I'm probably not rational about Race anymore but I love this expansion. The "all chrome" expansion. The prestige adds another way to score. The search mechanic is great. Nothing here for a Race fan to dislike. Each logged play includes all three expansions and the base game.

Adds the prestige mechanic and crazy powers that change the game substantially without distorting its character, adds more interaction and more swingy, aggressive plays. The Prestige/Seach mechanic deals with streakiness, there are major incentives for takeovers, and old and new strategies get huge boosts. Lower-tempo strategies seem to get a bit of a boost, and there are a wider variety of powers which interact with each other in new ways.

The game is more complex and fiddly, and the leader mechanics can suggest strict timing, but old cards and strategies are changed up, and amongst the complexity there are even more tough decisions.

There are some annoying rule interactions that I think are more trouble than they're worth:
* Golden Age doesn't work with takeovers
* gaining goals isn't checked at the end of every phase
* you can't use Imperium Seat and Imperium Invasion Fleet to takeover Rebel Cantina without there being a Rebel Military world to target

46 plays: Mind. Is. Blown. With this expansion's prestige and the search/prestige action they somehow managed to make RftG many times deeper than it already was.

One minor complaint is the reduction of simultaneity. E.g. the Search action; Psi-Crystal World. Another complaint is the prestige leader vp/turn - annoyingly easy to forget unless he also gets a card draw. There also seems to be a runaway leader problem, i never used to feel like i had 0% chance to win until very late in the game, this can now happen much earlier. Note this may be inexperience.

490 plays: My 2nd complaint above is mostly untrue if you follow the rules script. Getting used to the rules script (and getting others to follow it) is another matter...

The runaway leader problem is much less pronounced than it initially seemed.

So yeah, BoW is, for all intents and purposes, gaming perfection.

760 plays (11/2014): still the best Race format of all. Crunchiest; by far the most number of viable strategies of all formats, making it extremely interesting. Probably the most balanced format, but some may disagree.

Only complaint would be power creep. Because of this, you sometimes find yourself out of contention before the final turn, and no one likes kingmaking.

I wouldn't play the game without it (unless teaching the game to someone new).

A fitting conclusion to RftG story arc. Just for veterans though - it raises the complication significantly by introducing the prestige mechanics. Finally the takeovers start to happen regularly. The cards on average seem much more complicated and significantly more powerful than those from the base set, but this feeling may disappear as the 'shiny new toy' effect wears off.

With the addition of the prestige axis the game executes a quantum upshift into the heady and intricate. The experience is best with experienced players, so you're either playing this with the people you've always played with or you're gradually indoctrinating newbs... Don't be in a hurry. So much of this is about knowing the massive deck, the strengths and weaknesses of the various strategies, the probability of ending up with a certain card. (Not to mention being able to intuit which actions will be played to maximize your parasitic benefit while minimizing how much you help your foes.) Jumping straight into the deep end is bewildering and much of what makes the game great will be lost on the drowning man.

The final result is a triumph in every possible way—gorgeous, evocative, vexing and just plain fun.

To paraphrase my friend Jas: Now it feels like a complete game, on par with the heavier Euros.

And I could play it forever.

mb

PS. Keldon's brilliant AI implementation is my go-to digital time-waster—two AI opponents, all expansions, takeovers on. Though it lacks the delicious human element of outguessing, the rest of the experience is deep enough that it doesn't matter. And it's a great way to learn the deck and noodle with crazy strategies.

Love the new cards of course.
The game is a LOT more complicated now, than just the base game, and we have had some large point swings, and some games where you felt to far behind after just a few rounds.

We have already experienced a lot of nice combos, but there is still a lot to explore.

Still, by far, the best game I have ever played.

Outstanding expansion. The cards mix in with the base set and first 2 expansions wonderfully. Prestige adds an excellent element to the game (although the Prestige Leader rules are a touch fiddly) and the Scavengers may possibly be the best start world in the game.

The only thing I was unsure of in previews was the Search/Prestige action card. I'm glad I was wrong about that one because it's the best addition to the game.

UPDATE: The scavengers may not be the best start world as suggested above, but it's certainly one of the most fun.

Third expansion

New mechanic of prestige adds new depth to the game, with the current size of the deck search action is sometimes obligatory. Take-overs happens more often than before, so the interaction is bigger.

Prestige points add a significant new level of play to the game, even if they're only used lightly. The complexity is probably a bit high for a first-time player, but they add a new dimension to evaluating cards and actions during the game. Prestige can be an integral part of a winning strategy, though it's certainly not necessary for victory.

We rarely use the search action given the strength of the prestige action and the continued success of flexiblity as more and more cards have joined the deck. Searching can be a little unpredictable, and it's often better to stay open to multiple strategies.

The continued growth of the deck keeps adding variance that may have weakened the "explore +5" action for fixed strategies that count on a particular card, but in general there are now more overlapping possibilities.

An extension that adds new strategies to the game (Prestige, new cards). The game feels more complete, with it.

Race is definitely one of the finest games ever made, for me: short, varied, streamlined, with difficult but manageable meaningful decisions from the beginning on.

At any point, one must choose a strategy and also think tactically (according to the goals, the cards available in hands, what the opponents are likely to do, where in the game we are,…). There are not too many options (2, 3,…) but they often have a strong impact (they can have very different consequences).

It is the only game, with poker, that makes my heart pump, at times: when I lead or am about to make a big move, I am afraid that my opponent is going to pass in front of me with a big move of his own before the game ends. It is really a race to the finish, where the leader is wishing that the finish line were closer, where seeing the leader too close to the finish line can give a delightful and excruciating image of one's possible future defeat—but we must keep running, towards the end, bigger leaps are possible (6-cost developments,…). The fear, the uncertainty drive my adrenaline up.

Another excellent expansion even if the deck is pretty well impossible to shuffle any more! Really like the prestige addition as well as a number of the different cards and added special actions/abilities. The one time use card is interesting as well.
