An expansion for Battlelore chock-full of cards, a few banners and terrain tiles.

Call to Arms introduces a form of semi-random set-up for Battlelore scenario's. For this purpose, it comes with six decks of seven Deployment cards. There's two ways to use these card: the simple Impromptu mode or the slightly more involved Organized mode.

In Impromptu mode, you pick one of the three Deployment card decks for your side and draw four cards from it. You deploy three of those cards to a section of your choice (the card shows you in which hexes to put your units). From the fourth card, you get to pick two units as reserves which you deploy on one of your empty baseline hexes. The player with the most green banner units becomes the starting player. Then you form your War Council, as detailed in the Battlelore rules and you're good to go.

Organized mode lets you shuffle together any two Deployment card decks, so you'll draw your four cards from a fourteen card deck. Setup then continues much the same as Impromptu mode and then both players get to select two (out of ten included) Specialist cards. These are upgrades to your army (like replacing your bows with longbows, replacing regular units with mercenaries, or allowing you to take an extra unit from your reserves card). Other Battlelore expansions come with Specialist cards (though no Deployment cards) for their included units.

At first, this lack of control may seem a bit dissapointing. But on second thought, I think it fits perfectly within Battlelore's design philosophy. Just like you don't have full control over your battlefield orders (the fog of war created by the Command Cards) you don't exactly know which forces your feudal lords will have levied to form your army. So Call to Arms is actually a very thematic way of setting up a Battlelore game.

The expansion itself comes with 6 new scenario's, but players are encouraged to use the maps from existing scenario's, or come up with their own designs. There's new terrain tiles as well: Cliffs (like elevated terrain, except you can't move, retreat or attack through the cliff sides of the hexes), Marshes (unit moving in must stop, units battle into and out of a marsh with a maximum of 2 dice) and Archers Stakes (may only be placed on countryside or elevated terrain hexes, units moving onto them must stop and may not battle - except archers - and archers may ignore one bonus strike result (in melee) and one flag result rolled against them while on Archers Stakes).

A necessary purchase to give Battlelore infinite replayability, even without adding other expansions, this one is a must-have if you own Battlelore. Combine it with BattleLore: Epic BattleLore, and the fun increases exponentially.

Bought for about $20. An excellent expansion that changes the unit setup at the start of the game, and allows use of specialist units. The subsequent expansions include cards for this expansion. I have played through all of the scenarios on my own.

My first impression is that the card based army deployment system is pretty cool, in that while it doesn't offer much customization, it does allow some, and gets you into the action pretty quickly.

LIKE
- Finally a system to play games on custom maps.
DISLIKE
- Extend the already long setup time.
- New terrain are nice, but don't add much.
- Specialist cards add an overhead that cancel out the advantage.
VERDICT
For the price, I rather skip this and use my own made up deployment system.

Researching the forums led me to pick up Call to Arms and Epic. I believed these two were almost essential expansions and after having played the base game a few times I am even more convinced.

These expansions increase the replay ability exponentially.

Adds a good deal of expandability to BattleLore by providing a mechanism for random army set-ups (though not for random terrain--see my variant for that). Also worth having some more terrain tiles (swamp and cliff).

Personally love the CtA system. Maybe doesn't give you the control that a point-system would give you, but it has a great theme and gets a thumbs up for originality.

I haven't found the need to use Call to Arms yet, as I like to make do with the initial placements already in the adventure. Maybe this will be essential after I play each scenario a lot of times. Right now, the only use I get out of it is being able to deploy the Hill Giant and Earth Elemental.

One of those "what's missing in the base game sold as an expansion" cases, it makes Battlelore a game you can actually play after you're done with the base scenarios.
