Updated version of the Descent Merged/Reorganized rulebooks

This is the most up-to-date version.

The only change to this version is the embedded fonts, to make it look like it should on everyone's computer.

This is a reorganized rulebook for Descent: Journeys in the Dark.
It includes the base game rules (Descent Journeys in the dark) as well as both expansions rules: The Well of Darkness and The Altar of Despair.
The rules have been reorganised so that topics aren?t split across many sections anymore.

The content of the official FFG Descent?s Errata and FAQ have also been integrated into this document.

Please consider a Geek Gold donation or at least a thumbs-up if you like it.

Version 1.3
-Edited the ?Good Altar? rule to reflect latest official rule.
-Added the ?Trickster? special ability (it was missing)
-Edited the table of content
Version 1.2
-Fixed a typo in the corrupted terrain rule.
-Edited the Furr the Spirit Wolf rule to reflect the latest official FAQ rule.
Version 1.1
-Updated the Battle action rule, to reflect the rule from the rule from the latest official Descent rulebook edition.
-Edited the document to prevent some tables and Notes/Examples boxes (yellow boxes) from breaking up between columns
-Added the Stun and Web token image.
-Edited the table of content
Version 1.0
-Initial release

Having said that, it looks like this document isn't based on the most up-to-date version of the rules.

In the rules on Hero orders, the version of the JitD rulebook I bought a few months ago says: "A hero that battles may make up to two attacks during his turn, but receives no movement points from the action". But older versions of the rulebook, including the old PDF on the Fantasy Flight website, say: "A hero that battles may make up to two attacks during his turn, but cannot move".

The difference is important, as several queries elsewhere on the Geek have highlighted. I think it would be worth updating this document to take that into account.

Thanks for the heads up. I've made the change. I also did a few editing tweaks as well as some table of content adjustments, new version (1.1) posted.

Cheers!

What a great Job! Thank you for all of your effort!

I wanted to let you know that you had accidentally left out one special ability: "Trickster" from WoD.

Nice work. Just printed this off and it looks like it'll be really handy. Even just having a 'Contents' section makes it far more useful than the official rules.

One suggestion from a brief glance though. In the original rules, markers like pits and glyphs were categorised, coming under headings such as Props and Obstacles. Since these terms are often used in card descriptions (especially crushing block's "not adjacent to any obstacle"), it might be a good idea to list them under the same categories rather than all under 'Map Tiles and Markers'.

Great resource. Would love to see it updated for the new version of the FAQ (1.2 updated on 2/2/08). Also would be useful to include breath attack blocking examples page from the FAQ.

Thanks.

Yes it will be update sometime this week with the FAQ v1.2

I will see if a Road to legend version could be done as well, but will keep it as a separate release.

A RTL version would be fantastic, given the large number of changes the new expansion makes to the rules. But I agree it's best to keep this separate from the non-RTL version. It looks like Descent-with-RTL will really be a different game.

Well, it's work in progress right now. I can't give a release date though, it's a lengthy process and spare time is an issue these days

But I'll do as quick as I can, thank you for your interest!

This is great. Out of curiosity, what did you use to create the original document? And would you be willing to post or share that? I'd love to help make changes as FAQs became available, and also wouldn't mind spicing it up with some additional images.

This is great!

As I read through it, I marked down a few minor corrections, in the spirit of contribution:

Quote:
p.5 "draws a random chest Makers" should be "draws a random chest marker"

p.9 The Movement chart has a 5th annotation, but none of the tasks are marked with a 5.

p.10 Under "Boxed Text," "The overlord read aloud" should be "The overlord reads aloud"

p.10 The Items chart has a 4th annotation, but none of the items are marked with a 4. The Training Token should be marked 4.

p.11 "The Heros Pack" heading should have an apostrophe in "Hero's."

p.12 Under Step 4, the last few words are "no damage is." and should be "no damage is done."

Thanks for this excellent resource!

Great stuff!

It would be even better if you embed the fonts you're using in the pdf file.
As I don't have all these fonts on my computer, shake
it far less beautiful (and readable) than I think you've made it.

Thanks!

You are absolutely right, just noticed how it looks on a computer that is missing the right fonts.... UGLY!

I'll issue an update shortly with embeded fonts, thanks for the heads up!

Many thanks for your hard work! I printed your document in booklet format and it is simply great, no need for the official rulebooks any longer.
This is now my main Descent reference. goo

Am I correct that the July update only contains embedded fonts?

Correct, that's all I had time to do between 2 days of sun and a fishing trip

Rain is back end of this week so I'll probably put some time on an update (include FAQ 1.3 rules + more updates from comments a I received here).

I wanted to make a Road to legend version as well, that will be next.

