My favorite game. Simple rules, but highly strategic and tactical, brutal. The game is won and lost in the auction.

Clearclaw describes it best:
"Let's get the basics down: First, this game doesn't like you. It doesn't like anybody else either, but it particularly doesn't like you. If you ever have a question on the rules or how the rules apply to a particular situation then pick the answer that hurts the most. You'll almost certainly be right."

I've only played Ireland so far with 3-players. To spice it up, sub Japan Bullet Train action for Irish Locomotive...

After a few games, I'm happy sticking with a fully defeatured locomotive for 3-players. I've also grown to hate the De-urbanization action - too ornery and nasty. I do want to try Ireland with 4-players though.

1890 Berlin offers some intriguing twists to Age of Steam. The early game is a fight over real estate with Engineer being popular, while the mid-to-late game is more about controlling cube shipments with First Move and Production being popular.

The cities are always replenished to 4 cubes during goods growth (there's no shortage of cubes here) but you can only ship cubes out of a city in order, from right to left. You have to watch how cubes move - do you ship that cube for 4, leaving a 6-link delivery open for an opponent?

Barbados - as a 1-player map, replayability may be low, but cube randomness makes it unique every time. Action selection restrictions make for some interesting strategic planning.

St. Lucia - an excellent 2-player map. A very different game with goods starting on every plains and river hex, no goods growth, and a large number of 'stubs' abandoned after moving the goods from those hexes.

This expansion is great for higher player counts as the map is huge. You're limited to the number of links you can build per turn and are forced to be right on top of the other players early on.

Berlin Wall. Rating: 8
Very deceptive; at first it looks plain and maybe even boring. It didn't quite grab me. But the size of the board, the rules changes and 'the Wall' really make this map a "knife fight in a phone booth". Very tense and INtense, right down to the end. Awesome Age of Steamness!

The Moon. Rating: 7
A brutally tight Age of Steam map, especially when using the original 1-cube per city starting rules. Limited building options, expensive terrain, route-sharing and different actions are powerful especially Urbanization and Low Gravitation. I'm not fond of the wrap-around map as I have a hard time visualizing my routes.

Antiquity has a lot of well-balanced mechanisms: civ planning, engine-building, resource management and area control without the direct conflict or war. Extremely fiddly but deep and strategic.

Almost perfect information (unexplored resources are mostly unknown) with random setup. Get that Cathedral built and use the bonuses but don't be afraid to raze and rebuild either. This is an excellent game.

Some people call this game '18xx meets Wabash Cannonball'. The network building is simple and straight forward, a la Wabash; no cornfield junctions here, just drop a cube in a hex and your company has built there. This is probably the single closest aspect related to Wabash Cannonball.

The majority shareholder is the president and determines how the company expands in the 'Business Rounds', whether train technologies are purchased and whether dividends get paid out to shareholders. The 'level' of trains that have been purchased determines game phases and is a major impact on the game in more ways than one.

There are a lot of differences to 18xx though. Comparable elements are more streamlined (2D stock market, no 60% restrictions, simple track building) but there are definitely many elements unique to Baltimore and Ohio. In B&O, the companies have a different number of cubes available for laying track; companies have different options for where and how far they can expand.

The dance surrounding the train technologies mechanism is brilliant. The current Tech Level (whatever the latest purchased train's level is) and trains have ever-increasing maintenance costs. Why keep that old 2-train when it costs you more in maintenance than the money it's making servicing different cities? The descending cost of newer, same-level trains pushes the players to purchase newer trains, driving the game forward and causing you to question your turn order position.

In order to increase a company's value, it has to be more profitable than the previous round. This is a very interesting dynamic - you don't want to push your runs too fast because you may not be able to keep up in the future. Sometimes it's beneficial to run a less-than-optimal run one round in order to ensure your company will be more profitable in the next round.

Playtime is in the 3-4 hour range but the game is engaging and riveting. Baltimore and Ohio is a work of art!

I want to love Brass, but the cards and the luck-of-the-draw are its downfall.

