1830 Cardgame makes you feel like you're playing 18XX without a map or tracks. There's a pseudo train rush and a drawn-out endgame spent on tedious calculations.

Really, it is nothing like 18XX and feels somewhat similar to the author's Locomotive Werks. It comes down to managing relative income and when dividends are paid with tax penalties. Frustrating but intriguing.

Streamlined 18XX in many ways (no privates) but with sharper edges (you will run out of many tiles). Should settle to 3 hrs or less. Looking forward to exploring this more.

A completely immersive Civilization experience. The quintessential Civilization board game and a top negotiation game. Play trading rounds with a timer. Unfortunately this is a loooooooong game. Great fun though!

Berlin Wall. Rating: 8
Very deceptive; at first it looks plain and maybe even boring. It didn't quite grab me. But the size of the board, the rules changes and 'the Wall' really make this map a "knife fight in a phone booth". Very tense and INtense, right down to the end. Awesome Age of Steamness!

The Moon. Rating: 7
A brutally tight Age of Steam map, especially when using the original 1-cube per city starting rules. Limited building options, expensive terrain, route-sharing and different actions are powerful especially Urbanization and Low Gravitation. I'm not fond of the wrap-around map as I have a hard time visualizing my routes.

Washington DC. Rating: 7
Similar scale; expensive builds. I don't like the element of randomness that is added with the 'traffic jams'. Overall, not as interesting as the Berlin Wall.

Antiquity has a lot of well-balanced mechanisms: civ planning, engine-building, resource management and area control without the direct conflict or war. Extremely fiddly but deep and strategic.

Almost perfect information (unexplored resources are mostly unknown) with random setup. Get that Cathedral built and use the bonuses but don't be afraid to raze and rebuild either. This is an excellent game.

3+ player game - Rating: 8
To quote Clearclaw: "Minimalist, austere, spartan." Sums it up nicely. It's a quick and simple auction and shareholding game.

2-player only - Rating: 7 due to uncontrollable randomness on the final turn.
Spice up the 2-player game with simultaneous blind-bidding on shares, breaking ties with an additional blind bid; much more interesting.

GM&O is a quick playing, highly tactical game with the winner having the most VPs instead of money in hand. Every option you have seems to setup an opponent with better options. This game is tense and a lot of fun, an excellent 3-player game.

Big, long, fiddly, heavy, engine building, resource management, economic eurogame! Don't waste actions and don't be afraid to take loans for food. Excellent 2-player game; the higher the player count, the longer and more chaotic the game.

Network connection/expansion game. I like how improvements can be shared by others who connect to them - do I waste actions trying to block others from access to "my" cities? The event mechanism is brilliant: each card you play (can have positive or negative effects) will always impact two players.

A relatively simple take on cube rails and stock holding reminiscent of the Historic Railroads system but with a very clever dividend trigger that has some luck of the draw to it, and a 'special-interest' action that can impact value at payout vs. the number of dividend payouts.

In LW, dice represent market demands and work well as a mechanism though it makes the game (really the market) very volatile. The game is in using your player order strategically against other players in reaction to market demand, as well as manipulating when technology becomes obsolete. Get rid of the money and track with pen/paper.

Master of Economy is a fairly heavy economic game. Players start as CEOs of a company and begin ramping up resource production reminiscent of Container. However, goods can not only be sold to the other players but also back to the game (export). The market mechanism is quite charming with the potential for players to purchase resources from others at a lower price and 'export' the same at a higher price. This is not without its risks as the higher priced exports may lose their demand and not sell. Finally, players and even companies buy and sell shares of the companies and vote for new CEOs. Companies can pay dividends and CEOs can even embezzle funds out of their companies and into their own pockets.

This is an interesting but strange game as some features seem counter-intuitive, ie. the only way to raise capital is through selling of resources. Buying and selling shares can never increase company coffers or affect share value.

Can you set yourself up to win with the most money yet not take many actions throughout the game?

Preu├čische Ostbahn / German Railways is a very fun, cube rails game with no share dilution but a very novel turn order mechanism: draw players' cubes from a cup equal to number of players; the lower your income, the more chances you have of getting to take actions that round. Dividends only pay out when 2 railroads meet for the first time (a la Age of Scheme: Routes to Riches).

The Princes of Florence is one of the big, classic euros, though it requires strategy or long term planning. The Auction sequence is integral where reading your opponents state and strategy is crucial while you bluff your way putting items up for auction and upping the bids. When and for how much do you convert cash to VPs?

Reminds me of SNCF where you draw cubes that double as tracks that connect cities, however, once connected, goods cubes can be delivered to and from cities with payouts to stock holders and a bonus to player moving the goods. Opaque. Pleasantly surprised by this one.

SCNF (aka Paris Connection) is a clever game about optimizing your stock portfolio. Interestingly, the cubes (trains) are used as shares as well as markers used to expand the companies. Trading in a share of X for the more lucrative Y gives X-company another cube (train) to build with and potentially increase its income. Conversely, the more shares you take, the fewer that company will have to expand and increase its income. Fun!

For a seemingly simple game, the strategy is subtle, the game is quite clever and with such a quick playtime (10 - 30 minutes), is a favorite around here with casual gamers and heavy gamers alike.

I am impressed at how rich this game is; it feels like a civ game - you're expanding your 'empire', producing and managing resources, dealing with events and trying to stay ahead of your opponent. There is plenty of luck of the draw, but don't hesitate to dump your cards in favor of new ones. Lots of fun!
