The pacing is off. The end was tense, but the early to mid game felt too relaxed.

Torturously long. Resources are in very short supply, so much of the game is spent biding time and hoping that the next turn will provide what's needed.

The variant I played was called Sore Thumbs. Almost all luck and recognizing what you can do with your hand. Not much opportunity to influence the outcome. Also, it takes much longer than Gin Rummy and Rummy 500, games I like better.

The mechanics are screwed up. If you go to an item, there is a strong chance that you won't be able to pick it up. Don't play anything except a melee character because you start without any equipment. The characters are less balanced than the typical game with variable player powers. Do yourself a favor and play HeroScape instead.

You have to do a lot of reading each turn because the cards have long text. In the end, you have almost zero control over the outcome, so all that reading comes to nothing. Winning the game, for me, is joyless.

It's good, but it's so popular right now in my groups that there is danger of burnout. I'd be happy to play it once or twice a month.

It's better than Arkham Horror in my book. Every Lovecraft-themed game calls its characters "investigators," but this one delivers.

Some good innovations for a deck builder, but the chains take so long that the game overstays its welcome.

As a Mafia game, its mechanics work well and also reinforce the theme. The rules presentation is not the best.

It's the go-to game for a large group at the start or end of a gaming session. The Merlin card and other added roles make this one better than the original.