My initial impressions of Brass were quite negative. But user photocurio made a comment that inspired me to look into this again:
"Brass is fiddly of course, but it offers something rare in Eurogames: an organically developing marketplace driven by supply and demand."

As a result, I tried playing this game online (PBWeb) here: http://brass.orderofthehammer.com/
Dozens of games later, I appreciate Brass' subtleties. I still find it fiddly but Brass has really grown on me.

Two high-quality Chicago Express expansions in one box:

Erie Railroad - adds an additional railroad that only has one share and can be very powerful. This completely changes the game.

Narrow Gauge - a new and innovative way to block your opponents railroads by essentially burning actions. Nasty!

Play them separate or together. Better for higher player counts (I don't prefer them with 3).

Timing timing timing! Colorado Midland is a clever game that packs a punch in a quick playtime. Mine claim cards are randomly distributed to all players at the start of the game and players expand railroads into various mines. How does one properly time when to play certain cards to score high and keep scoring? When is the right time to close a mine claim (remove card) to adjust which claims get shut down this round? How do you balance this with expanding railroads and will other players contribute to your goals or are you helping others out more than yourself?

3+ player game - Rating: 8
To quote Clearclaw: "Minimalist, austere, spartan." Sums it up nicely. It's a quick and simple auction and shareholding game.

2-player only - Rating: 7 due to uncontrollable randomness on the final turn.
Spice up the 2-player game with simultaneous blind-bidding on shares, breaking ties with an additional blind bid; much more interesting.

Innovation is a clever card game where the cards played in front of you represent technological advances that give you advantages in some respects. You can invoke the power of a technology (dogma) and the player with the most of the representative symbol takes advantage of said power benefiting himself or directly impacting other players.

You really need to know all the cards well and which pair well together. I find it difficult to plan a long term strategy and often the more tactical player, not stuck on any one path will be successful. I'm always building a big infrastructure with grandiose plans while others are scoring and pushing the game to end quickly. Also, the higher player count, the more chaotic the game is. Quite good for 2-players though.

This may be the best game to introduce new comers and non-gamers to the system. The rules and concepts are very simple and straightforward. But try to end the game when it benefits you most; that is what it's all about.

In LW, dice represent market demands and work well as a mechanism though it makes the game (really the market) very volatile. The game is in using your player order strategically against other players in reaction to market demand, as well as manipulating when technology becomes obsolete. Namibia features area control and a novel commodity chart with supply/demand/price being factors all manipulated by the players. It also includes an auction for turn order which is easy to get sucked into though not without its risks as you convert money into victory points at specific stages in the game at differing conversion rates.

A note about components: the game board needs to be bigger if not only slightly as the board quickly fills up and it gets quite annoying and difficult to see what is where.

This game is part of a system that eventually spawned the masterpiece that is Age of Steam. In a way, it is simpler and focuses more on positioning yourself in such a way that others make use of your links. More links isn't always better and it's easy to get sucked into a debt spiral. There is a bit of luck in the cards and the dice used for market changes (income reduction). I'm also not very fond of the play continues in clockwise order from player with highest income.

Can you set yourself up to win with the most money yet not take many actions throughout the game?

Preußische Ostbahn / German Railways is a very fun, cube rails game with no share dilution but a very novel turn order mechanism: draw players' cubes from a cup equal to number of players; the lower your income, the more chances you have of getting to take actions that round. Dividends only pay out when 2 railroads meet for the first time (a la Age of Scheme: Routes to Riches).

Players either place cubes on cities claiming VPs, or take a card and if you have a cube on any cities on the card, score multiple VPs. As cube networks grow and join, score more VPs.

Do I take the card now and score a few, or do I place cubes first in the hopes that I'll score more when I take the card? What if another player takes that card? Do I try to block off that opponents network or can my cube be put to better use at this time?

Robber Barons is a clever but somewhat bland, light-to-medium-weight game.

A light and quick economic game. Control the timing of when you "marry" into a family, expansion, and ultimately, when the game will end. The cards add an interesting decision point - do I sell that good now for the much needed capital, or do I save it for the VPs in the end? How do I maximize the VPs on any given card? Is it worth the effort?

