The San Juan expansions are worth the box alone - and the Puerto Rico Nobles are a great add-on. The rest is mere icing on the cake.

I've been on this site for 10 years now, and I'm far from sick of games, but I think I am, to some degree, sick of learning too many new games. I'm also tired of playing 4+ hr multiplayer games, but I'll still happily play really long games 2 player.

[5 plays] of San Juan expansion. [1 play of PR expansion]

Worth every penny even if these are the only 2 games I ever use it for. San Juan has rocked with the new cards. They have become integral to my San Juan experience. The nobles and related building for Puerto Rico are also something I am likely to never go without again. They add a little flavor and extra depth without being any burden.

I am eager to try the Princes of Florence expansion. I don't own any of the other games any longer (Notre Dame and Louis XIV), don't feel the love for ItYotD, and haven't ever played Witch's Brew.

Most recent play 10-16-10 with Michael and Carter.

San Juan Expansion: Excellent addition, especially buildings. Makes San Juan much more strategic as you have more ways to score points and go for victory. Brings base game to new level.

Rating is for the extra buildings for San Juan and the 6th player for Witch's Brew. The former brings new life into a great game that can get a little same-y without it. The latter adds an extra player to a great game that already plays best the more people you have.

The other components of the San Juan and Witch's Brew might be OK but I have no desire to even try them. Adding event cards to a game that normally doesn't have them bugs me, personally.

I haven't tried, and don't have, the others parts of the Alea Treasure Chest, having traded for just these two. But these are so awesome I doubt I'll play without them if I had a choice.

Detailed comments are under the separate expansion entries.

Puerto Rico Expansion: Worthwhile for its ability to shake things up and inject some variety into an over-analysed game, but beware of certain combos. Rating: 9.

Puerto Rico The Nobles: Much better than the first expansion, but still something of a missed opportunity as not all buildings change behaviour when occupied by nobles. Rating: 10.

In the Year of the Dragon Expansion I: The Great Wall of China

In the Year of the Dragon Expansion II: The Superevents

Louis XIV Expansion: The Favorite  7  — This adds a little variety to the game and a few more choices, now that you have the special action board, but it doesn't drastically alter the feel of the game — which is fine by me!

Notre Dame Expansion: New Persons  9  — This is a rather nice set of new grey people to hire. There are a couple that can be rather risky to use, but used back-to-back in tandem, they provide an incredible payoff. I like them! Because the new cards require you to randomly select the 3×A, 3×B, and 3×C, everyone gets to review which nine are in the game before it starts. These new cards inject more replay value into one of the most replayable games I've ever played. Bravo!

The Princes of Florence The Muse and the Princess Expansion  7  — It's an interesting twist to add to the game. It also serves the purpose of adding distraction from the goal, and money drain to the game, which I welcome. The bad part is that each card can be very, very powerful in the right circumstances, so players need to learn the relative values of the characters in those situations. Muse abuse, for example, can catapult a player into the lead....

The Princes of Florence Two Player Rules

Puerto Rico Expansion I: The New Buildings  8.9  Excellent addition to the base game. By randomizing the buildings available, the dynamic from game to game is a refreshing challenge.

Puerto Rico Expansion II: The Nobles  9  — These are a splendid fit. The buildings' conditional functions are a little more difficult to digest at first, but they add quite a dose of freshening to the game.

San Juan Expansion I: The New Buildings

San Juan Expansion II: The Events

Witch's Brew Expansion I: The 6th Player  10  — The 6th player components are perfectly fine and welcome, and the additional potions are perfectly fine. The crow tokens are an excellent addition, so the people who take crow-bearing potions needn't keep them face up. Plus, it's a little easier to see that the crows have flown away than it is to count up to the right number at all times, especially with more players.

Witch's Brew Expansion II: The Amulets  8  — Nice. This adds some more choices to the game, and the amulets are rigged to encourage you to play them. So, being the last person in turn order doesn't guarantee you the "I am..." role. This keeps the suspense higher, as it's not always apparent how each round will play out....

Witch's Brew Expansion III: The Magic Abilities  6  — By giving each player a card, and the start player two extra, drafting your special card for the round is expedited, since only two of the cards are newly passed to you. Nonetheless, it inevitably slows the game a bit. ...especially with 6 players, since you blow through the deck every two sets, which means you just keep seeing the same abilities over and over. Better with fewer players, methinks.

I love, love, love these boxes of small expansions for great games. Ystari did one as well and it was such a welcomed thing to get. So I'll break this down by the ones I've tried and add to them as I've tried them out.

Witch's Brew. This is excellent and should most definitely be used every time you play. I Love the cards that get added as they really shake the game up. The raven tokens are beautiful and make keeping track of the pace of the game very easy.

San Juan. Not bad at all, I think I'll just keep playing with this from here no out. The new buildings are GREAT. The law cards are interesting in that they come out in variable timing but then give more options to the role chooser but none are certainly "Must have's" so they may sit for a round or two. Well thought out to make them not something everyone jumps on or bitches about because they didn't get a shot at something.

Puerto Rico. Very simple addition to the game which adds a good bit. I like the nobles as it makes taking the Mayor role more viable through the game. The new tiles are very interesting as they give bonuses during role actions. Which is very cool.

In the Year of the Dragon. Owned but unplayed as of yet. Traded with base game.

Puerto Rico - New Buildings: These are the same as those published with the Computer Game. I like them for variety.

