I have to rate this game higher than I might objectively would at this stage of my gaming hobby due to the special place it has in my memories of being my first serious and complex board game. I spent many Friday nights into Saturday mornings playing this game with my best friend from high school. I never seemed to be a good dice roller, so I never liked that aspect of battle, but I love mulling over the various strategies and seeing how they play out.
If someone asks to play (which hasn't happened that often), I will probably play. But I just don't want to invest the time to read a book about strategies or watch/read about the great chess games. At this point, I want to move on.
This is one of the classic mainstream games that are usually loved by those not yet introduced to Euro gaming and hated by those who are. I definitely rank it lower than I would have several years ago, but I still give it its due for its popularity in mainstream board gaming.
I really enjoy playing this game, but it has to be with the right crowd. I do not like it when it turns into a "let's make the most inventive answers we can and try to convince you it's acceptable." The timer is also very annoying.