The rules are simple and the game is accessible to many different people of all ages. Also quite good for 2 players, though luck of the draw is exacerbated.

While I prefer less luck and more strategy, my concerns are mitigated by the quick playtime. We can easily play a 2-player game in 30 minutes. Plenty of fun here!

SCNF (aka Paris Connection) is a clever game about optimizing your stock portfolio. Interestingly, the cubes (trains) are used as shares as well as markers used to expand the companies. Trading in a share of X for the more lucrative Y gives X-company another cube (train) to build with and potentially increase its income. Conversely, the more shares you take, the fewer that company will have to expand and increase its income. Fun!

For a seemingly simple game, the strategy is subtle, the game is quite clever and with such a quick playtime (10 - 30 minutes), is a favorite around here with casual gamers and heavy gamers alike.

Texas & Pacific is the closest relative to Wabash Cannonball / Chicago Express. It features the 'Go West' mechanism and the Development action has been replaced by Ranch. Instead of using Development to manipulate turn order and benefit a company, Ranch shifts the incentive to the player (cash in pocket). Mechanically, the games are very similar but in reality, T&P plays out quite differently.

I expect T&P to get a lot of playtime around here and the rating to go up.

Thousand Islands is a peculiar game of card drafting available builds and managing Income vs. VPs. The Inspectors are a clever mechanism where you potentially could position them to negatively impact opponents whether by preventing big payouts or positioning yourself to get payouts on your opponents' runs. VP/Income reduction ledges are also interesting. I'd like to try this with more but worried about downtime and long playtime.

It's clear to me that there are many false choices in the game; there appear to be many options when, in fact, there are few. Get your science up and focus on military. It's that simple. It's fun to explore the different paths, but after a few hundred plays, it comes down to 'get your military up and plan for war with the leader.' As a result, luck of the draw is worse than it initially may appear.

It scales well though the 2-player (2 - 2.5 hrs) is very different than 4-player (4+ hrs).

My first attempt at the pseudo-war game genre. Very thematic and plenty fun. Lots of tense nail-biting but need to be in the right mood.

I am impressed at how rich this game is; it feels like a civ game - you're expanding your 'empire', producing and managing resources, dealing with events and trying to stay ahead of your opponent. There is plenty of luck of the draw, but don't hesitate to dump your cards in favor of new ones. Lots of fun!

Wabash Cannonball / Chicago Express is a quick-playing, auction game of railroad expansion and shareholding.

There is no luck and the game is about acting/reacting to what others are doing. Through clever manipulation of available actions and auctioning of shares, you can influence other players into working together to a common end, if only temporarily. While a major feature of the game is the auction, there are also many other things you can do to mess with other players' plans (try taking the B&O or even the PRR southwest to block the C&O - when done properly, it's a thing of beauty!).

The game comes down to influencing when the game will end (if I can end it next turn, I will win, but one turn too early or too late and I don't have a chance). Sometimes the game will end after 4 dividends, sometimes more, and rarely the full 8. Sometimes railroads will make it to Chicago and Detroit; often no one does. If you believe the game always plays out the same and get stale, you don't understand the game and haven't played it enough.

The rules are simple and the depth is subtle at first. Give it a few plays - this is an amazing game!

This expansion makes a great game better. The Erie is very delicate though. Bid with caution!

The player to get the Erie in a 3-player game will regularly clean house. Lately, we're only playing it with 4 or more.

This is a great, no-luck, market supply/demand game. Still digesting but there is a great game here. We played with v2 rules on commodity packages and trading - namely, the ability to buy/sell 1, 2 or 3 cubes in one action during the trading phase. The drawback is the slow trading phase but it's not that bad; it will speed up with experience.

Others have called this and other games in the Riding Series 'brain-burners'. That's an understatement.

The strategy here is subtle, but there is a lot of math and AP; a lot. There has to be a better way to streamline calculations esp. in the end-game. My kind of game though...