Puerto Rico - Aristocrats: Extremely cool expansion. You need to adapt your play to the new buildings and colonist type. Mayor has become more important.

San Juan - New Buildings: Very cool buildings which enable new strategies.

San Juan - Events: Some of them are kinda weak, but anyway a cool addition to the game. Especially the Earth Quake gives new possibilities in that you can lengthen the game.

Overall rating based on my experiences with some of the expansions: 9/10

Alea Treasure Chest --

Rating is based solely on the new Buildings for San Juan.

In the base game, if a player happens to get certain powerful card combinations early on, the other players can find their own prospects disheartening. I find that the "New Buildings" expansion moderates that possibility by adding several new cards whose powers provide players with opportunities to overcome that early snowball effect. Additionally, these new cards offer more interesting card combinations. In our gaming group, the expansion breathed new life into San Juan.

Since I own all the games being expanded, this seems great value to me. If you only owned one or two of those games, you might think differently.

San Juan: Great. New buildings & events both shake up the game.
Puerto Rico: Nobles introduce interesting buildings and strengthen Mayor.
Notre Dame: new characters to bribe change many incentives & strategies.
Witch's Brew: Now 6 players, other elements untried.

Rating based on San Juan expansions alone so far. Nice. Worth the price just for those for me. Some of the cards looked imbalancing and the events looked different, but overall I find that they fit into the game very nicely. The quantity of cards weakens traditional strategies a little by dilution, but the new cards open up new ideas so it still feels right. Very nice.

San Juan expansion only.

Want it to be a 10. Brought down to 9 because of slight Discolored Card Backs and Event Cards could have been better.

2 Expansions. Both interesting.

Expansion 1: New Buildings. Excellent. New ways to score. Cards that interact with larger numbers; Cathedral, Guard Office, and smaller numbers; Goldsmith. Slightly new color is a mistake.

Plan to use them all for now; might use variant of switching out some buildings but that adds set-up time and discussion.

Expansion 2: Event Cards. Some benefit, but odd that some give no chooser benefit - they need to be changed.

San Juan:
The new buildings are well designed, alleviating some (perceived) weaknesses and strengths of the original cards. Highly recommended.

In the Year of the Dragon:
The expansion increases the tension even more (could it be done?). Highly recommended.

Notre Dame:
New person cards provide a fresh approach to some strategies. Recommended.

Louis XIV:
Expansion has almost no impact on the game as it is. You may use it or lose it - no big difference.

Puerto Rico:
The first expansion consists of the extra buildings well known from the old Spielbox issue.
The second expansion introduces nobles and a few additional buildings that first and foremost deal with these nobles. After my first game I think that the nobles are probably too strong as there seems to be no drawback picking one over a colonist. Not sure whether this variant is a stayer.

Witch's Brew:
After our first game we didn't like the amulets, since they take away much of the tension of the game.
The magical cards are interesting, although they tend to give away too much of your intentions for the turn.

General Comments:

Puerto Rico: The expansions are great and serve to put some life back into a great game that really suffers from a lack of variety. The first expansion (the one that has made the rounds already) is somewhat uneven, but the second one seems very good.

San Juan: The new buildings are a cheap & easy way to add some more fun to the game. The events are definitely a mixed bag; I would either trim a couple or not use them in future. Great to play San Juan again, reminding me that the game is a top-10 type and quite distinct from Race for the Galaxy or the Puerto Rico board game.

Notre Dame: Pretty innocuous. Doesn't change the game that much. One of the late-game people that gives you big points for pieces in the general supply is quite powerful though and potentially suspect.

Witch's Brew: The 6th player is good. The action cards are OK. The amulets are helpful for a big game. Nice to have, not going to set your world on fire.

Princes of Florence: Adds heft to a game that was already over-hefty. Probably only of interest to the few remaining Princes of Florence die-hards.

Still working my way through the rest Although I do like the look of the In The Year of the Dragon expansions, which look quite interesting.

For me, the San Juan and Puerto Rico expansions are worth the price of admission, and the rest is a bonus.

I am not sure I am thrilled with the idea of bundling expansion, I am guessing to encourage people to buy the missing games. I stop buying Carcasone expansion when they did the King & Scout expansion. That said, I already owned 6 of the 7 and they are some of my favorite games so I was excited.

So how is it, in a word, great. I have played witch's brew, Year of the dragon and POF so far and had already played the PR buildings. I have read all the rules and I love how small they are. They all give a little something without totally changing the rules, very good.

Like the Ystari Treasure Box, I just love the concept of packaging up a bunch of expansions in one box. Of course, Ystari and Alea (via Rio Grande) happen to have published a number of my top-rated games and have an unusually high "hit" ratio in terms of printing games that I like, so this concept probably wouldn't work as well with other publishers. In this case, though, I'm probably going to use all the expansions in this set (with the possible exception of In the Year of the Dragon, which is falling in my ratings a bit), so it gets high marks from me! This would have rated a 9 with me except for the huge number of instances where it's pretty obvious that nobody proofread the cards after they were translated from German (the San Juan cards are literally rendered in broken English in several instances). It's not too hard in most cases to figure out what the card was supposed to say, but at best it's needlessly sloppy and at worst could cause confusion, This could have been avoided by having any high school student look over the text for five minutes ... The new Puerto Rico buildings and Puerto Rico- The Nobels, as well as the new Notre Dame cards, are especially good from this package.
