reward - the card that lets them redo a tile draw).

Corsairs: Move too slowly to be of much use. I wish there was a card or two that would shoot them up the coast so that you could use them to dump a bunch of Southrons in the Shire. UPDATE: I have to upgrade my opinion of the Corsairs after my last game. I planted one in Umbar and one in Dol Amoroth, and they were very helpful in helping me quickly shuttle Southron reinforcements into Gondor. They are a bit of an investment to get into place, but once established they are nice to have. Still wish they moved faster or there was a card like Ciridain's ships that would teleport them along the coast.

The stand-alone battle games are decent. They are a nice, more tactical version of the WotR combat system. However, for that type of tactical game there are others I prefer. I would rate the battle games a 7 (could possibly go to 8 with more plays).

Played only the expansion to the base game, and I have to say the additions to the game are outstanding. Really smoothes out the balance and helps the Free Player hold on for a win. Excellent components as always.

More of a great thing. Nice bits, another gorgeous John Howe illustrated map, and a strong field strategic rendition of the two battles that gave the Free Peoples victory over the dark lord. Props to FFG!

Expansion. Two plays of the Battle for Rohan so far. Very enjoyable. Like it's big brother, it will take several plays to become fluent with all the rules but it looks like this will be a great game.

Twilight expansion is also a very nice upgrade to the base scenario giving several new options for both sides.

It really does feel that the expansion "completes" the base game. I liked all the additions, and they meshed seamlessly with the base game. The components were of good quality.

I have not yet played the stand alone battles, but these look compelling.

I much prefer the individual scenarios to the expansions to the base game. The scenarios are tight and really bring a lot of neat decisions to the system. The action die system works really well at the operation scale as well as the grand strategic, and you still have a lot of the same great tension that you get in the base game. It's also more effective to play thematically as the Shadow, and there's lots of extra stuff in the box, both in terms of components, and in terms of gameplay.

The expansion to the base game is nice for a few balance tweaks, though none of my opponents or I ever played antithematically enough that we went for the Dale/Erebor/Woodland Realm strategy as the Shadow. The expansion compensates for that strategy by giving some nice perks to the Free Peoples, but this seems to railroad the Shadow into going after the very strategy that the expansion helps to nerf.

Adds content and balance to the base game. Never even played the Rohan and Gondor mini-games and still rate it high.
