Some card fixes, a better box, a better rulebook, some additions.

Get this expansion if you have the base game...necessary!

Got this as a combo at Essen. At my first play I was astonished how elegantly the mechanics worked.

Apart from battles which need house rules in my opinion.

Great addition to the base game!

It really doesn't change anything significantly (other than the Fame/Infamy-specific rewards on some missions), but adds a whole lot more of everything which is always a good thing.

The pile of adjusted/corrected cards takes a little while to sort through initially but it's well worth it and only need to do it the very first time. Once they're all in, there's really no reason to ever take the new cards out.

The much larger (normal-sized) box was a really nice surprise, because now everything actually fits! Getting even just the base game into that original box took some serious effort, and there's no way the extra stuff from this expansion would have made it in there.

more expansions!!! This one adds a couple of captains, a new ship, and various other cards, as well as thematically correct reputation charts. All in all a great expansion!

Expands the game in a good way. Adds more variety and the new rules clarify combat (more strategic too!).

A bit more of everything with improved rules (format and clarification) as well as a box which will hold everything (including the Pilot Academy expansion).

Certainly a good addition to add more cards to the base game, and the rule set much better, and the larger box appreciated.

It is better than the original game. It is still too imbalanced for my taste, but the game is nice and I will definitely play again. Once I get a better understanding, I will also probably change my rating. It is worth a try in any case.

What would you want more from an expansion? This one fixes some mistakes of the base game and brings a bunch of new stuff, including some very interesting optional rules.

Played one sessions, two players.

The game seems interesting in the beginning. Moving, exploring, trading and upgrading your ship are simple to understand.

Unfortunately, as we played, is seems that way too much is happening at random. System placing can create greatly unbalanced areas. Events have a large range - from nothing happens to very bad things happen. The combat system looks, as a first impression, needlessly complicated.

Will probably try with 4 players to see if it's any better.

Actually improves the basic game but it feel like painting a rotten fence.

The combat needs to go faster and the cards need to be more balanced. I'm fine with some randomness but there's too much of it here.

The actual bigger box is nice.
A nice upgrade for the mission cards however could have been included in the base game....

[2012-07-02 Rating: n.a. -> 3.5]
After the explanation of the game, I thought it sounded like Merchant & Marauders in space. You have the pick-up and delivery mechanism, variable player powers, some player vs player combat and randomly assigned missions. All ingredients are there for a nice game. But as the game progressed, I just wanted it to be over. The Phantom League: Mostly Harmless (PL:MH) feels and plays like a rough prototype, not a finished game. Why do I think so? Well, here are some of the main beefs I have with PL:MH:

Battle: If you ever want to experience a game come to a grinding halt, try to attack something in PL:MH. From the rules explanation, I expected something like the card battles in Blood Bowl: Team Manager or FFGs Civilization. What I encountered was an overcomplicated luck fest with wild swings that took ages to resolve. Why not just use dice and modifiers a la Eclipse, I don't think this would be more random. It would certainly help the pace of the game.

Randomness all over: Nearly every action you take in this game let's you draw some cards. Most of them say that you lose a turn: You draw random mission cards that might reward you or not. You fight randomly drawn pirates with more randomly drawn cards. The whole thing felt like a game of Talisman to me. I didn't have the feeling that I had the tools to control my destiny. Sure, there is also luck in Merchants & Marauders, but it's more controllable there.

Lack of Focus: Sometimes, less is more. Take for instance the ship upgrades which are represented by cards. There are a lot of them and each and everyone has a lot to read on them. It takes ages to understand them and find what you want. Why isn't this system more streamlined? The whole thing could be condensed into three or four "tech trees" that would be understandable at a glance. This is true for the whole game: It's just not streamlined enough.

All in all I have to say that this game has some nice ideas. But in my opinion, it needs some more development and streamlining. I won't play it again in it's current implementation.

A fairly essential expansion, in the manner of FFG, fixing issues in the game such as making the different draw decks work better and improving combat, and even the issue of the game box being too small. The kind of expansion that should probably be incorporated into a revised second edition of the game (again, a la FFG).

Even with this, however, I think there are still quite a lot of loose ends in the game, which owners will have to house rule.
