My quite possibly uninformed opinion after reading the rulebook is that this strikes me as a rather dry take on Alien Frontiers style dice placement. I think it may be a game design issue that high rolls are almost always better than low rolls. The free compensation for low rolls rule seems like an uninteresting solution to the problem.
I am a big fan of Tzolkin, and I think Marco is very beautifully produced, but I am not excited by my perception of the gameplay. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try it out.
UPDATE: Video reviews have gotten me more excited about the game. I think I'll take the plunge and see.