Cheers!

hello.
well i have a couple of thoughts that come to my mind reading version 1.3

------------------------------------------------------------------------

- on page 9 in 'movement table' it says '4 heroes n' named monsters only (see rune-locked doors on page 22 for details'

> well as far as i can see it should be 'page 21'

------------------------------------------------------------------------

- on page 18 in descripions about familiars n' companions just for example: in boggs the rat 'by a wizardry skill card', in bottle imp 'silver treasure card', in mata n' kata 'by a wizardry skill card' BUT in furr the spirit wolf 'by the (...) skill card'

> i dont have box in my reach but it would be a nice add to correct WHAT skill card it is.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

n' now for 2 things > 1 is sugestion n' 2nd is 'please help' so:

------------------------------------------------------------------------

when i attack n' do lets say 6 damage to target with 3 armor then it would be what ? 3 damage right ? i think yes. so inflicting is a result of: 6-3=3 ? if this is right then please tell me 2 things:

1. how it is possible to deal FULL DAMAGE when asfaik when we '-' there is no 0.5, 0.75 etc so where is a trick about i.e. blast

2. please include short info in this manual of Yours about - what a full damage really is n' how it works with example'

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

so there it is. i love this game n' this manual is REALLY great organized n' helpful, so please respond.

ps. can i gain from anybody a good n' easy example of exploiting a 'before applying the effect of armor' / 'target ignore armor' because i know a group of young players who have a dozens of Q without answers.

I love this resource. It's replaced the official rulebooks in my set.
However, I have one issue. Page 17, under "Treachery for the original quests" it refers to Appendix B, but there's not appendices in document. There's also not an "Appendix A" that I can find. The treachery values for the original quests are really useful.

Also, I know you're working on a RtL version, even though that's almost a completely new game. But any plans for a Tomb of Ice update? I think that should be easier than a RtL update.

Hang in there guys, I'm collecting comments from different sources and will make an update eventually.

Thanks for the interest and feedback, what started as a personal project for myself only has become a +4000 downloads thing.

I'm tired of waiting the almost 9 months since ToI came out (and longer since RtL), so I've started updating this document myself. The ToI rules are much easier to incorporate than the RtL rules IMHO. I was able to convert the pdf to a Word doc, using http://www.pdftoword.com/, but the layout of some of the graphics has made editing...difficult. Still, I'm progressing slowly (other responsibilities are getting in the way too) and once I have a file I'm happy with I'll upload it.

(I suspect if I'd had a non-pdf of the document, say either in MS Word or an rtf file, I'd be done by now.)

To me, the RtL rules are an entirely different game and not as easy to incorporate as the other expansions. After I'm done with ToI I'll work on a way to add the RtL rules.

I've tried several PDF-to-Word converters. The problem is the complexity of the document. Lots of graphics, different fonts & sizes, tables, etc.

Besides, that software just does Word(or other document)-to-PDF, not the other way around. That is really easy to do. And won't help when wanting to do a lot of editing to a PDF document. (No, Adobe Acrobat Pro won't help either. That doesn't let me edit the document enough.)

Hello everyone,

I know it's been a long time, sadly this time, I wont promise a new version. Due to a number of reason, the main one being a complete lost of interest for Descent, I wont continue working on this document.
Sorry to have kept you waiting so long, but I thought I would at least let you guys know.

If anyone is interested in working on future versions of the merged rulebook, please get in touch with a BGG member called "Jumo".

FYI, I used Word to edit and write the document, then used Nitro PDF Professional 5 printer driver to save it as a PDF document. This combination gave the best result. Nitro is available onlilne, google for it.

I will be providing the source file to Jumo as soon as I'm able to change my desktop power supply, which gave up a couple weeks ago. He sent me a PM asking if I would allow the BGG community to take over the project. Of course I don't have an issue with this.

Cheers guys.

Fred

Just a quick status on where I'm at in recreating & updating this wonderful document.
I finished all the major (re)formatting & additions of the ToI rules yesterday. Now I need to confirm the FAQ updates are in and accurate and proof things like page number references, appendices, etc. Hopefully I'll get that done this week, but I should definitely have something for the community by the end of August.
It will be uploaded as a new file and I'll put a link in this thread once it's in place.

Thanks to i.a.m for creating the document in the first place though! While adding in the ToI rules has taken much more time than I'd hoped or expected, I can't imagine building this from scratch. That was a massive undertaking on his part and I very much appreciate it.

(RtL rules will be coming next. Doing ToI helped me learn the process of updating & reformatting everything. Since RtL will contain so many rules that aren't relevant/needed for non-RtL games, those changes are actually more difficult than just adding ToI.)

My v1.4 of the Merged Rulebook is now available athttp://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/46083/. This update (really, a rebuild after converting from pdf) contains the Tomb of Ice rules and March, 2009 FAQ. I have started working on v1.5 which will incorporate the Road to Legend rules and better formatting cleanup.

I unintentionally deleted the v1.4 document from BGG but have uploaded v1.5. It should show up soon. At this point I consider the document "complete", at least until another FAQ or base expansion comes out. I've already found one mistake of course, but it's in the introduction and won't be fixed until the next release. If there are any rules errors or other corrections that I haven't found please send me a message and I will make those changes to my source.

My focus is now moving to the RtL_Merged_Rulebook.

Card numbers uses CELTIC HAND
