Gaming heaven. Will write a detailed comparison with Agricola one day. Still exploring its many facets, but already the deepest, most engaging, intense, gamer's game in years. Maybe a little too heavy for the Spiel des Jahres, but all my money says it's the best bet for the Deutsch Spiel Preis. To those who complain about the length, I say : "The longer the better! Savor the length, prolong the pleasure!" (OMG! Did that comes across so porny? Ahh, as Gordon Gekko says, "It's better than sex!")
P/S - It's so good that I made a little "expansion" for 7 players, check out my thread on that.
The best Evolution themed game, ever. IMHO American Megafauna is more educational BUT less playable.
Hard to beat in the "addictive light filler" & "casino substitute" categories.... like your favourite sinful snacks, once you start you can't just stop at one play. In fact I have never rated a mere card game so high (2 de Mayo is NOT a pure card game okay?) Very soon you'll find your Dominion & RFTG expansions gathering dust, so might as well sell em off & buy this! ^_^
The best heavy euro from Splotter since Indonesia! Cost me an arm & a leg, but finally picked this up. Tacked on theme, but innovative mechanics, asymmetrical powers, self-balancing VCs, and very well balanced despite the asymmetry. Excellent brain-burner, and highly interactive play. Oh, btw you need the right kind of gamer, too... no intellectually retarded wimps, pleeze!
Probably my favorite Martin Wallace game! The perfect blend of theme, history, mechanics, and gameplay! 3 possible ways to win, 2 different ways to get points... only points may not always win you the game!
As always, the hallmark of a superlative game is simple rules, and yet great strategic depth arising from the mechanics, map, different strategies, inter- & intra- faction conflicts, the co-opetition between players, and sometimes sudden, dramatic about turns.
None of your damn cube pushing, multi-level upgrading, card-drafting, dice-rolling, monster generating crap. Only the best, streamlined, finely balanced mix of faction, region, type, and timeline concentration of the cards.
The most underrated abstract euro ever, beautifully fluid competition-cooperation game, unique mechanics, one of my favorite games for all types of gamers, very simple rules, very deep gameplay, and so meaty for a 30-minute game. Huge replayability.
Wickedly thematic euro with a lot of interaction & "take that"! If only all the corporate climbing & backstabbing at your office were this fun... not to mention the hidden archenemy factor - so much evil goodness in one box!
Great fun! Feels like Dominant Species lite. Or a non-offensive Tomorrow. Which is actually a compliment - almost no luck, no multiple action selection pawns, and... tahdah!!! it has cute, cuddly, colorful dinosaurs! Very streamlined, easy to "get" the rules, yet a lot of variety & depth despite the fixed board & 6 staple actions. And did I mention cute dinosaurs? Darwinism in motion!
A unique game which cleverly weaves mechanics & theme in an amazingly satisfying way. It fills a very unique niche - both in the historical category & in the genre. Actually it straddles and incorporates several different mechanics in a very homogeneous whole. But just don't try this with your average party gamer/noob crowd. In the planning stage, it gets so quiet you could hear a pin drop! A Thinker's Game. Deep strategy & reading your opponents. It feels almost Martin Wallace-ish.
