I am a playtester for this wonderful game After around 15 plays I can safely say the theme of the game blend with the mechanics well and the game is well worth the time you spend with it. Being a 30-minute filler type it does exactly what it is supposed to - give you a solitaire experience which is different with every new game, mainly due to the random order of the Event cards.
Based on the cards you have to make tactical choices every turn and you need to balance the various resources in the game to be able to get to the desired goal. Yes, the game can end in round 3 if you are not careful enough (yes, happened to me already , or it can last the full 25 rounds... Suit yourself!
A Party game that I will play with a good mix of people quite anytime. One of the few "party" games I can be talked to... Because I "hate" the other ones, where you need to just describe some pictures or come up with words for something and some-such.
A nearly-perfect game! The tension during the building phase and the various events during the flight phase mesh together very well and create a unique game experience! Vlaada punched us right into our noses with this one!
The only small downside would be the need for a fast play, or better said, if someone is slower that the others, he will probably get far behind in his ship creation...
This game surprised me! I found it in a heap of Puzzle boxes that a friend has given my mother-in-law to get rid of. The box says that the game was nominated for the Spiel des Jahres in 1992! And rightfully so.
It is a nice push-your-luck boardgame of robbers collecting Gold Bars in a safe with the option to steal from others also. You basically plan what you want to collect (the Gold Bars come in sets of 1-6 in four colours), moving from shelf to shelf and then rolling for the success of that collection. But this is no Monopoly! You roll according to the distance travelled in your turn and the amount written on the Gold Bars you wish to take, so the more you go and take, the more you have to roll. The push-your-luck mechanism is really nice!
The game has wooden bits and though it shows its age (in components quality, not wear!), the game is nicely playable with 2-4 players and I enjoyed it!
Nice little (as per the Box size, surely not the content!) game, set in 10th century Britain. I like the combination of Tile-uncovering, movement and special Items to be found/searched for. Provides interesting and tense gameplay for up to 5 players.
So far played only the online game against A.I., but I am no newb to the gameplay (being interested in the game for a long time and having seen a few video playthroughs). I like the simple system, allowing for 30-45 minute games on one side and (potentially monstrous) engagements with Overlord/Breakthrough/Overthrough scenarios on the other. So for every type of player his own.
For me the first and most probably the only expansion, at least for the foreseeable future. Between Mediterranean, Pacific and this I think I chose right. Bringing along the Winter/Desert board I have the right combination with the base game to give me tons and tons of scenarios and gameplay to come.
Gimmick? Yes. Unnecessary for any other reason than visual flare? Yes. But despite all that - do I want to play Eastern Front on a real winter map? Double Yeah!!! I now own two, as a result of a lucky recent trade... Enter Overlord scenarios!
Cooperative awesomness! I like the presentation and theme and I also like the cooperative aspect. And as this game can also be played solo, this fills quite every niche of your boardgaming area. If you are inexperienced, you can play with open cards (as we did until now), which is a bit easier.
Interesting social deduction game, which is not overly long (due to limited rounds) and can get pretty involved if people start analyzing things. But this can only happen after a few games under the players' belts, as at first you do not try to strategize during your choices (too much). And the game experience also depends on the group itself - whether the players like to throw (sometimes outrageous) accusations around, or only play it mechanically. In the latter case it would be pretty boring. In the former - way to go! Have yet to try it myself, but will definitely bring it to a future game session.
This wonderful cooperative game is not for anyone or any group. It needs dedicated people, willing to think tactically and work together on the solutions for the ever incoming problems. Also the realtime timer might raise the tension in the game - and discourage some "thinkers".
But if you like furious action, a lot of shouting around and "playing by your guts" rather than thinking about a move for 5 minutes, go for it!
Preliminary rating before playing. Knowing the nature of the game I can safely say it is not a heavy hitter by any means, rather a fun party game for changing groups (although also a single group can have many plays with it without getting too repetitive).
It WILL get repetitive in the end, given the nature of the gameplay (eventually you will be able to correctly align the given cards, as you learn the years of the inventions), but until then it can provide a fast 15-minute relaxed experience with a bit of a history lesson...
Interesting WW2 tactical game with easy to grasp rules, yet providing enough tension to engage even more seriuos grognards. The system is so far free, but the future is always uncertain, as the designer (Barry Doyle) has many interests and does not focus solely on V&V itself. User-made content is quite huge already, so the game can only profit from that.
Very nice! I like how you have to decide if you want to wait that next turn, or take the animals NOW before someone else does. Also you have to manage your Zoo (well, this is not a business simulation, mind you) and try to get the best out of what you are offered.
A very nice family game and if you have kids around, an instant win!
