Ideal playable short game for 2 or 3 people with compelling gameplay and varied strategy. One of the best ever designed.

My Intro into Block Games. Excellent choice. I'm so very impressed with the simple to learn game mechanics. Can't believe how much fun this game is.

Everything is intuitive in this update to the venerable original. The rules are well written and the game is playable out of the box within an hour of the stickers being applied. The new edition of this game is a real improvement of the block fog of war, step/strength reduction system. The mainly operational game board is supplemented by a tactical battlefield that organizes forces into left, center, right and reserve formations and which also get supplemented with randomly drawn blocks from a terrain pool. After two defending terrain and one attacking terrain blocks are placed on their respective sides, the defender places all of his units first and then the attacker places and goes first. If any one enemy position gets overrun then the entire enemy army routes to get dispersed along the road restrictions of the operational map. Gone from this battle board is the 3 battle round maximum rule enforced in so many other block games of this type. Also, a one round skirmish is fought instead on the operational map whenever a battle is too small to provide at least one block in each of the 3 directly opposing battle board positions(in such cases the defender has first shot honors and force retreats following the allied response). I enjoy the way the distribution of forces in this game makes it tough to progress with the French. This keeps it very interesting to try and succeed with the more challenging side. One of the war games that is equally satisfying when lost. A double blind option ramps up the fog of war tension further. A supply city rule provides an auto French victory opportunity which really decreases the possibility of an army avoiding the aggressor in order to 'run the clock out' on a potential victory, therefore the time limit aspect of this game doesn't get abused like it does in some other games modeling this era. Now, I know some players that really hold to the opinion that the French need at least one more block of force to have enough ummphhh to do well against an experienced Allied player. That is probably true from the standpoint of perfect balance, but this game is also an elegant representation of expected historical outcomes afterall. The reason I like this game so much is it plays in only 90 mins. and provides both players with an experience that bridges operational level maneuvering with two different smaller scaled tactical battlefield models. It hits a scale variety sweet spot that doesn't overstay its welcome. It remains an under-appreciated, brilliantly designed game that produces an enjoyable dichotomy of balancing both operational and tactical concerns.
