has some nice additions to an already excellent game. the artists are especially fun, for an alternate way to garner victory points.

Definitely grab this when you get the base game.

I like the options it gives you with extra players, and the modular nature of the additions is perfect. We've always played with the extra research options.

I'm very interested in trying a game where you can only get victory points from art.

This addition to Roads & Boats throws in a bunch of modular mechanics to give the game a ton of flavor. Every added system to the game makes the play that much more interesting. I look forward to a game of Roads & Boats & Cetera where we play a scenario with all the expansion rules thrown in. That nuttiness is exactly my cup of tea.

The addition of a new scoring mechanism is a welcome one. Other than that, it's just more of the same great stuff.

Several of the expansions are quite good, and some not so good. the pieces for the 5th and 6th player are nice, though I doubt I would play with that many again.

Great addition to R&B. The art exhibition scoring option is my favorite addition, as it opens up an entirely different build path. Airplanes are interesting, as the make the whole board feel much smaller. I haven't tried the managers or electricity options yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

That said, I don't find it necessary to play with this expansion all the time, and don't think it's essential. (versus, say, the Pandemic expansion, which I'd prefer never to play without)

I tried railway, planes and bombs. It was fun.
Also tried "technologies" - Fundamental research, Electricity and Managers. They were not so fun as planes and bombs, but they improved output of game economy a lot. Polders are tough, make competitive two player game, if at least one of players take risks.

I want to play with 5-6 players (see update).
Also art show still waiting for me (trade and bid too).

update(28-11-2011):
I have played with 5 players, it was exciting experience, looking for more (upgraded from 9 to 10).

[19.mar.2012] Corrected from 10 to 9, to show that Go & Bridge are better. 9 is maximum now I give to modern boardgames.

[15.apr.2012] I have played 6 player game now too, and it support 6 players quite well, if players are enough experienced.

In my opinion, this really rounds out and "completes" Roads & Boats. Without it, one pretty much pursues the same goal in the same way, apart from the terrain forcing some variation. With the myriad ways you can mix in the &Cetera options, R&B becomes infinitely variable.

If you are a fan of Roads & Boats you will probably want this. A large ziplock bag crammed full of extra rules, scenarios, grey/black pieces for 5/6 players, tiles, producers and goods. Some of the extra rules look great (electricity, managers, planes), some look so-so (polders?). I'm carrying over my rating of 9 from Roads & Boats as I'm sure this will be more of the same.

After my first game on "Unequal" two-player scenario this felt like an excellent expansion. It was the tightest game so far, I won 399 to 398 points.

But my second game on two-player Holland scenario got quite boring in the end. It was probably due to the scenario only, but perhaps the new mechanics add a bit too much to already quite complicated game. So far: MBAs, electricity, cities, and fundamental research have been a nice addition, polders were not that enjoyable. Others I haven't tried yet.

UPDATE: While I really wanted to like the Art variant, I've come to the conclusion it might be a little overpowered. It seemed a pretty strong way to go with 3, with more than that (and consequentially potentially quite large multipliers) it seems like it would be the only way to go, although obviously it depends (as always) on the map layout.
---
At first, I wasn't that impressed with this expansion: it's expensive, nobody in their right mind is going to play Roads & Boats with 5 or 6 players, and the many variants seemed, on initial inspection, to be a bit hit and miss.

But on playing more, I've really become a convert. The rules for Planes, Polder, Art, and Power Plants are all great and fundamentally change the game in interesting ways - it's almost like having a whole new game. MBAs are a nice touch too. Some of the other stuff - like Railroads, Bombs, and Fundamental Research - doesn't work nearly as well, and at least one (Cities) I thought was actively bad - but the good variants substantially outnumber the bad ones, and they give you new ways to play the game that really breathe life into a game that otherwise could slow down a bit after your 10th or whatever playing.

Love the additions. I've only tried one or two of the 2-player scenarios and one or two of the solo scenarios. Waiting to play a scenario with the art exhibition option.

Was hoping for a little more structure and maps in this expansion. What's there is too briefly explained, too large of a disconnect between the symbols included on the tiles and the descriptions in the rulebook.

In particular, the solo maps are rather lacking. Only one of the included two looks interesting (Charring Cross).

Should add some very interesting play in general, but a few more suggested maps included, not just online, would have been nice.

Oooff. Fairly decent brain burner, runs long, but intensely involving and very interactive, both in terms of implicit board positions and explicit negotiation. Suffers in comparison with games like Nueland in that the balance of focus is turned too far toward solo-optimisation versus competitive exploitation for my preferences.
